Instructions to Authors
The Journal of Urban Economics provides a focal point for the publication of research papers in the rapidly expanding filed of urban economics. It publishes papers of great scholarly merit on a wide range of topics and employing a wide range of approaches to urban economics. The journal welcomes papers that are theoretical or empirical, positive or normative. Although the journal is not intended to be mutlidisciplinary, papers by noneconomists are welcome if they are of interest to economists. Brief Notes are also published if they live within the purview of the journal and if they contain new information, comment on published work, or contain new theoretical suggestions.
Manuscripts should be prepared according to the following style rules (deviation from these rules causes publication delays).
Submission of Manuscripts. Manuscripts must be written in English and should be submitted in triplicate, including three sets of good-quality figures, to:
Professor Jan K. Brueckner Editor, Journal of Urban Economics Department of Economics University of California, Irvine 3151 Social Science Plaza Irvine, CA 92697 USA Telephone: (949) 824-0083
There are no submission fees or page charges.
Original papers only will be considered. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been and will not be nor is currently submitted elsewhere, and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out; further, that any person cited as a source of personal communications has approved such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editor's discretion. Articles and any other material published in the Journal of Urban Economics represent the opinions of the author(s) and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editor(s) and the Publisher.
Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if it is accepted for publication, copyright in the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned exclusively to the Publisher. The Copyright Transfer Agreement should be signed by the appropriate person(s).
Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions to reprint previously published figures, tables, and other material.
Electronic Transmission of Accepted Manuscripts. Authors are requested to transmit the text and art of the manuscript in electronic form, via either computer disk, e-mail, or FTP (ftp.elsevier.com, with username anon and password essd4acc), after all revisions have been incorporated and the manuscript has been accepted for publication. Submission as an e-mail attachment is acceptable provided that all files are included in a single archive the size of which does not exceed 2 megabytes (jue@elsevier.com). Manuscripts prepared using TeX or LaTeX are welcome; however, LaTeX(2e) is strongly preferred. The Elsevier LaTeX package (including detailed instructions for LaTeX preparation) is available at http://www.elsevier.com/locate/latex. Note that the use of other specialized versions of TeX or extensive use of custom macros may necessitate conventional typesetting from the hard-copy manuscript. Hard-copy printouts of the manuscript and art must also be supplied. The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and authors must read the proofs carefully.
Preparation of Manuscript Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout on one side of 8.5 ' 11-inch or A4 white paper. Pages should be numbered consecutively and organized as follows:
The Title Page (p. 1) should contain the article title, authors' names and complete affiliations, footnotes to the title, a running title of fewer than 35 characters, and the address for manuscript correspondence (including e-mail address and telephone and fax numbers).
TheAbstract (p. 2) must be a single paragraph that summarizes the main findings of the paper in fewer than 150 words. After the abstract a list of up to 10 keywords that will be useful for indexing or searching should be included.
References should be cited in the text by Arabic numerals in brackets, e.g., [2, 16]. Journal titles should be spelled out in full. Personal communications should be cited as such in the text and should not be included in the reference list. Please note the following examples:
[1] D. Feenberg, E.S. Mills, Measuring the Benefits of Water Pollution Abatement, Academic Press, New York. [2] J. Henkel, K. Stahl, U. Waltz, Coalition building in a spatial economy, Journal of Urban Economics 47 (2000) 136- 163. [3] G. Peterson, T. Mueller, Regional impact of federal tax and spending policies, in: E. Arnold (Ed.), Alternatives to Confrontation, Heath, Lexington, MA, 1980, pp. 281-301.
Figures should be in a finished form suitable for publication. Number figures consecutively with Arabic numerals, and indicate the top and the authors on the back of each figure. Lettering on drawings should be professional quality or generated by high-resolution computer graphics and must be large enough to withstand appropriate reduction for publication.
Color Figures. Illustrations in color can be accepted only if the authors defray the cost. Submit color illustrations as original photographs, high-quality computer prints, or transparencies, close to the size expected in publication, or as 35-mm slides. Polaroid color prints are not suitable. If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable color figures, then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in color on the Web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether these illustrations are reproduced in color in the printed version. For color reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork. Please note: Because of technical complications that can arise in converting color figures to "gray scale" (for the printed version should you not opt for color in print), please submit in addition usable black-and-white prints corresponding to all the color illustrations.
Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Type each table double-spaced on a separate page, with a short descriptive title typed directly above and with essential footnotes below. Authors should submit complex tables as camera-ready copy.
Preparation of Supplementary Material. Elsevier now accepts electronic supplementary material to support and enhance your scientific research. Supplementary files offer additional possibilities for publishing supporting applications, movies, animation sequences, high-resolution images, background datasets, sound clips, and more. Supplementary files supplied will be published online alongside the electronic version of your article in Elsevier Web products, including ScienceDirect ( http://www.sciencedirect.com). To ensure that your submitted material is directly usable, please provide the data in one of our recommended file formats. Authors should submit the material in electronic format together with the article and supply a concise and descriptive caption for each file. Please note, however, that supplementary material will not appear in the printed journal. Files can be stored on 3?-inch diskette, ZIP disk, or CD (either MS-DOS or Macintosh). For more detailed instructions, please visit our Author Gateway at http://authors.elsevier.com, click on "Artwork instructions," and then click on "Multimedia files."
Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. To avoid delay in publication, only necessary changes should be made, and proofs should be returned promptly. Authors will be charged for alterations that exceed 10% of the total cost of composition.
Author Inquiries For inquiries relating to the submission of articles (including electronic submission where a available) please visit the Elsevier Author Gateway at http://authors.elsevier.com. The Author Gateway also provides the facility to track accepted articles and set up e-mail alerts to inform you of when an article's status has changed, as well as detailed artwork guidelines, copyright information, frequently asked questions, and more. Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided after registration of an article for publication.
