 NOTES FOR AUTHORS

The following notes are suggestions designed to help the preparation of typescript for publication.  Experience has shown that authors can be saved much inconvenience if their papers are typed in a form which the printer can deal with without substantial amendment.

Initial typescript

1. Papers should be typed on A4 sheets, using double-spacing and

only one side of the paper.  If possible please would you submit your paper by e-mail as a word.doc attachment.  Otherwise, please send three hard copies to Caroline Baggaley at the address above.

2. A margin of at least 3 cm should be left on each side of the     typed page and at the top and bottom of each page.

3. All pages should be numbered.

4. Single quotation marks should be used throughout.

5. Sub-titles, section headings and sub-headings should be typed     in lower case letters, with capitals where appropriate, and     underlined.

6. All titles of books should be in italics or underlined.

7. Where footnotes are used they should be numbered throughout the paper and placed at the end of the article.

8. When using references, please use the Harvard system, ie

cite the author's surname, the year of publication, and the page reference immediately after the  quoted material.   With this system it is essential that the bibliography lists every work cited in the text.  Where there are two or more works by one author in the same year, they must be distinguished as l991a, 1991b etc.  The bibliography must be typed in the order author, initials, (date), title, place, publisher.  Locational references such as op.cit. and ibid. should not be used.

9. Maps and diagrams should preferably be supplied on a disk.  The positioning of tables and diagrams within the text should be clearly marked.

10.The typescript should be carefully checked for errors before     it is submitted for publication.  Alterations should follow a standard, accepted form. eg the B.S.I. Table of Symbols Printers' and Authors' Proof Corrections.

11.We require an abstract of 100-200 words and ask that the paper    is around 6-7,000 words long.

Copyright Assignment Form
Authors will be required to assign copyright in their paper to the Editorial Board of the Sociological Review. Copyright assignment in a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless copyright has been assigned. To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form here. Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases need not necessarily be assigned.
