About the journal

Steroids is an international journal devoted to original research on all aspects of steroids. Its focus is on both experimental and theoretical studies in chemistry and physiochemistry, biosynthesis, metabolism, molecular biology, physiology, pharmacology, analytical techniques, comparative endocrinology, clinical research, mode of action (including that of related peptides), and the role of steroids on growth and differentiation.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscript Submission Form available at the end of these instructions

Significant original research papers and pertinent reviews on all aspects of steroids will be considered for publication. Specifically, both experimental and theoretical studies dealing with the following areas of investigation are welcome: chemistry and physiochemistry, biosynthesis, metabolism, molecular biology, physiology, pharmacology, analytical techniques, comparative endocrinology, clinical research, mode of action (including that of related peptides), and the role of steroids on growth and differentiation.
Original research papers must not have been published elsewhere (except as conference reports or abstracts, duly noted) and must not be simultaneously submitted for publication elsewhere. Proposals for review papers or "symposia in print" should be submitted directly to the editor. Letters to the editor and brief contributions to Current Controversies are welcome, for publication at the discretion of the editor. Rapid Communications will be considered if material is of unusual interest. Invited "Personal Histories" of significant scientific discoveries will also be published.
Authors for whom English is a second language may request, in their covering letter, that their manuscript be edited for grammar at the same time as the scientific review. This process is meant to accelerate the publication of manuscripts that might require extensive revision.
Manuscripts are reviewed by Editorial Board members and ad hoc reviewers. Authors may suggest, at the time of submission, suitable reviewers. For extremely specialized manuscripts, they are encouraged to do so. A manuscript that is not returned within six months after being sent to the author for revision will be treated as a new manuscript.
There are no submission fees, page charges, or obligatory reprint orders (see Reprints).

Conflict of interest policy
Consistent with the highest standards of journalism and ethics within the scientific community, authors are requested to disclose commercial or similar relationships to products or companies mentioned in or related to the subject matter of the article being submitted. Sources of funding for the article should be acknowledged in a footnote on the title page. Affiliations of authors should include corporate appointments relating to or on connection with products or companies mentioned in the article, or otherwise bearing on the subject matter thereof. Other pertinent financial relationships, such as consultancies, stock ownership or other equity interests or patent-licensing arrangements, should be disclosed to the Editor-in-Chief in the cover letter at the time of submission. Such information will be held in confidence during the review process. If the article is accepted for publication, the means of disclosure will be discussed with the author, although Elsevier reserves the right to make final decisions on the issue. Questions about this policy should be directed to the Editor-in-Chief.

Manuscript Submission Form Please use the Manuscript Submission Form when preparing a manuscript for submission. This form can be found in all recent copies of the journal, as well as in the Guide for Authors on www.elsevier.com/locate/steroids
The use of this form might avoid any unnecessary delays.

Manuscripts Provide a cover letter indicating the name, address, and telephone and fax numbers of the individual to whom correspondence and questions should be directed. Be sure to include a street address (not merely a PO Box) and postal code, as required for FedEx delivery. (If a PO Box is preferable for general mailing, please indicate clearly.)
Submit five copies of the manuscript, including text, references, tables, figure legends, and figures.
Double space the entire manuscript and type it on 8.5 by 11-inch (21.5- by 28-cm) white bond paper with at least 1-inch margins on all four sides.
Arrange the manuscript in the following order: title page, abstract, keywords, text, acknowledgments, references, footnotes, tables, figure legends, and figures. Number the pages in sequence, with the title page as page 1, the abstract as page 2, etc.
Text: Arrange the body of the manuscript in the following order: Introduction, Experimental, Results, Discussion.

Computer disks
Authors are encouraged to submit a 3 1/2" HD/DD computer disk to the editorial office. Please observe the following criteria. Send only hard copy when first submitting your paper for acceptance and review. When your paper has been refereed, revised if necessary, and accepted, send a disk containing the final version with the final hard copy. Make certain that the disk and hard copy match exactly (in the event that the disk cannot be read, the hard copy will be used). Specify what software was used, including which release, e.g. WordPerfect 6.1. Specify what computer was used (IBM compatible PC, Apple Macintosh, etc.) The article file should include all textual material (text, references, tables, figure captions, etc.) and separate illustration files, if available. The file should follow the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of this journal (see below). The file should be single spaced and should use the wrap-around end-of-line feature, i.e. returns at the end of paragraphs only. Place two returns after every element, such as title, headings, paragraphs, figure and table callouts. Be sure to keep back-up disks for reference and safety.

