About the journal
Annals of Clinical and Laboratory Science
The Association's journal, the Annals of Clinical and Laboratory Science, was founded in 1971. The Annals of Clinical and Laboratory Science welcomes manuscripts that report original research in clinical science, including pathology, clinical biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, cytogenetics, immunology, microbiology, hematology, transfusion medicine, organ transplantation, therapeutics, toxicology, and informatics. Manuscripts that report clinically relevant research in experimental animals or in vitro models are welcome, as well as reviews of topics that pertain to clinical diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy, emphasizing new laboratory procedures and technological or therapeutic advances. Brief manuscripts are published as "Communications," "Commentaries," or "Editorials."
The Annals of Clinical & Laboratory Science is made available for abstracting and indexing in print and/or electronic form in Chemical Abstracts, Current Contents/Clinical Medicine, Current Contents/Life Sciences, Current Awareness in Biological Sciences/BIOBASW, Excerpta Medica/EMBASE, Index Medicus/MEDLINE, PubMed, and Science Citation Index. The Editor of the Annals of Clinical & Laboratory Science is a member of the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) [http://www.wame.org].
Instructions to Authors
Submission of the text as electronic files is important, since most manuscripts are reviewed and edited in electronic form. Electronic files facilitate the distribution of manuscripts to reviewers, minimize transcriptional errors, and speed the production of camera-ready copy. Manuscripts may be sent to the Editor, F. William Sunderman, Jr., M.D., by (a) mail to Post Office Box 1287, Middlebury, VT 05753, USA; (b) express delivery service to 270 Barnes Road, Whiting, VT 05778, USA, noting the telephone number (1-802-462-2507); (c) fax to 1-802-462-2673; or (d) e-mail to ClinSci@sover.net, as a Microsoft Word attachment.
Typescript
Typed materials (abstract, text, acknowledgments, literature cited, tables, figure legends, etc.) should be submitted in English as word-processing files, using Microsoft Word (Mac or PC version) on a 3.5-inch high-density diskette or as an e-mail attachment. In addition, one printed copy (which exactly corresponds to the word-processing files) should be sent by mail or fine-resolution fax, observing the following specifications: standard-sized paper, Times and Symbol fonts (12 point), 1-inch margins, unjustified, double-spaced, without any page-breaks between sections, excepting tables, which should each begin on a separate page.
Figures
Charts and line drawings should be submitted as graphic files, using Excel, DeltaGraph, SigmaPlot, or KaleidoGraph, or as TIFF files using Adobe PageMaker or PhotoShop. Geneva font is preferred. Three printed copies of each chart or line drawing should be provided, with images adjusted to the width of one column (3.125 inch) or two columns (6.5 inch). Digital images are preferred to photographs. Photographs should be sent by mail or express delivery as three sets of unscreened, unmounted, glossy photoprints, with images adjusted to the width of one or two columns (3.125 or 6.5 inch). The maximum image size is 7 inch (vertical) x 6.5 inch (horizontal). Each photoprint is labeled (in pencil) on the back with the figure number, first author, and an arrow towards the top. Color photographs may be used, but are published only at the authors' expense.
Cover Letter
A cover letter is required for all manuscripts. When the manuscript is submitted by fax or e-mail, the original copy of the cover letter, signed by all authors, should be sent to the Editor by regular mail. The cover letter includes (a) the corresponding author's postal address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address; (b) a copyright assignment statement, as specified below; (c) the authors' responsibility statement, as specified below; (d) human or animal experimentation statements, if applicable; (e) conflict of interest statements, if applicable; and (f) potential reviewers.
Copyright Assignment Statement
"The authors undersigned hereby assign copyright ownership of this article, including rights to reproduce it in all forms and media, to the Association of Clinical Scientists, provided the article is published in the Annals of Clinical and Laboratory Science," OR "Copyright ownership of this article cannot be assigned, since one of the authors undersigned was employed by the U.S. federal government when the study was performed or prepared for publication."
Authors' Responsibility Statement
"The authors undersigned certify that each author participated sufficiently in the study conception or design, data analysis or interpretation, and drafting or revision of the manuscript, so that each author can take responsibility for the validity and objectivity of the entire study. Each author has approved the final version of the manuscript. Neither this manuscript nor one with similar content has been published or is being considered for publication in any language, except as an abstract or thesis. If requested, the authors agree to disclose to the Editor the original data upon which the results are based."
