About the journal
To realize sustainable society, it is necessary to seek ways for humans to harmoniously coexist with animals, both wild and domestic. Hokkaido University, Japan has achieved quality researches in veterinary sciences since 1880. Hokkaido University Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine has been publishing an excellent journal titled "Japanese Journal of Veterinary Research" since 1953, which is an English-written official publication. The quarterly-published Journal focuses on Veterinary Science and Medicine.
The Journal is available for free of charge through the database called, "Hokkaido University Collection of Scholarly and Academic Papers (HUSCAP)." Also, the Journal as a booklet is released to major research organizations with which Hokkaido University has strong relationships. It is desired that a subscription request is made directly to the publisher on an exchange basis if possible.
Instructions to Authors

1. Scope
Full Papers, Notes and Review Articles principally related to veterinary science that are unpublished
or not being considered for publication elsewhere are accepted. Manuscripts are selected for
publication according to an editorial assessment of their suitability and reports from referees. Papers
will be rejected if ethics standards for the care and use of animals have not been adhered to. All animal
experiments must have been approved by the author’s affiliated institution through evaluation by an
appropriate committee.
2. Submission of manuscript
Manuscripts should be submitted to the Editorial Office by one of the following two methods. Each
manuscript must be accompanied by a cover letter outlining the basic findings of the paper and their
significance.
1) Two copies of typescript and two original sets of figures (line drawings and photographs) should
be sent to the Editorial Office.
2) A CD-ROM including a PDF file of the text, tables, and figures should be sent to the Editorial
Office. Alternatively, a PDF file attached to E-mail should be sent to the Editorial Office by
E-mail (vet@lib.hokudai.ac.jp).
For every manuscript accepted for publication, original electronic files of the final version of the
manuscript should be sent to the Editorial Office. For the type of electronic file, follow the
instructions of the Editorial Office.
3. Format of manuscripts
The manuscript should be typed at 24 lines per page on size A4 (215 × 280 mm) paper with margins
of about 25 mm on all sides.
4. Preparation of manuscripts
1) On the first line of the first page of each manuscript, one of the following categories should be
noted as the field of the paper : Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology,
Microbiology, Infectious diseases, Parasitology, Laboratory Animal Science and Medicine,
Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pathology, Theriogenology, Molecular Medicine, Public Health,
Radiation Biology, Toxicology, Wildlife Biology, Veterinary Hygiene or Production Medecine.
The first page should also indicate whether it is a Full Paper, Note or Review Article. The first
page should include the title (which should begin with a capital letter), authors’ full names,
affiliations, and the address(es) with the postal code of the institution(s) in which the work was
done, as well as the name, address, fax number and e-mail address of the corresponding author.
The first page should also contain a running head not exceeding 40 letters.
2) The second page of each Full Paper and Review Article should contain an abstract (250 words or
less) and key words (5 or fewer, in alphabetical order). The second page of each Note should
contain an abstract (120 words or less) and key words (3 or fewer, in alphabetical order).
3) The body of the manuscript on and after the third page of a Full Paper should in principle be
divided into the following sections: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion,
Acknowledgements, and References. For a Note, such captions as Introduction, Materials and
Methods, and Results should not be used, and References should follow the text.
4) Proper nouns should begin with a capital letter. The scientific names of animals, plants and
microorganisms must be italicized.
5) Each abbreviation, except those listed in Item 6, should be written in parentheses after the full
word(s) at its first appearance in the manuscript.
6) In the manuscript, Arabic numbers should be used for quantities. As a rule, units and
abbreviations should conform to the following examples: M, mM, μM, %, m, cm, mm, μm, nm,
pm, cm2, l, ml, μl, nl, fl, kg, g, mg, μg, ng, pg, hr, min, sec, msec, Hz, Bq, μBq, mBq, kBq, cpm,
dpm, ppm, °C, ∫, Kj, lux, CPE, LD, T, xg.
7) The list of References should be arranged in alphabetical order by authors' surnames and
numbered consecutively. The names of the journals should be abbreviated according to PubMed,
or should be spelled out for unlisted journals. In the text, references should be cited with
superscript numbers. The author is responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the
references.

8) In tables, no vertical line is used and each term or phrase should begin with a capital letter. Any
explanation essential to the understanding of the table should be given as a footnote at the bottom of
the table. References to the footnotes should be designated by superscript letters in the order a, b, c.
9) Data figures should be drawn in black ink on white, size A4 paper. Any signs (scales, arrows,
etc.) should be drawn directly on photographs. The number of the figure (e.g. Fig. 2) and the first
author’s name should be written.
10) Figure titles and legends must be typewritten on separate sheets.
5. Limitation of the number of pages
The length of papers, including tables, figures and any other appendices, should not exceed 10 printed
pages for a Full Paper or Review Article, and 6 printed pages for a Note.
6. Publication fee
For publication, authors will be charged ¥10,000 for a Full Paper or Review Article not exceeding 10
printed pages, and ¥10,000 for a Note not exceeding 6 printed pages. Authors will be charged extra
fees for the following:
1) A charge for English language revision when deemed necessary by the Editorial Board.
2) Type-setting and printing of any portion of the text exceeding the length prescribed in Item 5. (¥5,000
per 1 printed page).
3) Color printing.
4) Charges for reprints (only when required by authors).

The copyright of articles which appear in The Japanese Journal of Veterinary Research is held by the
Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine, Hokkaido University.
