About the journal

Arctic Anthropology, founded in 1962 by Chester S. Chard, is an international journal devoted to the study of Old and New World northern cultures and peoples. Archaeology, ethnology, physical anthropology, and related disciplines are represented, with emphasis on: studies of specific cultures of the arctic, subarctic and contiguous regions of the world; the peopling of the New World, and relationships between New World and Eurasian cultures of the circumpolar zone; contemporary problems and culture change among northern peoples, new directions in interdisciplinary northern research.

Instructions to Authors

It is the journal¡¯s policy that each submitted manuscript be reviewed by three persons qualified to judge its merits. Criteria of particular importance are originality, scholarly significance, clarity, and theoretical and methodological soundness. A manuscript should stand alone in terms of problem delineation, review of prior relevant research, description or presentation of data (including adequate illustrations), interpretation, and literature citation.

For the text of an article, word processing files (Microsoft Word is preferred though not required) and four (4) printouts of each manuscript should be submitted to the Editorial Office. Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout, including references, tables, and end notes.

References to literature should be indicated throughout the text with page numbers included (American Anthropologist style). All references cited in the text (and only those references) will be included in the bibliography. In the bibliography, use complete names of authors rather than initials whenever possible.

Illustrations: submit photocopies of all proposed illustrations for purposes of initial manuscript evaluation. When an article is accepted for publication, please send all illustrations to the address below. For photographs, please send original black & white glossy prints, either 5x7" or 8-1/2x11", not files of scanned images. For maps, graphs, or diagrams, our preference is for a black & white print without any shading, at the likely final size at which it will appear in the journal. Captions should not be part of an illustration, but rather typed separately. Please read the publisher¡¯s Artwork Preparation Guidelines.

The journal¡¯s Style Sheet is published in Volume 27, Number 1, 1990. Contributors are strongly urged to consult the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style before submitting a final manuscript.
