About the journal
The journal publishes original papers and short communications by internationally recognized scientists, covering all areas of plant breeding, including plant genetics, plant physiology, plant pathology, and plant growth and development. The journal focuses on crop plants and is therefore of interest to seed companies and the plant breeding industry as well as to researchers and educators. Most articles appear in English (over 95%).
Instructions to Authors
Please send your manuscript to one the Editors-in-Chief
Professor Dr. W. E. Weber Martin-Luther-Universität Halle Institut f¨¹r Pflanzenz¨¹chtung und Pflanzenschutz Ludwig-Wucherer-Str. 2 06099 Halle, Germany Tel. +49 (0)345 55 22680 Fax +49 (0)345 55 27222 e-mail: weber@landw.uni-halle.de
Professor Dr. C. Jung Universität Kiel Institut f¨¹r Pflanzenbau und Pflanzenz¨¹chtung Olshausenstr. 40 24098 Kiel, Germany e-mail: cjung@plantbreeding.uni-kiel.de
or to one of the editorial board members (for addresses see inside of front cover).
Please submit your manuscript on diskette, zip, or CD-ROM with two hardcopies and retain a copy for yourself. Manuscripts must conform to the journal style and should be submitted in the final version. The Manuscript Submission Form must accompany the manuscript. It includes the copyright transfer agreement, the complete correspondence address, and the guidelines for colour print charges and is available for downloading in PDF format at the Plant Breeding Home Page (www.blackwell.de/journale/pbr/pbrmssub.htm). After having received your manuscript ("date of submission") there will be a review process before the editor-in-chief makes the definitive decision upon the acceptance for publication ("date of acceptance"). The editor-in-chief can require changes, but all changes have to be approved by the author(s). One copy of the revision together with a new diskette, zip, or CD-ROM and the original manuscript must be returned to the editor-in-chief.
Your manuscript will be destroyed three months after publication. Only appropriately marked originals will be returned. The publisher cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss through the post.
3. Requirements for manuscripts
3.1 Format Every original paper should be divided into the following six sections: abstract, introduction (statement of objectives), materials and methods, results, discussion, and references. Results and discussion must be separated except for short communications. The manuscripts should be typed on one side of the paper only, double spaced, and with 4 cm margins.
At the head of the manuscript, the following information should be given: the title of the paper, the name(s) of the author(s), the institute where the research was carried out, the present addresses of the authors and of the corresponding author (if different from above institute). Please also supply an e-mail address of the corresponding author. The abstract should contain at least one sentence on each of the following: objective of investigation (hypothesis, purpose, aim), experimental material, method of investigation, data collection, result and conclusions. It should not exceed a total length of 175 words. Up to 10 key words should be added at the end of the abstract. Please find the correct format in earlier issues of Plant Breeding.
3.2 Length Manuscripts should not exceed a final length of 15 printed pages, i.e. 20 000 words, including spaces required for figures, tables, and list of references (short communications 3 printed pages, with no more than a total of 2 figures or tables); preference will be given to shorter contributions.
3.3 Units, abbreviations and nomenclature For physical units, unit names, and symbols, the SI-system should be employed. Biological names should be given according to the latest international nomenclature. Botanical and zoological names, gene designations, and gene symbols are italicised. The name of 'cultivars' appear in single quotation marks.
3.4 Tables and figures Documentation of the same results in tables and diagrams is inadmissible. It is essential that text and image files be kept separate. Please mark the position of tables/figures in the text margin. Each table must have a reference in the text (and vice versa). Any corrections requested by the reviewer should already be integrated into the file. Distinct originals or artwork prints (no photocopies) are required for copying. Submit distinct, well-focused, full-contrast glossy prints for halftone images.
Save images (always with a printout) in a neutral data format such as TIFF or EPS. MS PowerPoint and Word Graphics are unsuitable. Do not use pixel-oriented programmes. Scans (TIFF only) should have a resolution of 400 dpi (halftone) or 600 to 1200 dpi (line drawings) in relation to the reproduction size. Please submit the data for figures in black and white. However, colour photos can be reproduced in black and white (with a possible loss of contrast). Figures printed in colour are subject to an additional charge. A single page in colour costs € 567,- plus reproduction costs and VAT. Colour print charges are explained on the Manuscript Submission Form (see 2 above). Colour graphics should be created using the CMYK colour palette (print colours), not RGB (monitor colours). There is a charge for alterations to figures when carried out by the publisher.
Motif and scale (e.g. of microscopic photographs) should be appropriate to the reproduction size. Please indicate the desired detail on a copy of the illustration or greaseproof paper. Printouts should be made with a laser printer at the highest resolution (> 600 dpi). Line drawings should only be contour drawings without halftones (photo, shades of grey). Please do not use patterns; rough hatching is possible.
Graphs with an x- and y-axis should not be enclosed in frames; only 2-dimensional representations are possible. Do not forget the labels and units. Captions for the figures should give a precise description of the content and should not be repeated within the figure.
Tables should be created using the table function in MS Word or the tabulator in other programmes.
3.5 References The list of references should only include publications cited in the text. They should be cited in alphabetical order under the first author's name, listing all authors, the year of publication and the complete title, according to the following examples:
Wricke, G., and W. E. Weber, 1986: Quantitative Genetics and Selection in Plant Breeding. W. de Gruyter, Berlin.
In the text, the bibliographical reference is made by giving the name of the author(s) with the year of publication.
4. Copyright
Publication in the journal is subject to the condition, that the manuscript has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. Upon submission of the manuscript to the publisher, the author certifies that neither his contribution nor any foreign text or figures therein procured by him infringe upon the rights of a third party, and that the author alone is authorized to dispose of the existing right of utilization with regard to copyright. The author will refrain from any other duplication and distribution or digital transfer and reproduction (e.g. on the Internet) during the period of the contract. For the duration of the lawful copyright, the author grants the publisher, regardless of location, the exclusive right of duplication and dissemination (right of publication) without restriction as to the intangible reproduction of the article, the right to make the article available to any individual online as well as the right to issue licences to third parties nationally and abroad for the exercise of the granted ancillary rights. The publisher is authorized to make use of the utilization rights to which he is entitled, however, he is not obligated to do so.
5. Proof correction and offprints
Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file to the corresponding author, which should be reviewed, countersigned and returned without delay. The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site:
www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Author's corrections are limited to typesetting errors. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs. If the proofs are not returned to the publisher after an established grace period, the publisher will assume that the article can be published unchanged. Twenty-five offprints will be sent free of charge to the first-named author. Additional offprints can be ordered on the form attached to the proofs. Offprints and author's copies will be sent to the corresponding author unless otherwise noted on the order form. Later special requests entail extra charges.
6. Book reviews
In each volume the issues one and four contain book announcements.