Title page
Give full title of paper. (Do not use asterisks or other extraneous symbols in title.) List authors in sequence, according to the importance of each author's contribution. Give the first name, middle initial, and last name of all authors. List each author's institutional affiliation(s). Show the address of each author at the time of the study and include the present address if it differs.
Provide the name and address of the corresponding author to whom reprint requests should be sent. Give the name and address of the institution from which the work originated.
Provide a brief running title of up to 50 characters and spaces.

Abstract
Provide an abstract of up to 250 words that clearly states the hypothesis tested, results, and conclusions. Do not cite references; try to avoid abbreviations.

Keywords
List up to six keywords appropriate for use by computerized abstracting services (not for use in the Steroids volume index) on a separate line immediately below the abstract. Note that steroid and/or sterol should be a keyword.

Text
Begin each section of the text on a new page. Arrange the text in the following order:
* Introduction: The rationale for the study.
* Experimental: A clear and precise description of the experimental procedures. Identify all drugs and chemicals used, dosages, and routes of administration. All methods must be referenced and/or described in sufficient detail to enable a reader to repeat the experiment. For animal and human studies the experimental protocol must be humane and ethical. In all manuscripts reporting the results of human studies, a statement must appear in the Experimental section indicating that approval was obtained from the institutional review board and that all human subjects signed written informed consent.
* Results: A factual account of the study's findings. Present these as logically appropriate in text, tables, or figures; do not repeat in text what is demonstrated in a table or figure.
* Discussion: A summary emphasizing new and important aspects of the study. Ensure that all conclusions are justified by the results of the study. Identify the implications of the findings and their limitations.

Acknowledgments
Acknowledge grants, sponsors, funding sources, and individuals who provided significant assistance. Include the affiliations of individuals being thanked. It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission from all those mentioned by name, because readers may infer their endorsement.

References
In the text, references should be numbered consecutively by arabic numerals. Do not use multiple references such as 3a, 3b. Do not treat private communications, unpublished observations, or papers "submitted for publication" (not yet accepted) as numbered references. Such references should be included in the text, in parentheses, or treated as footnotes. The designation "in press" implies acceptance for publication; such papers are referenced by number, with the published papers.

In the References section, list references in numerical order (the same as the order of citation in the text). Refer to the current Index Medicus for style of abbreviations (single-word titles are not abbreviated). List all authors. Include the title of article or chapter and inclusive pagination. Follow the arrangement, capitalization, and punctuation style illustrated by the examples below, but double space.

[41] Doane BD, Fried W, Schwartz F. Response of uremic patients to nandrolone decanoate. Arch Intern Med 1985;135:972-5.
[42] Fried W, Gurney CW, Fesler FA. Effects of androgens on erythropoiesis: In: Fisher JW, Cafruny EJ, editors. Renal Pharmacology. New York: Appleton-Century-Crofts, 1971:197-210.
[43] Smith DA. Title of thesis. Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, 1993 (Thesis).
[44] MacDonald OM, inventor; Kuraray Co. Ltd., Japan, assignee. Title. US Patent 79-106768. 1979 Aug 21.

Tables
Type each table (double spaced) on a separate page. If a table must be continued, use a second sheet and repeat all headings. Provide a title for each table.

Figure legends
Provide a concise legend for each figure. Type legends (double spaced) separately from the text. In the legend, identify and explain all abbreviations, symbols, arrows, and figure parts. The use of symbols in legends is restricted to standard symbols that can be typeset; it is usually preferable to place the key symbols directly on the art.

Figures
Submit one original set and four sets of high-quality copies of professionally prepared line drawings or glossy black and white photographs. When halftones are included, submit five glossy prints of each. All labels should be professionally lettered. Most illustrations will be reduced to the single column width (3.25 inches); therefore, lettering must be large enough to be easily readable (at least 8-point type after reduction). Calibration bars should be included on all micrographs. All art should be labeled on the back with the author's name, consecutive figure number, and an arrow indicating the top of the figure. In the case of photographs, write the label before placing it on the photograph; writing on the back of a photograph can leave indentations that will show when printed.

Units of measure
Standard metric units are preferred. SI units are optional, except that the use of Bq (becquerel) is not acceptable; use Ci (curie) or dpm (disintegrations per minute). Centrifugation should be described in terms of force (Xg), not as rpm.

