About the journal
|
The Bulletin of Mathematical Biology is devoted to research at the junction of computational, theoretical and experimental biology. With its high scientific standards and stress on clear exposition, the Bulletin is of interest to theorists and experimentalists alike. In addition to original research papers and survey articles, the Bulletin publishes extended book reviews. Every article has a biological message.
Research Areas Include:
Developmental Biology Ecology Epidemiology Immunology Molecular Biology Morphology Neurobiology Pharmacology Physiology Population Biology Sequence Comparison
The Bulletin of Mathematical Biology is the official publication of the Society for Mathematical Biology. Editor: Philip K. Maini, Centre for Mathematical Biology, Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK

The Bulletin of Mathematical Biology aims to be of major interest to theorists and experimental biologists alike. An ideal article would be a symbiotic combination of theory and experiment. Also very welcome are papers that provide documentation of a purely theoretical advance together with a clear exposition of how this advance furthers biological understanding.
The following instructions are an attempt to improve communication between theoretical and experimental biologists. (a) Every abstract should have a brief statement giving the biological significance of the paper. (b) An introduction should state the background of the problem in general terms, without equations. If the paper is particularly theoretical, there should be two introductions. A section headed Introduction: general would have the format just described. In addition, there could be a Introduction: theoretical to explain the theoretical background in a fuller form than that sketched in the biological introduction. (c) There should be a summary and conclusions section, which summarizes in general terms the results of the research described in the paper. Generally this should be done without equations and with explanatory figures and graphs. If the paper is particularly theoretical, the final section could be split into two, analogous to the introduction.
SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPT. Please submit an original and three copies to the Editor, Philip Maini. Please submit with your manuscript the names and contact details for six possible referees. Electronic submission is possible. Contact the editor or (preferably) his assistant Sara Jolliffe (bmb@maths.ox.ac.uk).
Form of Manuscript (a) Authors who are not fluent in English should enlist the help of an expert so that manuscripts are written clearly and idiomatically. (b) All pages should be numbered consecutively. (c) Page 1 should contain: the article title; author(s) name(s); and complete affiliation(s). (d) Page 2 should contain: a proposed running head (abbreviated form of title of less than 35 characters); the name and mailing address of the author to whom proofs should be sent; an email, contact, address and fax number. Please indicate if the author(s) wish to submit the final manuscript electronically in TeX or LaTeX (see below). (e) Unless otherwise indicated on page 2, the original manuscript and diagrams will be discarded after publication.
Electronic Format Authors wishing to submit their final manuscript in an electronic format may prepare their manuscripts with any commercial word processor or in any TeX, LaTeX format, including AMS-TeX and AMS-LaTeX are welcome. However authors are encouraged to use LaTeX2e and the template provided. (Click here to download the LaTeX2e class file.) Electronic files can be sent either on floppy disk (clearly labelled with the file format, the author name, address, email), by email attachment, or by ftp (contact the publisher for instructions). Authors should also provide a printed version or a PostScript file.
References References should be listed alphabetically at the end of the paper. They should be styled and punctuated according to the following examples:

(Eds), Diversity and Pattern in Plant Communities, SPB Academic Publishing, The Hague, pp. 419?421.
Celler, B. G (1977). An experimental and mathematical analysis of the effects of vagal stimulation on the heart period of the dog, PhD thesis, University of South Wales, Sydney, Australia.
Citations in the text can be of the form Smith (1978)or (Smith, 1978) and Jones et al. (1994) or (Jones et al., 1994) for three or more authors.
Figures All illustrations are to be considered as figures. Figures can be submitted either as original hard copy or as a PostScript file. If submitted as hard copy, drawings should be prepared in a professional manner and each figure should be labelled with the author(s) names and figure number. In some cases, it may be convenient to make a drawing two or three times larger than it is to appear in the journal.
Photographs Photographs should be high-quality, glossy prints and should be supplied at approximately the same size as they are to appear in the journal. Colour is permissible, but the extra printing costs will be charged to the author.
Proofs Page proofs will be sent to the author, with an offprint order form. Authors will be charged for alterations in excess of 10% of the cost of composition.
Copyright Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if it is accepted for publication, copyright in the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, will be assigned exclusively to the Society for Mathematical Biology. The Copyright Transfer Agreement, which may be copied from the pages of the journal, or found on the journal home page, should be signed by the appropriate person(s) and should accompany the original submission of a manuscript to the journal. The transfer of copyright does not take place until the manuscript is accepted for publication.
Offprints The Publisher will supply 25 offprints of each paper. Further offprints may be ordered at extra cost; the offprint order form will be sent with the proofs.
Book Reviews Books for review, or suggestions for such books, should be sent to the Book Review Editor
