About the journal

This international journal is dedicated to the rapid publication of high quality papers on the important subjects of wear and friction, together with papers on closely related aspects of lubrication, contact phenomena or surface characterization. The scope includes all aspects of physics, chemistry, materials science and mechanical engineering which relate directly to the subjects of wear and friction; papers may approach the subject from a fundamental or technological viewpoint. Thorough refereeing of all papers, in accordance with normal procedures for international journals in science and engineering, ensures that Wear is an international forum of high quality for multidisciplinary communications on topics which include: Papers concerned with these fields may be submitted. Facilities also exist for the prompt publication of short Research Reports and Letters subject to editorial approval.
Instructions to Authors
Submission of papers Authors should submit THREE copies of their manuscripts(complete in all respects) by mail or courier to the Editor-in-Chief whose address is below. For the final version, in addition to the original and two copies, authors must submit an electronic version of their manuscript on disk. The Editors cannot accept papers submitted by e-mail.
The Editor-in-Chief Professor I.M. Hutchings University of Cambridge Institute for Manufacturing Mill Lane Cambridge CB2 1RX UK
Contributions are considered on the understanding that the authors have obtained the necessary authority for publication. Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher. A statement to this effect should be included in the covering letter which accompanies the manuscript. Upon acceptance of an article by the journal, the author(s) will be asked to transfer the copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.
Authors are reminded that delays in publication may occur if the instructions for submission and manuscript preparation are not closely followed.
Types of contributions The following types of manuscripts on all topics within the scope of the journal (see separate list) are welcomed:
- Full-length papers containing original research work.
- Short Communications giving a complete description of a limited investigation. They should be as completely documented, both by reference to the literature and by description of the experimental procedures employed, as a full-length paper. Typically a Short Communication will contain no more than four or five figures (graphs or sets of images).
- Reviews (but prospective authors should obtain preliminary approval of the Editor-in-Chief before preparing such a paper).
Preparation of manuscripts Manuscripts should be printed in double spacing with a wide margin on the left. All pages should be numbered. The title of the paper should be concise but informative. This should be followed by the name(s) of the author(s) where the work was carried out. The address of the author(s) at the time of publication, if different from the institution at which the work was carried out, should be given in a footnote. The name, email address, full mailing address, telephone and fax numbers of the person submitting the paper must be given. The title page should be followed by an Abstract of 50 to 200 words, and a list of four to six keywords. Figures and tables should not be embedded in the text but included, each on a separate page, at the end of the manuscript. A separate list of figure captions should be provided.
Language Papers must be written in a clear style in English. Authors whose first language is not English are encouraged to seek assistance in style, grammar and syntax if necessary before submitting their paper. Authors in Japan can obtain information on how to have their language checked before submission from: Elsevier Science Japan Higashi Azabu 1-chome Building 4F 1-9-5 Higashi Azabu Minato-ku Tokyo 106 Japan Tel: +81 (03) 5561 5032 Fax: +81 (03) 5561 5045 E-mail: info@elsevier.co.jp
Units and nomenclature SI units and IUPAC chemical nomenclature should be used. Any non-standard abbreviations should be defined the first time they occur.
References References should be listed at the end of the paper, and numbered in the order of their appearance in the text. Authors should ensure that every reference in the text appears in the list of references and vice versa. Numerals for references should appear in square brackets [], and any reference to authors' names in the text should omit initials. A reference to a publication with more than two authors in the text should be to the name of the first author et al., but in the list of references the names and initials of all authors must be given. In the reference list, periodicals [1], books [2], and multi-author books [3] should be cited as in the following examples: 1. A. Misra, I. Finnie, On the size effect in abrasive and erosive wear, Wear 65 (1981) 359-373 2. J.A. Williams, Engineering Tribology, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1994, p.468. 3. G.W. Stachowiak, Numerical Characterization of wear particle morphology, in: I.M. Hutchings (Ed.), New Directions in Tribology, Mechanical Engineering Publications Ltd., Bury St Edmunds, pp, 371-389, 1997.
Tables Tables should be numbered sequentially and printed in double spacing on separate sheets. Careful thought should be given to layout so that the significance of the results can be readily grasped by the reader. Each table should have a title which makes the general meaning understandable without reference to the text.
Illustrations Line drawings should be black and white prints of high quality and suitable for direct reproduction. Half tone images (photographs, micrographs etc.) should be supplied as high contrast black and white glossy prints. Magnifications should be indicated by scale bars on micrographs. Figure captions should be typed in sequence on a separate page or pages and should be understandable without reference to the text. Colour reproduction is available if the author is willing to bear the additional incremental reproduction and printing costs. Please contact the editorial office for details. A letter confirming the author's willingness to accept these costs should be sent with the revised manuscript.
Submission of electronic text and artwork Papers must be submitted for review in hard copy form (three copies of the manuscript complete with tables and good quality copies of all figures). When a revised version is being submitted, a copy of the text and if possible the illustrations, must be supplied on computer disk. The content of the disk must exactly match the accompanying final hard-copy version. All popular word-processing packages or plain text files are acceptable. All common disk formats (floppy disk, Zip or Jaz disk, or CD-ROM) are acceptable, but e-mail submission is not. The disk should be clearly labelled with the author's name and reference number of the paper. In all cases, high quality hard-copy versions of the final illustrations, suitable for reproduction, must also be supplied, as the electronic versions may not be suitable for use. Further information on the preparation and submission of electronic artwork is avaliable from: www.elsevier.com/locate/authorartwork/
Proofs Authors will be sent proofs, which they are requested to correct and return as soon as possible. No new material may be inserted in the text after the acceptance of the paper.
