About the journal
Computers & Chemical Engineering is primarily a journal of record for new developments in the application of computing and systems technology to chemical engineering problems. Several major areas of chemical engineering study are represented in the journal, including: Process and product synthesis, analysis and design. Dynamic analysis and control of chemical processes. Design methods for chemical engineering equipment, including chemical reactors, staged separation units, chromatographic and membrane separations, etc. Development of novel numerical methods and applications of computational analysis for transport problems involving fluid flow, heat transfer, reaction and/or mass transfer. Applications of novel computing and numerical analysis in chemical engineering science, especially involving molecular modelling applications. Process operations (e.g. supply chain management, integrated manufacturing systems, reliability, safety, scheduling). Articles published cover different aspects of the application of computing to one or more of these various areas, including new applications of established methods, comparisons of alternative methodologies, descriptions of state-of-the-art industrial applications and significant computing developments targeted at training/education. Reports of software implementations must feature novel uses of state-of-the-art computing technologies. Computers & Chemical Engineering publishes full-length articles, survey papers, journal reviews, Short Notes and Letters to the Editor.
Instructions to Authors
General All contributions should conform to the Aims & Scope shown at the front of the journal. Only original papers will be considered. The receipt of a paper by the Editor is held to imply that submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors, that it has not previously been published in any language, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted for publication it will not be published elsewhere without the written consent of the Editor. The official language of the journal is English. Papers will be reviewed for proper English construction. Authors for whom English is a foreign language are recommended to have the manuscript thoroughly checked and corrected before submission.
The journal publishes full length papers, reviews, short notes and letters to the Editors. Full length papers - should be complete and authoritative accounts of work which has special significance and must be presented clearly and concisely. Reviews - authors intending to offer a review article or a comparative survey are advised first to contact the journal Editor. Short Notes are published in the journal for early communication of important results, extensions to recent publications, or brief descriptions of new applications, etcetera. Notes must be limited to 8 pages of double spaced typescript. Letters to the Editors on subjects relevant to the readership will be considered for publication. Letters commenting on previously published articles will generally be sent to the authors of those articles to provide an opportunity for a response prior to publication. Letters should normally be limited to two pages of double spaced typescript.
Submission of Papers Five copies of all new manuscripts are required. All authors are requested to include a note of their fax number and E-mail address when submitting their typescript.
All new manuscripts should be submitted directly the Editor: Professor G V Reklaitis, School of Chemical Engineering, Purdue University, CHME Building 1283, West Lafayette, IN-47907-1283, USA (Fax number: +1 (317) 494 0805)
It is now possible to submit your paper online and benefit from the considerably shorter time required to reach an editorial decision about publication. For all further information, please go to the journal's homepage on www.elsevier.com/locate/compchemeng, or directly to http://authors.elsevier.com .
The original manuscript and diagrams will be discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is requested to return original material to the author.
Format of Typescript All contributions should be in English and typed, double-spaced, with wide margins and on one side of the page only. The first page should contain the title, a list of authors' names, the affiliations and address(es) of the authors when the work was performed (new addresses should be given in a footnote). Email addresses may be included as a footnote.
Full length papers, Reviews and Short Notes should all include an Abstract and no more than six Keywords. The abstract should be submitted on a separate page and should provide a clear statement of the objective of the study and its salient conclusions in no more than 150 words. The body of the paper should start with an Introduction that is written for the general reader and not for the specialist. This introduction should describe the objectives and relevance of the work, significant prior work, as well as the major results and conclusions to be described subsequently.
The paper as a whole should provide the specialist with enough detail to permit him to evaluate and use the results. The manner of presentation of concepts, procedures, results and validation should include sufficient details to facilitate reproduction and checking. Thus multi-part papers will be considered if this is necessary for adequate exposition of important details. alternatively, reference any be made to supporting reports available to the public. Authors are urged, where possible, to include in papers features such as flow charts, algorithms, input-output details and examples, with pertinent comparisons and critical evaluations.
