Such analyses involve comparisons of the performance of different economic systems or subsystems, studies linking outcomes to system characteristics in one economy, and investigations of the origin and evolution of one or more economic systems. Empirical, theoretical, and institutional approaches are also published.

Research Areas Include:

• Empirical analyses displaying appropriate sensitivity to the problems of comparing data generated by different economic systems and employing methodologies that permit the researcher to distinguish among the effects of systems and other causal variables
• Institutional descriptions accompanied by analyses of the interaction of institutions with the system Theoretical work developing new ways of viewing economic systems and their operations or explaining the behavior of systems or agents within open and closed systems

Instructions to Authors

The Journal of Comparative Economics is devoted to the analysis and study of contemporary, historical, and hypothetical economic systems. Such analyses may involve comparisons of the performance of different economic systems or subsystems, studies linking outcomes to system characteristics in one economy, or investigations of the origin and evolution of one or more economic systems. Empirical, theoretical, and institutional approaches are equally welcome. Empirical analyses should display appropriate sensitivity to the problems of comparing data generated by different economic systems and seek to employ methodologies that permit the researcher to distinguish between the effects of the system and those of other casual variables on observed outcomes. Theoretical work that develops new ways of viewing economic systems and their operation or explains the behavior of systems or of agents within a system will also be considered for publication. Authors of technical papers are requested to provide a verbal explanation of their results as part of their conclusions. Although papers limited to the description of institutions will generally not be published in the journal, such descriptions accompanied by the analysis of the interaction of the institution with the system are welcome. The journal is open to all viewpoints and ideologies. Nevertheless, authors should recognize that the Editor will not publish material that, in his opinion, cannot be expected to command the assent of the readership due to deficient or inadequate methodology.

It is the policy to provide authors with an editorial decision within three months of the acknowledgment of submissions.

Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate to Professor John P. Bonin, Editor, Journal of Comparative Economics, Department of Economics, Wesleyan University, 238 Church Street, Middletown, CT 06459-0007, USA.

It is the policy of the journal to send manuscripts to referees without authorial identification. Please refrain from identifying the author(s) in the manuscript, footnotes, or references. Please prepare a cover page for the Editor that includes the title of the manuscript, the names and affiliations of all authors, the complete mailing address, and the e-mail address of the author to whom correspondence should be sent. Please include on this cover page the acknowledgment footnote if one exists and delete this footnote from the manuscript. The first page of the manuscript, i.e., the page following the cover page, should repeat the title and include a short abstract. Failure to conform with these directions may result in a delay in the reviewing process.

Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work will not be nor is currently submitted elsewhere, that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors, and that any person cited as a source of personal communications has approved such citation.

Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if it is accepted for publication, copyright in the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned to the Association for Comparative Economic Studies. The Copyright Transfer Agreement should be signed by the appropriate person(s).

Any statements in the article once it is accepted by the Editor remain the sole responsibility of the author(s), including personal communications from other scholars. They represent only the opinions of the author(s) and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editors, the Association, or the Publisher.
