About the journal
|
The "Journal of Plant Physiology" publishes original papers, reviews and rapid communications dealing with all aspects of plant biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology and basic aspects of plant biotechnology. All papers are published in English. The main focus of the journal is to disseminate original and high quality information governing basic plant processes and development. The journal also invites the submission of papers which bridge basic research in functional plant sciences with applied aspects of plant biotechnology. Papers will be accepted only after peer review. They will be expected to adhere to high scientific quality standards. As a new feature, and in order to promote rapid publication of urgent and outstanding papers, a credit point system will be used to define the priority of publication of the accepted manuscripts. We have streamlined the review process as well as the time for printing. |
Instructions to Authors
The "Journal of Plant Physiology" publishes, in English, original papers, short communications and reviews in most areas of plant physiology, plant biochemistry, plant molecular biology and functional biotechnology of plants. Manuscripts from applied fields and certain comparative studies can be accepted only if they contribute to the understanding of physiological mechanisms.
Submission of a manuscript implies that the submitted work has not been published before (except as part of a thesis or lecture note or report, or in the form of an abstract); that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors as well as by the authorities at the institute where the work has been carried out; that written permission of copyright holders was obtained by the authors for material used from other copyrighted sources; that, if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication, the authors hand over the transferable copyrights of the accepted manuscript to the publisher and that the manuscript, or parts thereof, will thus not be published elsewhere in any language without the consent of the copyright holder. Copyrights include, without spatial or timely limitation, the mechanical, electronic and visual reproduction and distribution; electronic storage and retrieval; and all other forms of electronic publication or any other types of publication including all subsidiary rights.
Invited reviews (IR) Authors interested in writing a review article should contact the Editor in Chief in advance by submitting a summary of the intended manuscript. The Editor may then send an official letter of invitation with further instructions. Original Papers (OP) should not exceed 25 double-spaced pages with 2 cm margins including tables and figures (approximately 35.000 characters). Short Communications (SC) have a maximum length of 6 double-spaced pages with 2 cm margins including tables and figures (approximately 4.500 characters).
All manuscripts (hard copies) should be submitted in triplicate and ready for printing to one of the managing editors. The additional submission of an electronic copy may occasionally shorten the time required for the evaluation of the manuscript. The electronic copy must be submitted by e-mail attached to a single letter and will only be used if not larger than 1.4 MB (including figures etc.). For on-screen reviewing, a resolution of 75 pixels/inch is sufficient, but note that a minimal resolution of 300 pixels/inch will be needed for submission of the accepted version. The electronic manuscript must be in Word or PDF. Figures can be integrated or in separate TIF or JPG files. The letter should contain the name of the corresponding author, manuscript title and software programs and versions used and state that the electronic version of the manuscript matches the hard copy. The subject line must read: JPP-family name of corresponding author (JPP-Miller). The date of receipt, together with the manuscript number, will be issued after the hard copies have been received by the editorial office. All further correspondence should refer to the manuscript number.
Arrangement of manuscript:
Cover Page: Running title; Postal address, phone and FAX numbers and e-mail address of corresponding author
Title Page: Title of the article (should be short and informative and devoid of abbreviations); Name(s), including full first name, institution(s) and address(es) of author(s) Page 1: Summary; Key words (in alphabetical order); Abbreviations (in alphabetical order)
Following pages: Introduction; Materials and Methods; Results; Discussion; Acknowledgments; References; and on separate sheets, Tables; Legends of figures; Figures
Text: Style should be concise and clear. Correct English spelling, syntax and grammar is the sole responsibility of the author(s). A manuscript may be rejected due to lack of clarity or poor English. Genera must be spelled out when first mentioned and experimental plants defined by taxonomic names and authority in Material and Methods. Methods should be described tersely, but precisely enough to permit replication. Genus and species names and words to be emphasized should be printed in italics. Footnotes are not permitted.
Units: SI units should be used throughout and decimals instead of fractions; see J Plant Physiol 139 (1991) p 128. Enzymes should be given with the EC-number when first mentioned.
Citations in the text: Name(s) of author(s) followed by the year of publication: (Takami and Takio 1987); Takami and Takio (1987). Where there are more than two authors, only the first should be named followed by et al. (Takami et al. 1992).
References should be listed alphabetically as shown below (please note punctuation and capitalization).
In "Original Papers" the long form should be used: Takami S, Takio S (1987) Establishment of cell suspension cultures of Hedwigia ciliata. J Plant Physiol 130: 267-272 Krause GH, Weis E (1988) The photosynthetic apparatus and chlorophyll fluorescence. In: Lichtenthaler HK (ed) Applications of Chlorophyll Fluorescence. Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht pp 3-11 Simons P (1992) The Action Plant. Blackwell, Oxford
In "Short Communications" the short form should be used: Takami SA, Takio S (1987) J Plant Physiol 130: 267-272 Krause GH, Weis E (1988) In: Lichtenthaler KH (ed) Applications of Chlorophyll Fluorescence. Kluwer, Dordrecht pp 3-11 Simons P (1992) The Action Plant. Blackwell, Oxford
Tables: The number of tables should be restricted to that necessary for the documentation of numerical results. The placement of the tables should be indicated in the left margin. Figures must be ready for reproduction (original photographs) and not exceed 20 x 26 cm. Lettering should be of suitable size with capitals at least 1.8 mm in height after reduction for printing. In single column figures, maximum letter height should not exceed 3 mm, in full page figures 5 mm (after reduction). The placement of the figures should be indicated in the left margin.
Submission of colour figures for review signifies that publication in colour is requested. Authors must cover part of the printing costs of colour figures according to the following list (prices in Euro): 1 Colour plate per publication 450 EUR 2 Colour plates per publication 750 EUR 3 Colour plates per publication 1.000 EUR 4 Colour plates per publication 1.150 EUR 5 Colour plates per publication 1.300 EUR
For invited reviews, the Editor in Chief can reduce the charge for colour plates.
Proofs: Upon acceptance, the manuscripts will be forwarded promptly to the printer. Galley proofs will be sent to the corresponding author for final corrections. Alterations other than the correction of printing errors will be charged to the corresponding author. Authors will receive 25 reprints free of charge. Members of the Federation of European Societies of Plant Physiology (FESPP) may request 25 supplemental free reprints. Additional reprints can be ordered for a fee when proofs are returned.