Human or Animal Experimentation
If the research involves humans or animals, the cover letter must certify that the study was approved by the appropriate institutional review board. The study protocol should be described in the methods and materials section, including how informed consent was obtained from human subjects
Conflict of Interest
An author with a financial interest in, or an indebtedness to, any commercial organization (e.g., employment, research grant, travel support, consultation fees, honoraria, or equipment donation) is obliged to disclose such relationship in the cover letter and the acknowledgments section, if the manuscript concerns products or services provided by that organization or its competitors.
Proposed Reviewers
In the cover letter, the authors may propose for the Editor's consideration three potential reviewers who are unbiased and well-qualified, listing their full names, academic titles or institutional appointments, complete postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail addresses. The final selection of reviewers is the Editor's responsibility.
Structure and Content
The first page begins with (a) the title of the article; (b) full names and institutional affiliations of all authors; (c) five to eight keywords; and (d) a running title with no more than 45 characters and spaces. If an author's affiliation has changed since the work was finished, the new affiliation is given in a footnote. An abstract of about 200 words is given in a full-length manuscript, concisely summarizing the goals, procedures, results, and conclusions. An abstract of about 125 words is generally provided in a "Communication" or "Commentary," but not in an "Editorial." Research reports are structured as follows: abstract, introduction, methods and materials, results, discussion, acknowledgments, literature cited, tables, figure legends, and figures. Reviews are structured according to the author's discretion.
Style
The text should follow the current edition of the American Medical Association's Style Manual. Arabic numbers are used throughout. Italics are not employed for emphasis. Footnotes to the text are incorporated parenthetically within the text. Footnotes to tables are typed on the last page of the table to which they apply, and are designated in order of appearance by superscript lowercase letters. Figure legends and table captions are concise and descriptive. Legends for photomicrographs should specify the magnification and stain. Figures, tables, or quotations from other sources must be acknowledged and permission to reprint the material must be obtained in writing from the original publisher.
Abbreviations
Jargon and excessive abbreviations should be avoided. Some common abbreviations include m (meter), cm (centimeter), mm (millimeter), µm (micrometer), nm (nanometer), kg (kilogram), g (gram), mg (milligram), µm (microgram), ng (nanogram), l (liter), dl (deciliter), ml (milliliter), µl (microliter), nl (nanoliter), mol (mole), M (molar), mM (millimolar), µM (micromolar), °C (Celsius), sec (seconds), min (minutes), hr (hours), cpm (counts per min), dpm (disintegrations per min), Ci (Curie), kDa (kiloDalton), g (acceleration of gravity), sc (subcutaneous), im (intramuscular), ip (intraperitoneal), iv (intravenous), po (oral), LD50 (median lethal dose), SD (standard deviation), SE (standard error), CV (coefficient of variation), % (percent), and ANOVA (analysis of variance). Periods are not used after abbreviations. When any uncommon abbreviation is used for the first time, the abbreviation is placed in parentheses after the word or phrase for which it stands.
Nomenclature and Data
Nomenclature should be consistent and comply with the Rules of Nomenclature established by IUPAC, IUB, IFCC, and CAS. For biological names, the genus and species are both italicized and the genus is capitalized. Generic names of drugs are used unless trade names are directly relevant. Compositions of solutions and buffers should specify the concentrations of the various ingredients. Data should not be duplicated in tables and figures. Quantitative data are presented so that readers can judge their statistical significance. Statistical methods are documented by references.
References
In text, references are identified numerically in brackets in order of citation. Under literature cited, references are listed in numerical sequence and include all authors, as follows:
1. Abbi R, Daum F, Kahn E. Ontogeny of renal dysplasia in Ivemark syndrome. Ann Clin Lab Sci 1999;29:9-17. 2. Sunderman FW Jr . Teratogenicity and embryotoxicity of metals. In: General and Applied Toxicology, 2nd ed, (Ballantyne B, Marrs T, Syversen T, Eds), Macmillan, London, 1999; vol 2, pp 1203-1213.
Checking bibliographic citations for accuracy is the authors' responsibility. For journal abbreviations, authors may refer to Chemical Abstracts Source Index 1985. Citing personal communications, unpublished data, or manuscripts "in preparation" or "submitted for publication" as numbered references is unacceptable. If necessary, such material may be noted in parentheses at the appropriate place in the text.
Reprints and Charges
Manuscripts are accepted with an understanding that the authors will purchase at least 100 reprints. Additional reprints may be ordered in multiples of 100. The reprint order form, sent to the corresponding author with the proofs, must be returned by mail or fax with the corrected proofs. The costs of color photographs and author's modifications of the proofs are charged to the author. There are no manuscript submission fees or journal page charges.
