About the journal

Environmental Entomology is published in February, April, June, August, October, and December. Contributors report on

the interaction of insects with the biological, chemical, and physical aspects of their environment. Articles are divided into

categories by subject matter: physiological and chemical ecology (abiotic effects, pheromones, effects of miscellaneous

pollutants), community/ecosystem ecology (trophic-level studies, associations), population ecology (mating, reproduction,

movement, behavior, parasitism, predation, microbial ecology, insect¨Cplant relations), pest management and sampling

(integrated pest management, sampling, distribution), and biological control (mass release, microbial control, augmentation,

classical biological control).

Instructions to Authors

All manuscripts are reviewed by scientists qualified to judge the validity of the research. Acceptance or rejection, however,

is the decision of the subject editor. Acceptance of manuscripts is based solely on their scientific merit. Appeal of a rejected

manuscript should be made to the Editorial Board, via the Director of Publications. Accepted manuscripts are published

approximately in the order they are received.

In addition to research papers, Environmental Entomology publishes Letters to the Editor, interpretive articles in a Forum

section, Book Reviews, and articles that describe new entomological techniques. The same guidelines apply to these as to

research articles.

For more detailed instructions concerning the preparation and submission of manuscripts, consult the Publishing with ESA

Style Guide published on our web site, http://www.entsoc.org.

Manuscript Preparation. Type all manuscripts double-spaced, with 1-inch margins. Number pages consecutively,

beginning with the title page. Begin each of the following on a separate page and arrange in the following order: title page,

abstract and key words (three to six words), text, acknowledgments, references cited, footnotes, tables, and figure legends.

Submit an original and two copies of the manuscript and artwork to:

Environmental Entomology

Entomological Society of America

9301 Annapolis Road

Lanham, MD 20706

Do not submit a new manuscript directly to the subject editor.

Title Page. In the upper right corner, type the complete name, address, and telephone number, fax number, and email

of the author who is to receive and approve page proofs. In the upper left corner, type Environmental Entomology, the section

of the journal in which the manuscript should appear, and the running head. Use a brief and informative title that includes

order and family names in parentheses. Four lines beneath the title, type in capital letters the complete names of all authors.

Four lines beneath the authors¡¯ names, type the department, institution, city, state, zip code, and country (other than the United

States) of the institution where the research was done. Use numbered footnotes for authors not affiliated with the research

institution, and give their addresses or affiliations on the footnote page.

Abstract. Abstract should be an informative digest of the significant contents and the main conclusions of the research.

References Cited. Citations in the text should be by last name of the author and date and refer to a reference listed

alphabetically by author in References Cited. For further formatting instructions, see our Publishing with ESA Style Guide

located on our Web site (http://www.entsoc.org).

Tables. Keep tables to a minimum. Type all parts of each table double-spaced, with each table starting a new page.

Illustrations. At the time of manuscript submission, submit original drawings. Photographs must be on glossy paper.

Separate parts of the same figure must be mounted together on illustration board and arranged to use space efficiently. Authors

should indicate a preference for one- or two-column reproduction, and they are asked to account for the length of the caption

and for proportionated reduction or enlargement in the choice of lettering size, type style, and the format of the artwork itself.

Final (reduced) lettering size should be 10 points. Authors are urged to contact the staff of the publications office with

questions concerning the preparation of artwork. Each piece of artwork should be labeled with the corresponding author¡¯s

name, address, and telephone number; an abbreviated title of the paper; and the name of the journal to which the article has

been submitted. Original artwork for rejected papers is returned by the subject editor; all other artwork is returned to the

corresponding author upon request.

Style Conventions. When first mentioned, a plant or animal should include the full scientific name and the author of the

zoological name unabbreviated¡ª except for Linnaeus (L.) and Fabricius (F.). Use only common names approved by the

Entomological Society of America (Common Names of Insects & Related Organisms 1997). Otherwise, the manuscript

should conform to the guidelines established by the latest edition of the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual.

Proofs and Reprints. Page proofs and reprint order forms are sent to authors after manuscripts are typeset. All changes

in proof, except for printer and editorial errors and answers to copy editor queries addressing style or format, will be charged

to the author.

Editorial Charges. Editorial review charges are assessed on all accepted manuscripts to cover some of the expenses of

publishing. Contact the publications office at (301) 731-4535 or the ESA web site (http://www.entsoc.org) for current rates.

Reprints (printed and electronic) are ordered at the time page proofs are returned to ESA; see the reprint order form for rates.

Author alterations are billed at $6 per alteration (alterations to figures are billed at a higher rate). Member authors who are

retired and not affiliated with any institution can publish five pages gratis each year. Member authors who are employed

but who have no grants or funds for publication can request a partial waiver of editorial charges. Such requests must be made

at the time of manuscript submission. For a full explanation, see our publications policies on the ESA web site (http://www.entsoc.org).

THIS PUBLICATION IS PRINTED ON ACID-FREE, RECYCLED PAPER.
