Instructions to Authors
Submission of manuscripts
The following submissions will be considered: Articles reporting original research (normal length 8 journal pages): see below for preparation of manuscripts. Authors should submit their manuscripts to European Biophysics Journal online to facilitate even quicker and more efficient processing. Electronic submission substantially reduces the editorial processing and reviewing times and shortens overall publication times. Please use the link below to log directly onto the site and upload your manuscript following the on-screen intructions.
Editorial office
A. Watts European Biophysics Journal Editorial Office Oxford Biomembrane Structure Unit Biochemistry Department University of Oxford South Parks Road Oxford OX1 3QU, UK Tel.: +44-1865-275268 Fax: +44-1865-275234/275259 e-mail: awatts@bioch.ox.ac.uk http://www.bioch.ox.ac.uk/~awatts/ European Biophysics Journal has one central editorial office which deals with all manuscripts. After submission, manuscripts are allocated to one of the Editors. Manuscripts will normally be refereed by two independent reviewers reporting to the responsible editor. Authors are free to name up to three persons whom the editor may invite to evaluate the manuscript.
Legal requirements
Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before (except in the form of an abstract, or as part of a published lecture, or thesis); that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities - tacitly or explicitly - at the institute where the work has been carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.
Manuscript preparation
All manuscripts should be typewritten (12 pt) with double spacing and wide margins and lines should be numbered consecutively throughout the text. Please note that one printed page corresponds to approximately: 850 words text, or 3 illustrations with their legends, or 55 references.

Reviews These will normally be invited and will be refereed. Unsolicited reviews will be considered for publication, but intending authors are recommended to consult the Managing Editor initially. |

Biophysics letters These are shorter articles for accelerated publication, representing significant results and technical advances or discussion of a current proposition within the Journal’s field of interest. To facilitate review, the work should be effectively acceptable in the form submitted, meeting the normal criteria of scientific rigour. Normal Journal format should be used for references, tables etc. Submission of any manuscript implies that it has the approval of all the named authors, that it represents unpublished work, and that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. | Authors will receive copies of the final proofs. It is therefore essential that manuscripts should be complete as submitted. Changes to the text at the proof stage are time-consuming and expensive and may be charged to the author. The manuscript should include, in the following order:

Title page: Giving a concise but informative title, the names of the authors (indicating by the symbol * address for correspondence), the addresses of the institutions where the work was carried out. Any necessary footnotes (e.g. giving author’s present addresses) should be given on the title page. To facilitate communication between the authors, editors and publishers, the author should furnish a telex or fax number on the title page of the manuscript. |

Abstract (max. 250 words). Should be as informative as possible for abstracting journals. |

Text: (i) Introduction, (ii) Experimental (Materials and methods), (iii) Theory (if required), (iv) Results, (v) Discussion (which may be combined with Results), (vi) Acknowledgements, (vii) Footnotes (if any). |

Abbreviations should be kept to a minimum and defined as a footnote to the first page of the main text. Chemical and biochemical nomenclature should follow the recommendations of IUPAC and IUB. SI units and their recommended alternatives should be used for physical quantities. |

Equations should be typewritten whenever possible, and any special typefaces or alphabets required should be indicated in the left margin. Subscripts must be recognisable as such. Formulae should, as far as possible, be written in ‘linear?form, i.e. a/(b+c). Equations should be numbered consecutively in arabic numerals (Eq. 1) inside the right margin. |

Footnotes to the title of the paper are not given reference symbols; those to the authors are numbered and placed at the bottom of the title page. Footnotes to the text are numbered consecutively; those to tables should be indicated by superscript lower-case letters (or asterisks for significance values and other statistical data). |

Genus and species names should be in italics. |

Safety and ethics: Authors are responsible for drawing the attention of the reader to hazards associated with any procedures described, and for ensuring that their work complies with normal ethical practices. | Please note: This journal does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents at this time. Please use Word's "Save As" option to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.
Figures and Tables
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Color figures will be published free of charge - online as well as in print. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All figures (photographs, graphs or diagrams) and tables should be cited in the text, and each numbered consecutively throughout. The placement of figures and tables should be indicated in the left margin.

References
References should be cited in the text, e.g. (Bryant and Wolfe 1989; Dustin 1984; Müller et al. 1991). References should be listed at the end of the paper in alphabetical order, except for papers by three or more authors (given in the text only as ‘et al.?, which should be grouped in chronological order after any other papers by the first author. The reference list should include only published papers or accepted papers which are ‘in press? ‘Personal communication?and ‘unpublished work?may be used in the text only; the Editor may request documentation of these citations. The style to be used for journal papers, articles and books is shown as follows:

Illustrations The preferred figure formats are EPS for vector graphics exported from a drawing program and TIFF for halftone illustrations. EPS files must always contain a preview in TIFF of the figure. The file name (one file for each figure) should include the figure number. Figure legends should be included in the text and not in the figure file.
Data formats Save your file in two formats:

Electronic supplementary material
Electronic Supplementary Material (ESM) for a paper will be published in the electronic edition of this journal provided the material is:
 ESM may consist of:

information that cannot be printed: animations, video clips, sound recordings (use QuickTime, .avi, .mpeg, animated GIFs, or any other common file format) |

information that is more convenient in electronic form: sequences, spectral data, etc. |

large quantities of original data that relate to the paper, e.g. additional tables, large numbers of illustrations (color and black & white), etc. | Legends must be brief, self-sufficient explanations of the ESM. ESM is to be numbered and referred to as S1, S2, etc. After acceptance for publication, ESM will be published as received from the author in the online version only. Reference will be given in the printed version.
After acceptance
Upon acceptance of your article you will receive a link to the special Springer web page with questions related to:

Open Choice In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular subscription-based article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springer's online platform SpringerLink. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles. Springer Open Choice [http://springer.com/openchoice] |

Copyright transfer Authors will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the Publisher (or grant the Publisher exclusive publication and dissemination rights). This will ensure the widest possible protection and dissemination of information under copyright laws. Open Choice articles do not require transfer of copyright as the copyright remains with the author. In opting for open access, they agree to the Springer Open Choice Licence. |

Online first The article will be published online after receipt of the corrected proofs. This is the official first publication citable with the DOI. After release of the printed version, the paper can also be cited by issue and page numbers. |

Proof reading The purpose of the proof is to check for typesetting errors and the completeness and accuracy of the text, tables and figures. Substantial changes in content, e.g., new results, corrected values, title and authorship, are not allowed without the approval of the Editor. After online publication, further changes can only be made in the form of an Erratum, which will be hyperlinked to the article. |

Offprints/Reprints Offprints can be ordered by the corresponding author. When you order offprints, you are entitled to receive in addition a pdf file of your article for your own personal use. One complimentary copy of the printed issue is supplied to the corresponding author. |
