Media, Culture & Society provides a major international forum for the presentation of research and discussion concerning the media, including the newer information and communication technologies, within their political, economic, cultural and historical contexts.
The journal is interdisciplinary, regularly engaging with a wider range of issues in cultural and social analysis. Its focus is on substantive topics and on critique and innovation in theory and method.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscript Submission Guidelines:
Articles should not exceed 8000 words, including notes and references - articles longer than this will not be refereed. They should be submitted in triplicate using the format outlined below and should be accompanied by an abstract of 100 to 150 words and up to 5 keywords. End notes, if necessary, should not exceed more than 6. Acknowledgement of receipt will be given and they will then be refereed anonymously. Articles should normally be in English. Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions from copyright holders for reproducing any previously published material. Unsolicited manuscripts will not be returned.
Format for Submitted Work
The name(s) of the author(s) should appear on a separate title page only. Articles must be typed in double spacing on white paper, using one side of the sheet. UK or US spelling may be used with '-ize' spellings as given in the Oxford English Dictionary (e.g. organize, recognize). Indicate italic type by underlining and use single quotation marks. Tables and figures should be clearly labelled and explained in the text and camera-ready artwork for all figures must be supplied. Essential footnotes should be indicated by superscript figures in the text and collected on a single page at the end of the article. References cited in the text should read thus: Brown (1992: 63-4), Brown and Smith (1987, 1980). Use 'et al.' when citing a work by more than two authors, e.g. Brown et al. (1988). The letters a, b, c etc. should be used to distinguish different citations by the same author in the same year, e.g. Brown (1985a, 1985b). All references cited in the text should be listed alphabetically and in full after the notes, using the following style:
Van Zoonen, L. (1994) Feminist Media Studies. London: Sage.
Fraser, N. (1989) 'Rethinking the Public Sphere: A Contribution to the Critique of Actually Existing Democracy', Social Text 25(6): 56-80.
Porter, V. and S. Hasselbach (1991) 'Beyond Balanced Pluralism: Broadcasting in Germany' pp. 94-115 in P. Dahlgren and C. Sparks (eds) Communication and Citizenship. London: Routledge.