Nomenclature
Refer to drugs by their approved generic names. If trade names are used, the generic equivalent should be given parenthetically the first time. Identify compounds by the formal chemical name at first use; thereafter the trivial name may be used. All names should be in accordance with the most recent IUPAC-IUB rules on the nomenclature of steroids published in Pure and Applied Chemistry 61, 1783-1822, 1989.
Substituted steroids should be named so that only one functional group is designated as a suffix and all other substituents are listed as prefixes. If the first letter of the suffix is a vowel, the terminal "e" of the name of the hydrocarbon should be dropped (e.g., etiocholan-17-one). Unsaturation should be indicated by writing the locant number for the double bond(s) before the suffix (e.g., 3 -hydroxyandrost-5-en-17-one). Trivial names may be modified by prefixes indicating substituents (e.g., 17-hydroxyprogesterone) but must not be more cumbersome than the systematic names they replace. Chemically impossible trivial names (e.g., 20-hydroxyprogesterone) are not acceptable. Alcohols are named as ols or hydroxy derivatives, not as dihydroketones. Isotope location should be designated by a prefix placed directly before the part of the name to which it applies: e.g., 3 ,20-dihydroxy-[4-14C]pregnan-7-one; [3-3H3]methoxyandrostan-17-one, 11 ,21-dihydroxy-[1,2-3H; 4-14C]pregnane-3,20-dione. Iodinated compounds are to be labeled in the same manner; e.g., [16-125I]iodoestrandiol; 3-hydroxy-[21-125I]iodopregn-5-en-20-one; but 125I-labeled LH because iodine is not a part of native LH.

Style
Note that Steroids uses the serial comma, e.g., Jones, Smith, and Brown (comma before "and" in a series of three or more items).
American-style spelling is required. For example: color, not colour; hydrolyze, not hydrolyse; estrogen, not oestrogen; labeled, not labelled. End-of-line hyphenation should be according to American-style word division (based on pronunciation, not word derivation).
Leave a space between number and unit (50 mg, 3.5 M). For solvent proportions use the following style: ethanol/methanol (70 : 30 v/v) or ethyl acetate/isooctane (1 : 1).

Instructions regarding GenBank/DNA Sequence Linking:

DNA sequences and GenBank Accesion numbers: Many Elsevier journals cite "gene accession numbers" in their running text and footnotes. Gene accession numbers refer to genes or DNA sequences about which further information can be found in the database at the National Center for Biotechnical Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine. Elsevier authors wishing to enable other scientists to use the accession numbers cited in their papers via links to these sources, should type this information in the following manner:
For each and every accession number cited in an article, authors should type the accession number in bold, underlined text. Letters in the accession number should always be capitalised. (See Example 1 below). This combination of letters and format will enable Elsevier's typesetters to recognize the relevant texts as accession numbers and add the required link to GenBank's sequences.

Example 1: "GenBank accession nos. AI631510, AI631511, AI632198, and BF223228), a B-cell tumor from a chronic lymphatic leukemia (GenBank accession no. BE675048), and a T-cell lymphoma (GenBank accession no. AA361117)".

Authors are encouraged to check accession numbers used very carefully. An error in a letter or number can result in a dead link.
In the final version of the printed article, the accession number text will not appear bold or underlined (see Example 2 below).

Example 2: "GenBank accession nos. AI631510, AI631511, AI632198, and BF223228, a B-cell tumor from a chronic lymphatic leukemia (GenBank accession no. BE675048), and a T-cell lymphoma (GenBank accession no. AA361117)".

In the final version of the electronic copy, the accession number text will be linked to the appropriate source in the NCBI databases enabling readers to go directly to that source from the article.

Proofs
Authors are responsible for ensuring that all manuscripts (whether original or revised) are accurately typed before final submission. One set of proofs is sent to the corresponding author before publication, which must be returned within 48 hours of receipt. The publisher reserves the right to charge for any change made at the proof stage (other than printer's errors).

Reprints
Use order form and price list accompanying proofs.

Verification of authorship and copyright
Authors are responsible for ensuring the integrity and quality of their reported research. Prior to publication all authors are required to attest to this by signing a letter of submission. No manuscript will be published without this consent.
Before publication authors are requested to assign copyright to Elsevier Science, Inc. This allows the publisher to sanction reprints and photocopies and to authorize the reprint of complete issues or volumes according to demand. Authors' traditional rights will not be jeopardized by assigned copyright in this manner as they will retain the right to re-use and veto over third-party publication. The appropriate copyright transfer form is sent to authors with the proofs.
