Instructions to Authors
As part of our continuing efforts to support both authors and reviewers, we are pleased to announce that, from March 1, 2008, The Sociological Quarterly will be adopting a web-based submission and peer review system called Manuscript Central. All new manuscript submissions should now be made at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/socq. We trust that this system will be quick and convenient for both authors and reviewers, and will enable us to reduce the time it takes to make a decision on a manuscript by reducing postal and other delays throughout the editorial process. Although we realise that this may take some time to get used to, we would like all authors and reviewers to use the new online submission and review process. Manuscripts previously submitted using paper-based procedures will continue through the old system.
Manuscript submission is a step-by-step process needing little special preparation other than having all parts of the manuscript in an electronic format and having access to a computer with an Internet connection and a web-browser. To submit a manuscript to The Sociological Quarterly, authors should go to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/socq, where they can upload the manuscript and any other material they would like to communicate to the editor. Full help and instructions are provided on-screen. As an author, you will be prompted for author and manuscript details and then to upload your manuscript file(s). In order to ensure that your manuscript conforms to journal style, please consult the 'Instructions to Contributors', which is located at the back of every issue, or the 'Author Guidelines', which can be found at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com. Please remember that we review 'blind', so that neither authors nor reviewers know each others' identity. To this end, please do not identify yourself, your colleagues or institution within the submitted files; instead, give your details during the submission process.
In the future, all correspondence will be by email. A completed submission is confirmed by email immediately and your paper will then enter the editorial process. Your manuscript will have a unique manuscript number and you can check the progress of your manuscript at any time by returning to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/socq. When a decision is made, revisions can be submitted online, with an opportunity to view and respond to all comments.
Manuscript review will also be handled online. Reviewers will be given full instructions and access to the paper at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/socq. The review form and comments can be completed online and immediately made available to the Journal and the Editor.
Full support for both authors and reviewers is provided. Each page of the website has a red 'Get Help Now' icon connecting directly to the online support system.. Telephone support is available through the US ScholarOne support office 3:00am-8:30pm EST, 5 days a week on: 1-434-817-2040. For further guidance, please consult the 'Instructions to Contributors', which is located at the back of every issue, or the 'Author Guidelines'. If you do not have Internet access or cannot submit online, the Editorial Office will help with online submissions. Please contact the Editorial Office, by telephone, 785-864-4442, or by e-mail, tsq@ku.edu.
We hope that authors and reviewers will find that the new system makes their lives easier and we look forward to the new system streamlining the review process, leading to rapid decision making and ensuring that the time from submission to publication is as short as possible.
NOTE: There is a non-refundable $10.00 processing fee for manuscript submissions. This fee is waived for papers written solely by students. Please indicate your student status to the editors in a note with your submission. There are two ways to pay the fee: 1) Electronically at http://www.themss.org/TSQpage.html, or 2) by mailing a check payable to the "Midwest Sociological Society" to the Midwest Sociological Society, 429 24th St. N. PUBLICATION POLICIES AND INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS
Editorial Policy
1. As a generalist journal, The Sociological Quarterly invites the contribution of both article and note length manuscripts on all topics of interest to a broad sociological audience, including new theoretical developments, results of research that advance fundamental understanding of social processes, and methodological innovation. Submissions are welcomed from all authors and are not restricted with regard to method, intellectual style, academic discipline, or author's affiliation. Authors should understand that the editors are strongly influenced by the evaluations of external reviews but are not bound by them. In every case, preference will be given to innovative sociology that displays clear arguments, persuasive evidence, intelligent analysis, and clear writing.
2. Submission of a manuscript to The Sociological Quarterly clearly implies commitment to publish in this journal. Submission of a manuscript to another professional journal while it is under review by the TSQ is regarded by the MSS as unethical. Manuscripts or significan findings that have already been or will soon be published elsewhere are unacceptable.
3. There is a non-refundable $10.00 processing fee for manuscript submissions. This fee is waived for papers written solely by students. Please indicate your student status to the editors in a note with your submission. There are two ways to pay the fee: 1) electronically at http://www.themss.org/TSQpage.html or 2) by sending a check payable to the "Midwest Sociological Society" to Midwest Sociological Society, 429 24th St. N. La Crosse, WI 54601.
4. Manuscripts are submitted via the Manuscript Central web site detailed below. All other editorial correspondence should be addressed, preferably by email, to the co-editors: Brian L. Donovan & William G. Staples, Department of Sociology, Fraser Hall, 1415 Jayhawk Blvd. Room 716, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas 66045-7556, tsq@ku.edu.
5. Correspondence on membership and change of address should be sent to: Midwest Sociological Society, 429 24th St. N., La Crosse, WI 54601 (e-mail: MidwestSS@centurytel.net).
Manuscript Central
1. Beginning March 1, 2008, The Sociological Quarterly adopted a web-based submission and peer review system called Manuscript Central. All manuscript submissions should be made at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/socq, where authors can upload the manuscript and any other material they would like to communicate to the editors.
2. Please remember that we peer-review all manuscripts "double-blind", so that neither authors nor reviewers know each others' identity. To this end, please do not identify yourself, your colleagues or institution, or include personal notes within the "blind" copy submitted. Delete or rewrite any text that identifies you as the author: if you feel the need to cite your own work, please write "Smith (1992) concluded..., but do not write "I concluded (Smith 1992)...."
3. A one-paragraph informative abstract (approximately 100 words) must accompany the manuscript. The abstract should be brief, concise, and complete in itself without reference to the body of the article. Care should be taken to include all keyword terms.
4. The entire manuscript, including abstract, quotations, tabular material, and references must be double-spaced, preferably in Times New Roman size 12 font, with at least 1-inch margins on all four sides. The entire manuscript should not exceed 40 pages.
5. Each table should appear on a separate page with a brief descriptive title. The tables should be numbered consecutively and placed at the end of the manuscript following references. Placement in text must be indicated by a phrase such as "Insert Table 1 about here" set off from the rest of the text. Sources for more information in a table should be footnoted below the title.
6. All illustrations and charts should be referred to as Figures in the text. They must be finished drawings not needing further artwork or typesetting, and originals will be required if the manuscript is accepted. Placement must be indicated in text.
7. Footnotes should be numbered in text and all notes should appear as a separate appendix to the text. Footnotes are to be kept to a minimum, and used only for substantive observations. Source citations are made within text rather than in footnotes.
8. References to published works must be cited in text according to the author/date system and listed alphabetically in the reference section at the end of the manuscript. Examples of appropriate format for chapters, articles, and books appear below. For other types, consult the ASA Publication Manual.

NEW: Online production tracking is now available for your article through Blackwell's Author Services.
Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
