About the journal
Environmental Monitoring and Assessment emphasizes technical developments and data arising from environmental monitoring and assessment, the use of scientific principles in the design of monitoring systems at the local, regional and global scales, and the use of monitoring data in assessing the consequences of natural resource management actions and pollution risks to man and the environment. The journal covers a wide range of pollutants and examines monitoring systems designed to estimate exposure both at the individual and population levels. The journal also focuses on the development of monitoring systems related to the management of various renewable natural resources in, for instance, agriculture, fisheries and forests. The scope of the journal extends to the use of monitoring in pollution assessment, and particular emphasis is given to the synthesis of monitoring data with toxicological, epidemiological and health data, as well as with pre-market screening results. The journal also includes research and monitoring systems that help assess anthropogenic impacts on natural resources and the environment from numerous activities, such as harvesting, development, and land use changes. Geographic information system analyses and remote sensing studies relating such activities to land cover changes that affect, e.g. biodiversity and global climate change are also within the purview of the journal. Examples of specific areas of interest are:
- The design and development of single medium and multimedia monitoring systems, sampling techniques, optimization of monitoring networks, data handling, quality and assurance procedures, operational costs.
- The scientific basis for monitoring: scaling methods, the use of biological indicators, dynamic and commitment models, pollution indices, etc.
- Exposure assessment: the development of monitoring systems which allow direct or indirect estimates of pollutant exposure to critical receptors.
- Methods and procedures of pollution risk assessment, relating to sources, pathways of exposure, trends in time and space, anticipatory systems, evaluation of environmental quality and of management practice.
Monitoring systems designed to detect changes in land use patterns.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscript
The manuscript is to be submitted in triplicate directly to:
The Journals Editorial Office EMAS
Kluwer Academic Publishers
P.O. Box 990
3300 AZ Dordrecht
The Netherlands
All papers will be submitted to referees for review. On a separate sheet submit the names of four qualified (unbiased) referees with their full addresses.
Typing
Use double spacing and leave a generous left-hand margin. All pages must be numbered, and all headings/sub-headings must be consistent. Unusual or handwritten symbols must be clearly identified. Underline only words or letters to appear in italics. Submission in electronic form of the final version of the manuscript is compulsory.
Title, Name, Address
Provide the title in full, author?/SPAN>s name, affiliation, and present address (for receipt of proofs, if different from the affiliation). If the title is longer than 72 characters including spaces, provide a brief title for use as a running head.
Abstract
Include an abstract of 100-200 words in English. For papers in a language other than English, the abstract should be an extensive summary.
Tables
Number all tables with Roman numerals and include a short title. Vertical lines between columns are to be avoided. Ensure all tables are referred to in the text.
Figures
All figures must be suitable for reproduction without being retouched or redrawn. Check that all lettering will still be legible after the figure is reduced to fit the page.
Use Indian ink on white or transparent paper. A glossy print is equally acceptable.
Refer to all photographs, diagrams and graphs as ?/SPAN>Figure?/SPAN> in the text (abbreviated to ?/SPAN>Fig.?/SPAN> only in the caption). Write your name and the figure lightly on the back in blue pencil, and indicate in the margin of the text the most appropriate location for the figure. Indicate the top of the figure clearly.
The captions should be collected on a separate sheet.
In addition to hard-copy printouts of figures, authors are requested to supply the electronic version of figures in either Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) or TIFF format.
Formulas
Subscripts and superscripts should be set off clearly. Use a full stop for decimals, and reserve crosses for multiplication. The sign for ?/SPAN>about equal to?/SPAN> is [ape]; ?/SPAN>of the order of?/SPAN> is indicated by ~. Vectors are printed in bold face (indicated by wavy underlining in the manuscript). Distinguish clearly between the letter O and the zero 0, the letter l and the number one, kappa and k, mu and u, nu and v, eta and n, etc.
Units
The metric system is to be used, preferably the Syst?/SPAN>me International (SI).
Abbreviative units only when preceded by a numeral, and note that only the singular form is used and is not followed by a full stop. See the Style Manual of the American Institute of Physics (335 East 45th Street, New York 17, N.Y.) for details. For 109 we prefer the notation G instead of B; for 10-3 we prefer T. ?/SPAN>Degrees Kelvin?/SPAN> is K, not ?/SPAN>K.
Footnotes
Avoid using footnotes if possible. However, if necessary, identify them by one asterisk, two asterisks, one dagger, etc.
References
References should be given at the end of the paper in alphabetical and chronological order, in this manner;
Rijkoort, P.J., Schmidt, F.H., Velds, C.A., and Wieringa, J.: 1970, ?/SPAN>A Meteorological 80-m Tower near Rotterdam?/SPAN>, Boundary-Layer Meteorol. 1, 5-17.
Taylor, P.A.: 1970, ?/SPAN>A Model of Airflow above Changes in Surface Heat Flux, Temperature and Roughness for Neutral and Unstable Conditions?/SPAN>, Boundary-Layer Meteorol. 1, 18-39.
The name of the journal (abbreviated following the system used by the International Astronomical Union and the American Institute of Physics, e.g., Solar Phys.) and the names of books are underlined, and the volume number has wavy underlining. In the text the literature is referred to by the name of the author and the year of publication, e.g., ?/SPAN>Johnson et al. (1960)?/SPAN>, when forming a part of a sentence, or ?/SPAN>(Johnson et al., 1960)?/SPAN>, when forming an addition to a sentence, between parentheses. If a paper has three or more authors, then it is referred to by the name of the first author and the expression ?/SPAN>et al.?/SPAN> (in italics).
Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author by e-mail (if no e-mail address is available or appears to be out of order, proofs will be sent by regular mail).
Your response, with or without corrections, should be sent within 72 hours. Please do not make any corrections to the PDF file.
Minor corrections (+/- 10) should be sent as an e-mail attachment to: proofscorrection@wkap.nl. Always quote the four-letter journal code and article number and the PIPS No. from your proof in the subject field of your e-mail.
Extensive corrections must be clearly marked on a printout of the PDF file and should be sent by first-class mail (airmail overseas).
Offprints
Fifty offprints of each article will be provided free of charge. Additional offprints (both hard copies and PDF files) can be ordered by means of an offprint order form supplied with the proofs.
