The British Educational Research Journal is an international medium for the publication of articles of interest to researchers in education and has rapidly become a major focal point for the publication of educational research from throughout the world.

The journal is interdisciplinary in approach, and includes reports of case studies, experiments and surveys, discussions of conceptual and methodological issues and of underlying assumptions in educational research, accounts of research in progress, and book reviews.

Papers accepted become the copyright of the British Educational Research Association, unless otherwise specifically agreed.

Manuscripts should be sent to The Editors, British Educational Research Journal, Institute of Education, Manchester Metropolitan University, 799 Wilmslow Road, Manchester M20 2RR, UK. Email: berj@mmu.ac.uk. Articles should normally be between 5000 and 7000 words and can only be considered if three complete copies of each manuscript are submitted along with an electronic disk.

Manuscripts should be typed on one side of the paper, double spaced, with ample margins, and bear the title of the contribution, name(s) of the author(s) and the address where the work was carried out. Each article should be accompanied by an abstract of 100-150 words on a separate sheet. Abstracts should be accurate summaries including the rationale for the article, methods employed (if relevant in empirical reports) and conclusions drawn. The full postal and email address of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included. All pages should be numbered. Footnotes to the text should be avoided. Sponsorship of the research reported (e.g. by research councils, government departments and agencies, etc.) should be declared.

Non-discriminatory writing. Please ensure that writing is free from bias, for instance by substituting 'he' or 'his' by 'he or she' or 's/he' or 'his/her' and by using non-racist language. Authors might wish to note the BERA Ethical Guidelines for Educational Research.

Contributors will normally receive a decision on their article within 12 weeks of its receipt by the Editor. Rejected manuscripts will not normally be returned to contributors unless sufficient stamps/international postal coupons have been sent.

Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed out on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate sheet. Tables and figures should be numbered by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to symbols.

Figures. Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher.

References should be indicated in the typescript by giving the author's name, with the year of publication in parentheses. If several papers by the same author and from the same year are cited, a, b, c, etc. should be put after the year of publication. The references should be listed in full at the end of the paper in the following standard form:

For books:
Norton, P. & Wiberg, K. (1998) Teaching with technology (Orlando, FL, Harcourt Brace).

For articles:

Titles of journals should not be abbreviated.

Proofs will be sent to authors by email if there is sufficient time to do so. They should be corrected and returned to the Editor within three days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.

Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by email as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the authors' preferential rate of ?5.00/$25.00 per copy.
