About the journal

Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics provides a medium for the publication of papers from the fields of experimental gerontology and clinical and social geriatrics. The principal aim of the journal is to facilitate the exchange of information between specialists in these three fields of gerontological research. Experimental papers dealing with the basic mechanisms of aging at molecular, cellular, tissue or organ levels will be published.
Clinical papers will be accepted if they provide sufficiently new information or are of fundamental importance for the knowledge of human aging. Purely descriptive clinical papers will be accepted only if the results permit further interpretation. Papers dealing with anti-aging pharmacological preparations in humans are welcome. Papers on the social aspects of geriatrics will be accepted if they are of general interest regarding the epidemiology of aging and the efficiency and working methods of the social organizations for the health care of the elderly.

Instructions to Authors

Contributions should be sent in triplicate to the Editor-in-Chief or any one of the Associate Editors who will arrange for them to be evaluated. Manuscripts are accepted on the understanding that they report unpublished work that is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that all named authors have agreed to its submission and that if accepted it will not be published in the same form, in any language, without the consent of the Publishers. Manuscripts should be carefully checked before submission; no change to the original will be allowed after acceptance for publication. Papers should be in English. Authors whose mother-tongue is not English are requested to have their manuscripts checked for linguistic correctness before submission.

Types of papers: (1) Original papers reporting results of fundamental research in the fields defined in Aims and Scope (see inside front cover). (2) Review articles will usually follow an invitation from the Editor-in-Chief; other such papers will be accepted if they give a valuable survey and synthesis based upon a critical interpretation of the recent research data or hypotheses. Review papers of interdisciplinary character are especially welcome. Before writing a review, the authors are requested to send a brief, but informative outline of the planned article to the Editor-in-Chief for a preliminary consultation.

Manuscripts should be typewritten, double spaced (as should References, Tables and Figure legends) with a wide margin and on one side of the paper only. They should be accompanied by a separate page bearing title, authors' full names, affiliation, telephone and fax numbers. The author to whom correspondence and reprint requests are to sent should be clearly indicated. Division of the article: (1) Abstract (+/- 200 words) and 3-6 keywords (indexing terms). (2) Introduction, (3) Materials and Methods, (4) Results, (5) Discussions, followed by Acknowledgements and References, Footnotes should be avoided.

Figures: Line drawings should be drawn in black ink on white paper. Alternatively, sharp photoprints may be provided. Lettering should be large enough to be legible after reduction to page width. Half-tone illustrations should be submitted as black-and-white prints on glossy paper with as much contrast as possible. Reproduction in color will have to be approved by the Editor-in-Chief and the cost will have to be borne by the author. Legends must be typed on a separate sheet and not included on the figures.

Nomenclature: Authors are requested to follow the instructions given in Information for Contributors to Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, which is available free of charge from BBA Editorial Secretariat, P.O.Box 1345, 100 BH Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Tables should bear a short descriptive title and should be typed on separate sheets. They should be numbered with Arabic numerals and contain only horizontal lines.

References:

a) Within Text:

Within the text, references should be ordered, following the following format:

  • Groups of references should be listed first chronologically, then alphabetically.
  • Single author: the author's name (without initials, unless there is ambiguity) and the year of publication;
  • Two authors: both authors' names and the year of publication;
  • Three or more authors: first authors name followed by 'et al.' and the year of publication;
  • Citations may be made directly (or parenthetically);
  • More than one reference from the same author(s) in the same year must be identified by the letters "a", "b", "c", etc., placed after the year of publication.

Example: "...as demonstrated (White, 1990; Adams and Lee, 1995; Smith, 1995; Green, 1996a, 1996b; Black et al., 2002;). Kramer et al. (2000) have recently shown...."

b) Reference List:

For the ordering of alphabetic (name/year) reference listings, the following rules apply:

  • References are arranged alphabetically;
  • For references with the same first author:
  • First list single author works arranged by date.
  • Then list works with one co-author arranged alphabetically by co-author, then by date.
  • Then follow works with more than one co-author arranged by date.
