About the journal
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is a journal concerned with global security issues, especially related to the dangers posed nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction. It was founded by many former Manhattan Project physicists in 1945 after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki brought the world into the nuclear age primarily to support the advocacy of international control of nuclear weapons and to provide a forum for the newly-empowered nuclear physicists to publish their views on nuclear policy.
The journal is published by The Educational Foundation for Nuclear Science (EFNS) which was incorporated as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization in 1949.
The journal is well known for the Doomsday clock which has appeared on the cover of each issue since 1947 and counts down the "minutes to midnight" ¡ª man's proximity to nuclear war.
Contributors to the journal have included Albert Einstein, Hans Bethe, Edward Teller, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Carl Sagan, Leo Szilard, Wernher von Braun, Al Gore, Isaac Asimov, Joseph D. Schleimer, Arthur C. Clarke, and Linus Pauling, among many others.
Instructions to Authors
The Bulletin publishes both solicited and unsolicited manuscripts. Manuscripts may be submitted by mail, e-mail, or fax. Manuscripts submitted by post will not be returned unless accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
Letters of inquiry before the submission of a manuscript are useful to determine whether a proposed article is appropriate for the Bulletin.
In most cases, articles should be no longer than 3,500 words. Although the Bulletin covers serious topics, it is not a scholarly journal. Articles should be written in a lively style and should be suitable for the non-technical reader. Footnotes should be kept to a minimum in both length and number (or avoided altogether), but if used should contain all essential information: author, title, name of publication (if a periodical), location and name of publisher (if a book), date of publication, and page references.
All acronyms should be defined, and all personal first names should be spelled out. Illustrative material may be included, but the Bulletin reserves the right to use additional or alternative illustration. All materials submitted should be accompanied by brief biographical data, including the author's current position, institutional affiliation, the names of recently published books or monographs, mailing address, and telephone/fax number. Articles should have titles, but authors' titles usually are rewritten to meet journalistic or space requirements. The Bulletin follows the Chicago Manual of Style.
Articles may be sent for review to an expert in the relevant field before acceptance. All materials accepted for publication are subject to editing for greater clarity, effectiveness of communication, and space considerations. Authors will receive edited manuscripts or galley proofs for approval. Alterations should be kept to a minimum.
Articles accepted should not be released by the author to the press or to the public before publication except as mutually agreed. Exceptions must be discussed in advance with the editor. The Bulletin maintains the copyright to all published material, and by agreeing to publication in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists the author grants the magazine unrestricted reprint rights in print and electronic form.
The editors select book reviewers and books to be reviewed. Unsolicited reviews generally are not accepted.
