About the journal
Progress in Biophysics & Molecular Biology

Progress in Biophysics & Molecular Biology covers the ground between the physical and biological sciences. It indicates to the physicist the great variety of unsolved problems awaiting attention in the biological sciences. The biologist and biochemist will find that this journal presents new and stimulating ideas on structural and functional problems of the living organism. This journal will be of particular interest to biophysicists, biologists, biochemists and molecular biologists.

Instructions to Authors
Style. The purpose of the series is to present invited, informative and critical reviews of recent advances in different aspects of Biophysics and Molecular Biology. The Editors welcome suggestions of topics and potential authors. As the scope of Progress in Biophysics & Molecular Biology is wide and of interest to scientists in many disciplines, authors should treat their subject matter in a manner that is authoritative yet also easily comprehensible to those who are not experts in the field. Whilst the aim of the journal is primarily to publish substantial articles reviewing progress over an extensive field, articles covering recent advances on more limited topics are also welcome.
Manuscript Submission. One original and two additional copies of the manuscript and illustrations should be submitted to one of the Editors in double-spaced typing with ample margins. Formulae should be carefully typed in the text. Authors should designate in the text where tables and figures should appear, but the tables and figures should be collected after the references. A disk should be supplied with the manuscript; the disk file should exactly match the printed manuscript. Disks should preferably be IBM-PC compatible, using WordPerfect or Microsoft Word word-processing programmes or alternatively ASCII text files in IBM-PC/MS-DOS format, although other systems (e.g. Macintosh) are acceptable. Please label the disk with your name, the software and hardware used, the journal title and the name of the file to be processed.
Title Page. The title page should contain the article title, authors and their affiliations; the abbreviated form of the title not exceeding 50 characters for use as a running headline; and the name, full mailing address, fax number and e-mail address (where appropriate) of the corresponding author.
Abstract. An abstract (250 word maximum) should follow on a separate page. The abstract should succinctly summarise the content, scope and applications of the review. Up to five relevant keywords should be incorporated below the abstract.
Section Headings. Each article should be divided into sections (labelled with Roman numerals e.g. I, II, III, IV etc) and, if required, sub-sections (labelled with Arabic numerals e.g. 1, 2 ,3 etc) under separate headings. A final section should state the main conclusions and, if applicable, future perspectives.
Figures. Graphs and drawn diagrams should be larger than they will appear in print and should be prepared with care. Photographs should be glossy prints of good contrast and larger than they will occur in the text. It is most important that a brief caption be provided for each diagram on a separate sheet. Where possible, SI units should be employed, but if non-metric units are used the metric equivalents must also be given, or at least the dimensionally correct conversion factors as a footnote. Where the ordinates of a graph are not described in metric units this should be remedied. Authors who wish to submit colour figures will be allowed a maximum of two colour figures free of charge at the discretion of the Editors. Additional colour figures will be charged at standard Elsevier rates.
References. References should be made in the text under the name of the author and year, e.g. (Margolis, 1994) and listed alphabetically at the end.
References should give the article title and journal name in full and should adhere to the following style:
Journal article Paivio, A., Jansen, B., Becker, L. J., 1975. Comparisons through the mind's eye. Cognition 37(2), 635-647.

Abbreviations and Symbols. Standard abbreviations may be used but on the first mention full titles or terms must be given with abbreviations in parentheses. Symbols should conform to accepted standards. The use of the same symbol for more than one purpose is confusing and should be avoided.
Proofs. Authors are requested to return the corrected page proofs together with the original typescript to the Publisher by the date requested.
Contracts. Authors will be issued with a contract by the Publisher which will indicate the extent of the manuscript and the submission date as agreed with the Editor. A fee will be paid to the authors on publication of their article together with 25 reprints.
If the article is available on disk, this should be supplied with the manuscript. Please ensure that the disk file exactly matches the accompanying printout.
