Instructions to Authors

Author Guidelines

The method of submitting manuscripts to Ciencias Marinas is through a five-step process for uploading your metadata and text, figure and table files to Ciencias Marinas web-site. It is our hope that electronic submitting of manuscripts will decrease the time from submission to editorial decision and publishing.

Ciencias Marinas publishes all aspects of basic and applied research on marine sciences. Papers are accepted in Spanish and/or English on the basis of their original and meritorious data and ideas. Preliminary notes and progress papers are unacceptable. Manuscripts may be submitted in the form of research articles or research notes. Manuscripts describing new techniques are welcome, and they should include data that illustrate the usefulness of the technique. Reviews and minireviews are generally solicited, but interested authors are encouraged to contact the Editor. Comments may be submitted that describe methods or equipment, that discuss papers previously published in Ciencias Marinas, or that discuss other topics of interest to our readers; comments will be reviewed and sent to the authors of the commented article for reply. Manuscripts submitted must not have been published, accepted for publication, or be under consideration elsewhere.

Manuscripts deemed outside the scope of Ciencias Marinas, or not following the Instructions to Authors, will not be accepted for revision. One of the Associated Editors of Ciencias Marinas will critically evaluate the scientific merits of the manuscript, choose appropriate referees and evaluate the reviewer's comments. The Editor-in-Chief will decide on acceptance or rejection for publishing based on the report and recommendations of the Associated Editor. The date of submission and acceptance will be printed on each article. The corresponding author will receive page proofs and will be responsible for the final version of the published article.

Manuscripts should be submitted as ONE pdf file per language (Spanish, English) including title page, text pages (organized as described below), tables (one per page) and figures (one per page). All manuscripts must be typed in a 12-point font and must be DOUBLE-SPACED THROUGHOUT and have their rows numbered, including the abstract, literature list, tables, table headings, etc. Times New Roman font is preferred. The Abstract and Results should be written in past tense. Type all headings flush left. Italicize subheadings.

The following sequence should be used.
1. Title page: should show the title, name(s) of author(s), affiliation(s) and full postal address(es), the running title, and the name, address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail of the corresponding author. The running title should not exceed 60 characters and should be as close as possible to the full title.
2. Page one: should include the title of the contribution, abstract and a maximum of five key words. The abstract should be concise, informative and should not exceed 300 words. Once the manuscript is accepted for publishing, authors must provide the abstract (resumen) and key words (palabras clave) in both English and Spanish even if they request to have the paper translated. The Abstract should be a short description of the purpose of the investigation and of pertinent background literature. It should take into consideration those who are not experts in the particular area.

3. Text pages: should be divided into sections (e.g., introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion) and, if necessary, subsections. The complete scientific name (genus, species and authority) of an organism should be given when first mentioned. Use italics rather than underlining (except with URL addresses). Footnotes should not be used in the body text. Information presented in tabular form in the text itself should be of single column width; anything wider than this should be presented in the form of a table. All figures and tables must be cited in numerical order in the text.

4. Materials and Methods: Describe the methodology used in the study in sufficient detail to permit the study to be replicated by another scientist. Whenever possible, give sources of materials in detail. For equipment, materials and supplies indicate the source (manufacturer name, city, state, country]). Use metric units (International Unit System, SI) and SI style, e.g. mg L-1, mol photons m-2 s-1.

5. Results: Results and Discussions should be separated. Only results of the study should be included here. Rationale for undertaking certain aspects of the investigation, methods, techniques, etc., must be excluded. Figures and tables should be mentioned in the text in order of presentation (e.g. fig. 1 before fig. 2, table 3 before table 4). When tables or figures are presented, cite only the significant results in the text. Do not duplicate the presentation of data in both a figure and a table. Photographs should only be included if necessary to illustrate results. Include statistical analyses or other indicators to enable assessment of the variance of replicates of the experiments.

6. Discussion: The significant results and their importance to the study and to the discipline in general should be discussed. Reference to illustrative material should be minimal and should be provided only when necessary to emphasize a specific interpretation. Conclusions should be included and explicit in the discussion and not presented in a separate section.

7. Acknowledgments: This is to be used as necessary to acknowledge an institutional paper number, and financial and other assistance.

8. References: References in the text are cited by author and publication date. Arrange multiple references by the same author(s) chronologically; care should be taken that all those quoted in the paper are included. References to unpublished material should not be entered in the list. Personal communications, manuscripts submitted but not yet accepted and unpublished data may be acknowledged, in parentheses, in the text. The accuracy of the references is the responsibility of the author. In the case of authors who use two surnames, both should be cited and, to avoid confusion, they should be hyphenated when referred to in the text. References in the reference list must be arranged alphabetically. The style to be used is as follows:

Gendrop-Funes V, Valenzuela-Espinoza E. 1995. Unilateral ablation of Penaeus stylirostris (Stimpson). Cienc. Mar. 21: 401?413.

MacGinitie GE, MacGinitie N. 1968. Natural History of Marine Animals. McGraw-Hill, New York, 523 pp.

Rice ME. 1980. Sipuncula and Echiura. In: Morris RH, Abbott DP, Haderlie EC (eds.), Intertidal Invertebrates of California. Stanford Univ. Press, Stanford, California, pp. 490?498.

9. Tables: should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals; they should be set out separately and given a concise title. Vertical rules should be avoided. One Table per page.

10. Figure legends: Should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals. Figure legends should be explicit but concise.

11. Figures. Place at the end of the text, one figure per page. Only good quality figures will be accepted for publication. All figures should be black, white and shades of gray. Color figures will only be published when they are strictly required and a 300 dlls/figure fee will be charged to the authors. After aceptance of the manuscript, individual figures files must be provided by the authors with a resolution greater of 300 dpi.

Figures will be reduced (up to 60%) to 15 x 15 cm maximum size. Thus, care should be taken to ensure that the size of the letters and thickness of the lines will still be legible after final reduction; once reduced, lettering should not be less than 8 points. The same kind of lettering (Arial or Arial narrow) should be used in all figures and the use of boldface should be avoided. All figure files should indicate the figure number.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file (text, tables, figs, etc.) is in ONE Portable Document Format (PDF) file (smaller than 900 kb).
  3. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed at the end of the text in separate pages (one per page).
  4. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  5. Publication rate is 10 dlls per page and translation rate (if requested by the authors, English-Spanish or Spanis-English) are 10 dlls per page.
