About the journal

Computers & Graphics is dedicated to the dissemination of information on the application and use of computer graphics techniques. The journal encourages articles on: 1. Research and applications of computer graphics. Emphasis will be placed on graphical man/machine interaction and the application of graphics to problem solving. 2. Tutorial papers in the area of computer graphics. 3. State-of-the-art papers on various aspects of computer graphics. 4. Information on innovative uses of various graphics devices and systems.
Computers & Graphics provides a medium for the communication of information concerning graphical man/machine interaction and the applications of computer graphics. The emphasis of the journal is on interactive computer graphics using CRT-type consoles and manual input devices such as light-pens, tablets, and function keyboards, and, within this scope, on graphical models, data structures, attention-handling languages, picture manipulation algorithms and related software. The Editor welcomes papers dealing with applications of current interest, including, but not limited to, computer-aided design, management information systems, simulation, process control, computer-aided education, pattern recognition, graphic arts, computer generated movies, medical research, architectural design, transportation systems, the design of integrated circuits, graphic operating systems, display techniques, graphic system design and evaluation (including hardware), graphic programming languages, interactive languages, man-machine communication techniques, and mathematical problem solving. Papers may be of an expository, tutorial or educational nature. Papers should be submitted to the Editor-in-chief.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Papers

Authors are requested to submit their original manuscript and figures (with four original copies of each colour figure) directly to the Editor
Jos?L Encarnacäo,
Technische Hochschule Darmstadt,
FG Graphisch-Interaktive Systeme,
Rundeturmstrasse 6,
64283 Darmstadt,
Germany.
or through members of the Editorial Advisory Board.

Papers are to be submitted in English.

Submission of a paper implies that

  • it has not been published previously
  • that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere
  • if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.
Manuscript Preparation General:

Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.

It is recognized that computer-oriented papers may have associated with them certain problems involving effective communication. As it may not always be possible, in a single paper, to present sufficient detail to facilitate reproduction and checking complementary papers will be considered dealing with details, if authors consider this advisable. Alternatively, reference may be made to supporting reports available to the public or filed with the Editor for reference by readers. Authors are urged, where possible, to include in paper features such as flow charts, algorithms, input-output details, and examples, with pertinent comparisons and critical evaluations.

Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts:
Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, 3 to 5 Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Vitae, Figure Captions and then Tables.
Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text!
The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.

Units and Symbols:

Because of the international character of the Journal, no rigid rules concerning notation or abbreviation need be observed by the authors but each paper should all be properly defined. All mathematical symbols may be either handwritten or typewritten but no ambiguities should arise, all letters should be easily identifiable. Greek letters and unusual symbols should be identified in the margin. Distinction should be made between capital and lower case letters; between the letter O and zero; between the letter l, the number one and prime; between k and kappa. A vector will be printed bold face and to indicate this the letter should be underscored with a single wavy line. The identifying mathematical expressions should be placed in parentheses after the equation.

References:

All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to references by a number in square brackets on the line (e.g. Since Bender [1]), and the full reference should be given in a numerical list at the end of the paper.
References should be given in the following form:

  • [1] Bronsvoort WF, Waarts JJ. A method for converting the surface of a generalized cylinder into a B-spline surface. Comp Graph 1992;16(2):175-178.
  • [2] Dixon RC. Spread spectrum systems. 2nd ed. New York: Wiley, 1984.
  • [3] Woodward CD, B2-splines -a local representation for cubic spline interpolation. In: Kunii TL, editor. Proceedings Computer Graphics International '87, Karuizawa, Japan 25-28 May 1987. New York: Springer, 1987. p. 197-206.

Illustrations:

All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as Figure(s) and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author?s name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet.

  • Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
  • Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
  • Colour: Colour plates will be acceptable. The number of colour plates for the journal is restricted. The Editor-in-Chief will decide on which photographs should be printed in colour.
Tables:

Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).

Computer programs:

Computer programs should be given on an original printout and will be reproduced photographically to avoid errors. Glossy prints are also acceptable. Photocopies should not be supplied in any circumstances.

Electronic Submissions: LaTeX documents

Only the final accepted manuscript can be submitted on disk, along with a paper-printed version which is identical to the file. Please label the disk with your name, and mention which word processor you have used.

