Manuscripts will not be returned unless accompanied by a stamped self-addressed envelope.

Manuscript Preparation: Submit five (5) copies of the typed manuscript on 8.5 by 11 inch white paper. The entire manuscript, including all text, references, endnotes, and tables must be double-spaced using 10 point or larger non-proportional type, with at least 1.25 inch margins. Type should not be justified. Italics should be designated with underline only, and boldface should be reserved for mathematical symbols requiring that emphasis.  Please consult The Chicago Manual of Style (14th edition) for specific examples and directions.

Manuscripts should be no longer than 35 pages, including tables, appendices, and references. Research notes should not exceed 15 pages. A $10 (US) processing fee is required with submission. This processing fee will be waived for manuscripts where a student is the first or sole author.

Title Pages and Abstract: The title page should contain the title, author's name, affiliation, address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address. Include a second "blind" title page with the title only (omitting the author's name). An abstract of 150-175 words is required.

Reference Format: Sociological Inquiry follows the format adopted for use in ASA journals.

In the text: Source references should be identified by the author's last name, year of publication, and pagination where necessary.

In the bibliography: All work cited in the text should be in the bibliography, beginning on a separate sheet (headed "REFERENCES"). References must be complete, correct, and double-spaced. If there are two or more items by the same author, list them in order of year of publication, beginning with the most recent.

Endnotes: Notes should appear at the end of the manuscript, beginning on a separate sheet (headed "ENDNOTES"). Type the notes in numerical order, double-spaced, following the REFERENCES section. Notes are numbered consecutively in the text by superscript numerals.

Tables and Figures: All tables and figures should be numbered consecutively (e.g., Table 1, Figure 1) and include a descriptive title (for tables) or caption (for figures). Insert a note in parentheses in the text indicating placement (e.g., "Table 1 about here").
