Journal of Environmental Science and Management

The Journal of Environmental Science and Management (JESAM) (ISSN 0119-11449) is an Institute for Scientific Information or ISI-indexed journal that is produced semi-annually by the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).

It features research articles, theoretical/conceptual papers, discussion papers, book reviews, and theses abstracts on a wide range of environmental topics and issues.

Focus and Scope

The Journal of Environmental Science and Management (JESAM) is an Institute for Scientific Information or ISI-indexed journal that is produced semi-annually by the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).

It features research articles, theoretical/conceptual papers, discussion papers, book reviews, and theses abstracts on a wide range of environmental topics and issues.

It welcomes local and foreign papers dealing on the following areas of specialization in environmental science and management: environmental planning and management; protected areas development, planning, and management; community-based resources management; environmental chemistry and toxicology; environmental restoration; social theory and environment; and environmental security and management. It is governed by an Editorial Board composed of appointed faculty members with one representative from each college in UPLB.

Peer Review Process

Manuscripts are reviewed “blind.” Authors are requested to submit their name, professional position, and institution on a removable cover sheet. They should also mask any items of self-reference where they appear. Papers must represent an original work and must not be under consideration by other publishers. 

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to some of its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Author Guidelines

Style:

  1. Authors should submit three copies of their manuscript typed double-spaced on white A4 (210 x 297 mm) paper, with margins of 2.54 cm on all sides. Text should be in Times Roman and 12 points. They should provide a diskette (high density) copy that is readable on PC MS-Word.

  2. An abstract of 200 words or less, summarizing the main points of the article, should accompany the manuscript. Paragraphs should be justified (without indention) and double-spaced in between. Sentences should be separated by one space.

  3. Any statistical material should be brief and simple.

  4. The metric system of measurement should be used. Each figure, table and map should be mentioned in numerical sequence. Each figure is numbered with an arabic number and sentence style is used for the caption (without a period at the end). Tables should be typed separately from the text, one table per sheet. Each should be complete with necessary endnotes. Maps should have a scale. Illustrations should be of professional quality and ready for reproduction. Maps and illustrations should be on white paper, and should be capable of legible reduction to a size no larger than 11.43 x 17.78 cm (full page) and preferably no larger than 11.43 x 8.89 cm (half page). All illustrations should be accompanied by captions typed on a separate sheet.

  5. Each reference should be complete and accurate. Reference(s) found in the text are italicized.  The author-date form of citation in the text should be used. (Example:  The challenge is to become masters of the further evolution of our own species (Jonas 1985); for works by three authors: Dove, Fox, and Lee (1988); for works by four or more authors: Ching et al. (1993)). Several works by the same author(s) published in the same year should be distinguished by adding lowercase letters to the dates, alphabetized by title (ignoring articles and prepositions). (Example: Fox 1986a, 1986b). Bibliographic references should be listed according to the following examples:

    • journal article: Mendoza, G.A. and R. Prabhu. 1999. “Evaluating and Selecting Criteria and Indicators of Forest Sustainability: A Case Study on Participatory Assessment Under CBFM in the Philippines.” Journal of Environmental Science and Management 2(2): 33-53.

    • book: Forder, A. 1974. Concepts in Social Administration: A Framework for Analysis. Routledge and Keegan Paul, London and Boston. 186 pp.

    • portion of book: Espaldon, V.O. et al. 1999. “When Marginalized People Chart Their Own Directions: Dynamics of CBRM in the Philippines.” In: CBRM: Experiences in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, California and the Philippines   (eds.   6. Scientific names should be italicized. Technical terms, abbreviations and acronyms must be defined.

  7. The manuscript contents should be arranged as follows: a) Title of Article; b) Author’s complete name, designation, mailing address, email address (written on a separate sheet);c) Abstract (200 words or less); d) Key words (at least two); e) Introduction; f) Materials and Methods; g) Results and Discussion; h) Conclusion and Recommendations; i) Acknowledgment; j) References; k) Tables; and l) Figures.
Manuscript Length:

Manuscripts should not exceed 25 pages of double-spaced typescript excluding tables and figures.

 

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
