About the journal

The Journal of Environmental Education

Based on recent research in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities,  The Journal of Environmental Education  details how best to present environmental issues and how to evaluate programs already in place for primary through university level and adult students. University researchers, park and recreation administrators, and teachers from the United States and abroad provide new analyses of the instruction, theory, methods, and practices of environmental communication and education in peer-reviewed articles. Reviews of the most recent books, textbooks, videos, and other educational materials by experts in the field appear regularly. Not only for teachers,  JEE is for those who administer and fund environmental education programs for schools, parks, camps, recreation centers, and businesses.

The Journal of Environmental Education invites submissions of unpublished articles about research; program evaluations; review articles; critical essays/analyses and commentaries. JEE seeks to publish material that advances the instruction, theory, methods, and practice of environmental education (EE) and communication. It publishes articles dealing with EE at all levels, from primary to college and community education. Subject areas include the sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

Instructions to Authors
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

Please note that The Journal of Environmental Education uses CrossCheck™ software to screen papers for unoriginal material. By submitting your paper to The Journal of Environmental Education you are agreeing to any necessary originality checks your paper may have to undergo during the peer review and production processes.

The Journal of Environmental Education  invites submissions of unpublished articles about research; program evaluations; review articles; critical essays/analyses and commentaries. The journal seeks to publish material that advances the instruction, theory, methods, and practice of environmental education (EE) and communication. It publishes articles dealing with EE at all levels, from primary to college and community education. Subject areas include the sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

Research Articles: A research article can be based on qualitative or quantitative paradigms and must include a 100-word abstract, 3 to 6 short key words, a problem statement, a review of relevant literature, a description of research methods and methodology results, a discussion, and a summary. In the summary, where conclusions are made, the argument must be supported by appropriate research methods and documentation. Recommendations or conjecture are encouraged, if they are identified as such.

Program Evaluations:  The journal seeks manuscripts about programs and initiatives that demonstrate innovative advances in the field. Articles should state goals and objectives, document what was done and the results, evaluate effectiveness, and describe the relevance and implications for other practitioners. These evaluations should not make unsubstantiated claims.

Reviews: Reviews cover numerous formats, including educational materials (books, films, videos, software, course designs, curricula) or reviews of research project results. The book review editor selects and approves all reviews.

Essays and Analyses: Critical essays and analyses related to policy, philosophies, theories, or historical perspectives are invited. These manuscripts should contain a strong EE component, supported by relevant sources.

Commentary: The Journal of Environmental Education  will consider commentaries on critical issues in environmental education.

The Review Process: Two consulting editors with expertise in the appropriate field will referee and blind review each manuscript. Manuscripts are sent to the executive editor who has final authority regarding acceptances and rejections. Editors may suggest revisions, in which case the manuscript will be returned with a copy of the editors' suggestions. Revised manuscripts will be subject to an additional review.

Manuscript Specifications:

•    Manuscripts must be clearly written and well organized.
•    Length may be up to 5,000 words in length, including references, tables, figures, and appendixes.
•    Use the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA; 6th edition, revised 2008) as a style reference.
•    Citations must be presented in a list of references and formatted to APA style guidelines.
•    Explanatory notes must be identified with consecutive superscripts and listed in a section titled NOTES at the end of the text.
•    Articles will be edited for clarity and readability, and changes may be made so that the text conforms to the journal's style.

Color Reproduction:
Color art will be reproduced in the online production at no additional cost to the author. Color illustrations will also be considered for the print publication; however, the author will bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Please note that color reprints can only be ordered if the print reproduction costs are paid. Print Rates: $900 for the first page of color; $450 for the next 3 pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for authors with more than 4 pages of color. Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print.

Manuscript Submission: The Journal of Environmental Education accepts submissions only through Manuscript Central —an online manuscript peer-review processing system.

•    To submit a manuscript, visit http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jenve
•    The main document that you upload in Manuscript Central must be blinded and include an abstract of no more than 100 words followed by 3 to 6 keywords.  For suggested keywords, click here .  Choose 3 to 6 terms that best classify your subject (or create your own).
•    To find the status of any manuscript that you've submitted through Manuscript Central, visit the journal's site: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jenve , Log In, select Author Center, look at the step-wise list under My Manuscripts, and click on the items until you find your manuscript's description and status. (For help, click Get Help Now.)
•    NOTE: Be sure to upload all tables, figures, appendixes, and equations as separate files in Manuscript Central.  Manuscript Central will prompt you to enter the text and relevant information of your cover letter.
•    Our editorial board evaluates each manuscript in a blinded peer-review process, which takes approximately 3 to 4 months, not including any times of revision by the author.
