Instructions to Authors
Submission GuidelinesInternational Security welcomes submissions via is@harvard.edu or regular mail:
Email submissions:
Attach the manuscript as a Microsoft Word document (using U.S. settings) and send to IS@harvard.edu. The body of the email may serve as a cover letter and must include contact information (mailing addresses, phone, fax, and email addresses) for all authors.
Mail submissions:
Please mail three copies of the manuscript to:
Sarah B. Buckley, Editorial Assistant International Security Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs (BCSIA) Harvard University 79 JFK Street Cambridge, MA 02138
The cover letter should include contact information for all authors (mailing addresses, phone, fax, and email address).
In all cases, please adhere to the following submission guidelines:
- Manuscripts must be roughly 8,000-13,000 words (including footnotes). As a new policy, we cannot consider manuscripts that exceed 15,000 words.
- Manuscripts should not contain authors' names or any references that might identify the author. International Security does not release authors' names to outside reviewers and, likewise, does not release reviewers' names to authors. We feel that this provides the fairest method of assessment on all sides.
- Manuscripts should include an abstract.
Keep in mind that it normally takes a few weeks to receive an acknowledgement letter to confirm the receipt of a manuscript, and up to three months or more to reach a decision.
For answers to other specific questions, please read our stylesheet.
