About the journal

Computers & Geosciences is a journal devoted to all aspects of computing in the geosciences.

Computers & Geosciences brings to its readers information about databases, data structures, computer graphics, numerical methods, simulation models, statistical and expert system methods, image analysis, spatial analysis and other topics of interest to geoscientists working with computers. The term Geoscience is used in its broadest sense, encompassing geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geomathematics, oceanography, environmental science, hydrology, geography, remote sensing and geographic information systems. Papers describing computer methods are preferred, particularly those dealing with algorithms and computer programs, accompanied by examples of their application. From 1975-1995, programs were always printed in the journal. Now only short programs, subroutines and pseudocode are printed, and source code and test datasets associated with published papers are made available for public distribution on Internet via anonymous FTP from the server "iamg.org".

In addition to full-length research contributions, the journal also publishes Short Notes, Book and Software Reviews, and Letters to the Editor. ANON (Another Node On the Net) is a new column dealing with Internet issues and resources of interest to geoscientists. Every year there are one or more Special Issues devoted to particular subjects, assembled by Guest Editors. The publication is intended to serve workers in academia, industry and government. Students, teachers, researchers and practitioners should benefit from ideas in the journal.

Instructions to Authors

Guide for Authors

Submission of Papers
Authors are requested to submit their manuscript and figures by electronic submission (see instructions at http://authors.elsevier.com). Two copies of computer code associated with manuscripts (if there is any) should be submitted on diskette or CD to Editorial Office, Computers and Geosciences, P.O. Box 26128, 72 Robertson Road, Nepean, Ontario, Canada, K2H 9RO, Tel: +1 613 828 8500; Fax: +1 613 828 0696; E-mail: candg@iamg.org. Please make sure that this material is labelled with the author's name, title of the paper and paper number assigned during the electronic submission of the manuscript. Guidelines for submitting code are available from http://www.iamg.org/CGEditor/code_submission.htm.

All news items, letters to the editor, announcements, etc., to be placed in Computers and Geosciences may be also be submitted through any one of the Editors. Other business related to the International Association for Mathematical Geology, such as membership and subscriptions to any of the three journals sponsored by the Association (Computers and Geosciences, Mathematical Geology and Natural Resources Research) should be sent to:
IAMG Office
4 Cataraqui St., Suite 310
Kingston ON K7K 1Z7
Canada
E-mail:office@iamg.org
FAX: +1 613 531 0626
Tel: +1 613 544 6878

Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.

Types of Contributions
Original papers; short notes; book and software reviews, letters to the editor.

Manuscript Preparation
General: Manuscripts must be double-spaced with wide margins, using a font size of 12 or 10 pt. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible.

The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. A list of about five keywords is to be supplied by the author. Facilities are not available at present to process papers in languages other than English. References must be complete (including volume, issue number, and page range) and should be listed alphabetically at the end of the paper.

Paper Length: Each manuscript should be no longer that 5000 words.
Abstracts: All papers are to have an abstract of no more than 300 words. Papers of less than 1500 words may be considered as short notes and, therefore, do not need an abstract.
Text: Follow this order when preparing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgments, References, Appendix, Figure Captions and then Tables. Sections in text should be numbered. Do not import the Figures or Tables into the final electronic version of your text, although embedding is requested for the initial review stage (see the instructions for electronic submission, http://authors.elsevier.com. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote.
References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the authors' name (without initials) and year of publication (e.g. "Since Peterson (1993) has shown that..." or "This is in agreement with results obtained later (Kramer, 1994)". For three or more authors use the first author followed by "et al.", in the text. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors' names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list. References should be given in the following form:

Illustrations:
Photographs, charts and diagrams (in digital formats) are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. All figures are to have a caption. A list of captions should be supplied on a separate sheet. Parts of figures should be labelled with capital letters, eg. A, B, C, etc. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.

Colour:
If you submit usable colour figures then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour in the digital version (e.g., via ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. Please note: Because of technical complications which can arise by converting colour figures to grey scale (for the printed version should you not opt for colour in print) please submit in addition usable black and white versions corresponding to all the colour illustrations.

For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.

Tables:
Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).

Proofs
By default, PDF-proofs will be sent by e-mail to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt, unless a preference for paper proofs is expressed. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Paper proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department, Elsevier Science, Bampfylde Street, Exeter, EX1 2AH, UK. Elsevier will do everything possible to get your article corrected and published as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are sent back to us in one communication, by the corresponding author. Subsequent corrections will not be possible, so please ensure your first sending is complete.

Offprints
Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints after initial printing will incur a 50% surcharge.

Copyright
All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations.
