About the journal

The Journal of Microbiological Methods publishes original articles, notes and review articles on novel and/or state-of-the-art methods as well as significant improvements to existing methods. Interesting applications of current methods will also be published. All aspects of microbiology excluding virology are covered. These include analytical microbiology, biotechnology, biochemical microbiolgy, clinical microbiology, computer applications as applied to microbiology research, diagnostics (including PCR, fingerprinting and typing), environmental microbiology, food, genomics, proteomics, ground water microbiology, infectious diseases, microbial ecology, microbial genetics, microbial pathogenesis and immunology, microbial physiology, microbial ultrastructure, molecular microbiology, mycology, parasitology, plant-microbe interactions, public health, rumen microbiology, and veterinary microbiology.

Instructions to Authors
The journal publishes full-length articles describing original work, notes (short concise communications), and review articles on methods, including their development, applicability, and present status. Microbiologists are encouraged to submit to the editors product information and a summary of articles published elsewhere with relevance to the readers of the journal. This information is subject to editorial approval. Articles describing the use of computers with software description are welcome. Submissions of a paper to this journal is understood to imply that it has not previously been published and that it is not being considered for publication elsewhere.

Review Articles: Reviews that do not contain experimental (hands-on) establishment of a method, but instead concern a summary or an evaluation of previously described methods, are welcome. Generally, the author should contact an editorial board member or editor familiar with the area who would then act as a sponsor. The name and address of the sponsor should be listed on the front page of the manuscript and will appear in the front page of the published article. Unsolicited articles may be sent to an Editor or Editor-in-Chief but it is preferred that approval of the topic area is obtained before the review is written.

Notes: A "note" is intended for the presentation of brief observations that do not warrant full-length papers. A Note should be brief descriptions of novel apparatus or techniques, requiring real ingenuity on the author's part, that offer definite advantages over those already available. The abstract should be no more than 50 words, have no section headings in the body and report methods, results, and discussion in a single section. The text should be kept to a minimum and if possible should not exceed 1,000 words; the number of figures and tables should also be kept to a minimum (2-3 maximum). Materials and methods should be described in the text, not in figure legends or table footnotes. Acknowledgments should be presented as in full-length papers, but no separate heading is used. The References section is identical to the full-length papers.

Preparation of Text. Electronic submission of the article is preferred e.g. through the Elsevier website http://www.elsevier.com/locate/jmicmeth or as an attachment to an e-mail. Alternatively paper versions may be sent for review but this will slow down the editorial process. All subsequent stages will also be electronic including submission of revised maunscripts. After final acceptance, the publisher requires and additional version of the manuscript.

References References should be listed by author name and year of publication in parentheses in the body of the text [i.e.(Crissman and Hadley, 1995) two authors; (Crissman et al., 1998) more than two authors} and listed alphabetically in the reference section. References to journals should contain the names and initials of all authors, the year of publication, the title of the paper, the title of the periodical abbreviated according to List of Serial Title Word Abbreviations (available from the International Serials Data System, 20 rue Bachaumont, 75002 Paris, France. ISBN 2-904938-02-8), the volume number, and page number. References to books should also include the title of the book, the editors, and publishers. See examples below.

Schüler, D., Uhl, R., Bäuerlein, E., 1995. A simple light scattering method to assay magnetism in Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense. FEMS Microbiol. Lett. 132, 139--145.

Tyssen, P., 1993. Hybridization with nucleic acid probes. In: Laboratory Techniques in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Vol. 24, Elsevier, Amsterdam, pp. 375-436.

Shockman, G.D., Höltje, J.-V., 1994. Microbial peptidoglycan (murein) hydrolase. In: Ghuysen, J.-M.,Hakenbeck, R.(Eds.), Bacterial Cell Wall. Elsevier, Amsterdam, pp. 131- 166.

Tables and Figures Tables should be compiled on separate sheets with a short descriptive title, and legend if required, and numbered consecutively. The width of all figures and drawings, and photographs where possible, should be about twice their height to yield an optimum printed format. Line figures should be drawn in black ink on white paper or on graph paper with blue of faint grey rulings; graduation in tones will not reproduce. Photoprints are also acceptable. Lettering should be of an appropriate size, taking into account the eventual reduction (preferably not more than one-third). Photographs must be sharp, with good contrast, and printed on glossy or smooth-surfaced paper. Legends should be supplied on separate sheets. Tables, line drawings and photographs should be clearly marked with number, author's name, and orientation (i.e., top). Colour illustrations are welcome and published when they are essential for the understanding of the work. The authors should be prepared to pay the extra cost of 800 Dutch guilders for the first page and 400 Dutch guilders for the additional pages of colour. Authors of (Mini-) Reviews can publish colour free of charge and are encouraged to make optimal use of this feature.Electronic manuscripts: Electronic manuscripts have the advantage that there is no need for the rekeying of text, thereby avoiding the possibility of introducing errors and resulting in reliable and fast delivery of proofs.

The preferred storage medium is a 3 1/2 inch disk in MS-DOS format, although other systems are welcome, e.g., NEC and Macintosh (in this case, save your file in the usual manner, do not use the option `save in MS-DOS format'). Please do not split the article into separate files (title page as one file, text as another, etc.). Ensure that the letter `l' and digit `1' (also letter `O' and digit `0') have been used properly, and structure your article (tabs, indents, etc.) consistently. Characters not available on your wordprocessor (Greek letters, mathematical symbols, etc.) should not be left open but indicated by a unique code (e.g., gralpha, @, #, etc., for the Greek letter ). Such codes should be used consistently throughout the entire text. Please make a list of such codes and provide a key. Do not allow your wordprocessor to introduce word splits and do not use a `justified' layout. Please adhere strictly to the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of the journal. It is very important that you save your file in the wordprocessor format. If your wordprocessor features the option to save files "in flat ASCII", please do not use it. Format your disk correctly and ensure that only the relevant file (one complete article only) is on the disk. Also, specify the type of computer and wordprocessing package used and label the disk with your name and the name of the file on the disk. After final acceptance, your disk plus one, final, printed and exactly matching version (as a printout) should be submitted together to the accepting editor. It is important that the file on disk and the printout are identical. Both will then be forwarded by the editor to Elsevier. Further information may be obtained from the Publisher.
Artwork may also be submitted in electronic format. Descriptions of acceptable formats and further information are given at http://authors.elsevier.com

Proofs and Reprints One proof will be sent to the nominated author to check for typesetting accuracy. No changes from the edited typescript will be allowed. The author will receive a reprint order form which should be completed and returned to Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. From each article 25 free reprints will be sent to the corresponding author. There will be no page charge.