LaTeX files of papers that have been accepted for publication may be sent to the Publisher by e-mail or on a diskette (3.5" or 5.25" MS-DOS). If the file is suitable, proofs will be produced without rekeying the text. The article should be encoded in ESP-LaTeX, standard LaTeX, or AMS-LaTeX (in document style "article"). The Elsevier-LaTex package, together with instructions on how to prepare a file, is available from the Publisher. This package can also be obtained through ftp://ftp.elsevier.nl/pub/styles Elsevier FTP-server, or using anonymous FTP from the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network (CTAN) at sites in the USA ftp://ftp.shsu.edu/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/supported/elsevier in the United Kingdom at ftp://ftp.tex.ac.uk/pub/../tex-archive/macros/latex209/contrib/elsevier and in Germany at ftp://ftp.dante.de/pub/tex/macros/latex/contrib/supported/elsevier

Illustrative material (original figures or high-quality glossy prints, or photographs showing a sharp contrast) should be included separately. No changes from the accepted version are permissible, without the explicit approval by the Editors. The Publisher reserves the right to decide whether to use the author's file or not. If the file is sent by e-mail, the full name of the journal should be mentioned in the subject field of the message to identify the paper. Authors should include an ASCII table (available from the Publisher) in their files to enable the detection of transmission errors. The files should be mailed to authors@elsevier.co.uk. For the purpose of further correspondence the manuscript should end with a complete mailing address, preferably including e-mail address, of at least one of the authors.

Electronic submission: Non-LaTeX

Only the final accepted manuscript can be submitted on disk, along with a paper-printed version which is identical to the file. Please label the disk with your name, and mention which word processor you have used. The word-processed text should be in single column format. Keep the layout of the text as simple as possible; in particular, do not use the word-processor's options to justify the text or to hyphenate the words.

The electronic text should be prepared in a way very similar to that of conventional manuscripts (see also Guide for Authors). The list of references, tables and figure legends should be compiled separately from the main text. Do not reserve space for the figures and tables in the text; instead, indicate their approximate locations, either directly in the electronic text or on the manuscript.

The final text should be submitted both in manuscript form and on diskette. Use standard 3.5" or 5.25" diskettes for this purpose. Both double density (DD) and high density (HD) diskettes are acceptable. It is recommended to store the main text, list of references, tables and figure legends in separate text files with clearly identifiable file names (for example, with extensions .TXT, REF, .TBL, .FIG). The format of the files depends on the word-processor used. Texts made with DEC WPS PLUS, DisplayWrite, First Choice, IBM Writing Assistant, Microsoft Word, Multimate, PFS:Write, Professional Writer, Samma Word, Sprint, Total Word, Volkswriter, Wang PC, WordMARC, WordPerfect, Wordstar, or files supplied in DCA.RFT format can be readily processed. In all other cases the preferred text format is ASCII.

Essential is that name and version of the word-processing program and the type of computer on which the text was prepared is clearly indicated on the diskette label or the accompanying checklist.

The manuscript may contain parts (e.g. formulas or complex tables) or last-minute corrections which are not included in the text on diskette; however, if this is the case then the differences with the diskette version should be clearly marked on the manuscript.

Illustrative material (original figures or high-quality glossy prints, or photographs showing a sharp contrast) should be included separately.

Keyword Instructions

Important Notice: please add three to five keywords of this list to your article. Keywords are essential for the accessibility and retrievability of your article. Keywords assigned to articles will be assembled in a keyword index which will be printed in the last issue of each volume for each journal, and in cumulative indexes. In addition, it is planned to make keywords available on Internet. To maximize the consistency with which such keywords are assigned by different authors, the following guidelines have been drawn up.

Avoid the use of abbreviations as much as possible, unless an abbreviation is so well-established that the full term is rarely used. (e.g. use "laser" instead of "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissionof Radiation", but use "computer aided design" instead of "CAD").

Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department, Elsevier, Stover Court, Bampfylde Road, Exeter, Devon, EX1 2AH, UK.

Offprints
Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.

Copyright
All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, without the author relinquishing his/her proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of a similar nature, and translations. It also includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any material for which copyright already exists.
