About the journal

Published for over thirty years, Modern China has been an indispensable source of scholarship in history and the social sciences on late-imperial, twentieth-century, and present-day China. Modern China presents scholarship based on new research or research that is devoted to new interpretations, new questions, and new answers to old questions.

Comprehensive
Spanning the full sweep of Chinese studies of six centuries, Modern China encourages scholarship that crosses over the old "premodern/modern" and "modern/contemporary" divides. In addition to research articles, Modern China presents periodic symposia on important topics in Chinese studies, critical essays on the state of Chinese studies, in-depth review articles on particular areas of scholarship, and reviews of books of unusual quality and significance.

Instructions to Authors

All substantial articles received are sent anonymously to two referees who are asked to respond within 30 days. Our target is to respond to authors within two months. Favorably evaluated articles are generally published six to twelve months after the final manuscript has been received. Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate and on an IBM-compatible floppy disk to Philip C. C. Huang, Editor, MODERN CHINA, Department of History, University of California, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1473. Submission of a manuscript implies commitment to publish in the journal. Authors submitting manuscripts to the journal should not simultaneously submit them to another journal, nor should manuscripts have been published elsewhere in substantially similar form or with substantially similar content. Authors in doubt about what constitutes prior publication should consult the editor. Articles should be typewritten double-spaced with footnotes, references, tables, and charts on separate pages. Footnotes and bibliography should follow the current journal style. Copies of the style sheet can be obtained from the editor upon request.

Authors who want to refine the use of English in their manuscripts might consider utilizing the services of SPi, a non-affiliated company that offers Professional Editing Services to authors of journal articles in the areas of science, technology, medicine or the social sciences. SPi specializes in editing and correcting English-language manuscripts written by authors with a primary language other than English. Visit http://www.prof-editing.com for more information about SPi¡¯s Professional Editing Services, pricing, and turn-around times, or to obtain a free quote or submit a manuscript for language polishing.

Please be aware that SAGE has no affiliation with SPi and makes no endorsement of the company. An author¡¯s use of SPi¡¯s services in no way guarantees that his or her submission will ultimately be accepted. Any arrangement an author enters into will be exclusively between the author and SPi, and any costs incurred are the sole responsibility of the author.
