About the journal

The journal publishes original material concerned with all aspects of strategic management. It is devoted to the improvement and further development of the theory and practice of strategic management and it is designed to appeal to both practising managers and academics. Papers acceptable to an editorial board acting as referees are published. The journal also publishes communications in the form of research notes or comments from readers on published papers or current issues. Editorial comments and invited papers on practices and developments in strategic management appear from time to time as warranted by new developments. Overall, SMJ provides a communication forum for advancing strategic management theory and practice. Such major topics as strategic resource allocation; organization structure; leadership; entrepreneurship and organizational purpose; methods and techniques for evaluating and understanding competitive, technological, social, and political environments; planning processes; and strategic decision processes are included in the journal.

Instructions to Authors

Initial Manuscript Submission. Submit four copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to the journal editor:

Professor Dan Schendel
Krannert Graduate School of Management
Purdue University
West Lafayette
Indiana 47907
U.S.A

Authors must also supply:

  • an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
  • a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
  • permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author.

Electronic submission. The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We are able to use most word processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect and TeX or one of its derivatives.

Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.

Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. All submissions must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.

  • The title page must list the full title, and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full addresses, including email, telephone and fax, of all authors.
  • Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
  • Supply a running headline or short title of up to 60 characters for all articles (except Research Notes and Communications)
  • Supply a summary of up to 100 words for all articles. A summary is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
  • Include up to six keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
  • Research Notes and Communications should be submitted in a fashion similar to a manuscript. Such notes and communications should not exceed 10 printed pages and should not ordinarily contain tables or figures. A summary is required.

Reference style. References should be quoted in the text as name and year within brackets and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. Where reference is made to more than one work by the same author published in the same year, identify each citation in the text as follows: (Collins, 1998a, 1998b). Where three or more authors are listed in the reference list, please cite in the text as (Collins et al., 1998)

All references must be complete and accurate. Where possible the DOI for the reference should be included at the end of the reference. Online citation should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:

Jensen M, Zajac EJ. 2004. Corporate elites and corporate strategy: how demographic preferences and structural position shape the scope of the firm. Strategic Management Journal 25(6): 507¨C524. DOI: 10.1002/smj.393

Rumelt RP, Schendel D, Teece DJ. 1994. Fundamental Issues in Strategy: A Research Agenda. Harvard Business School Press: Boston MA.

Bowman EH, Singh H. 1990. Overview of corporate restructuring: trends and consequences. In Corporate Restructuring, Rock L, Rock RH (eds). McGraw-Hill: New York; 1¨C16.

Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet, with the lead author's name and the figure number, with the top of the figure indicated, on the reverse. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Tints are not acceptable; lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. [Supply artwork at the intended size for printing (maximum width 75mm for one column or 155mm over two columns).

The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal will be charged to the author. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.

Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author(s) must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of each volume of Strategic Management Journal. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.

Further Information. Page proofs will not ordinarily be returned to the author prior to publication. Therefore it will be appreciated if manuscripts and illustrations conform from the outset to the style of the journal. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. 25 complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