The paper should terminate with a Conclusions section consisting of a clear and concise review of the final results and general conclusions. Significant figures, tables and program listings in the main text should be cited if appropriate.
Illustrations Original figures, whether line-drawings or photographs, should be clearly marked on the back with the names of the authors and the figure number. Captions should be typed on a separate sheet. Line-drawings should always be carefully prepared at about twice the final size, on plain white drawing paper, and suitable for direct reproduction. Laser printer output at 300 dots per inch for a two-to-one reduction on good quality paper is acceptable. Authors should take particular care to ensure that lettering on a figure will remain clearly legible after reduction. Photographs should be enlarged sufficiently to permit clear reproduction. If words or numbers appear in photographs, two copies are required, one with the words or numbers clearly overprinted and the other without inscription. Colour figures Illustrations can be printed in colour when they are judged by the Editor to be essential to the presentation. The publisher and the author will each bear part of the extra costs involved. Further information concerning colour illustrations and the costs to the author can be obtained from the publisher.
Computer programs and output Computer programs and output, if clearly relevant to the paper, should be submitted on an original printout and will be reproduced photographically to avoid errors. Glossy prints of the original printouts are also acceptable.
Symbols Each paper should be consistent within itself as to abbreviations, symbols and units. If there is extensive use of symbols a table of nomenclature should be provided at the end of the paper.
All mathematical symbols may be either handwritten or typewritten, but no ambiguities should arise. Greek letters and unusual symbols should be identified in the margin. Distinction should be made between capital and lower case letters; between the letter O and zero, between the letter 1, the number one and prime; between k and Kappa. A vector will be printed in bold face and to indicate this the letter should be underscored with a single wavy line. The numbers identifying mathematical expressions should be placed in parentheses after the equation.
References References to published literature should be listed at the end of the paper in alphabetical order of first author, thus: Mernyk, W.M. (1965) The Elements of Input Output analysis. New York: Random House. Mullen, E. J., Chazin R., & Feldstein, D.M. (1972). Services for the newly dependent. The Social Serv. Rev., 46, 309.
The former would be mentioned in the text as (Mernyk, 1965), the latter as (Mullen et al., 1972). If there are more than two works by authors in a given year, the letter a, b, etc. follows the date in each instance. Titles of journals should be abbreviated according to Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (CASSI).
Submissions on Disk The publisher requests authors are to send the final accepted version of their article on a computer disk (3.5" HD/DD) along with the final hardcopy typescript to the editorial office. Please observe the following criteria:
(a) Do not send a disk until your paper has been accepted. (b) It is essential that the disk and hard copy match exactly. (c) Name your files using the correct software extension, eg. fig1.cdr, tb1-6.xls, text.doc, fig1a.eps, fig1.tif, etc. (d) Please label all disks with your name, journal for publication, software (Word 7, Adobe Illustrator 6.0 etc.) compression software if used, hardware used (eg. Mac, PC) and file names. (e) Save text on a separate file from any graphics.
Refereeing of Papers All papers are subject to anonymous review by experts; authors will be provided with referees' comments. Authors may suggest potential reviewers (complete with addresses, fax and telephone numbers) for their papers, but the Editor is under no obligation to follow such suggestions. Authors may also suggest names of those they wish to be excluded from the review process. To expedite reviewing, it would be helpful if authors enclose two copies of any cited papers which are still in press.
Proofs, Reprints and Copyright Proofs Corrections to proofs must be restricted to errors introduced by the printers, Authors should return their proofs promptly, by fax if the corrections are minor, to expedite publication. Reprints Authors are provided with 25 reprints free of charge. Further supplies may be ordered on the reprint order form which accompanies the proofs; reprints may be ordered with or without covers. Copyright Authors are requested to read the note on copyright published in each issue. All authors must sign the publisher's "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microform or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations, and includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any figures for which copyright exists.
