About the journal

Aims and Scope:

The Scandinavian Journal of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation is an international scientific journal covering clinically oriented biochemical and physiological research.

Since the journal was launched in 1949, it has been a forum for international laboratory medicine, closely related to and edited by The Scandinavian Society for Clinical Chemistry.

The journal contains peer-reviewed articles, editorials, invited reviews, and short technical notes. Additionally, several supplements are published each year, consisting of monographs, and symposium and congress reports covering subjects within clinical chemistry and clinical physiology.

The short handling time, currently 14-16 weeks from receipt of manuscript to acceptance, guarantees that the journal is at the forefront in the field of clinical and physiological research.

The supplements consist of monographs and symposium reports covering clinical chemistry and clinical physiological subjects.

Readership:

Researchers and professionals working within the areas of clinical chemistry, clinical biochemistry, and clinical physiology.

Instructions to Authors

Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

GENERAL
The Scandinavian Journal of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation accepts contributions within clinical chemistry/biochemistry and clinical physiology. This includes molecular biology, hematology, clinical immunology and immunohematology from all countries. Included in the publishing programme are Original Articles, Editorials, Invited Reviews, Proceedings From Meetings, Short Technical Notes (improvements of methods, etc.) and Letters To The Editor. All articles are published in English.

Manuscripts should be sent to the Editorial Secretary, Scandinavian Journal of Clinical & Laboratory Investigation, Institute of Clinical Biochemistry, Rikshospitalet, NO-0027 Oslo, Norway. Papers must not have been submitted for publication elsewhere, and on acceptance they become the copyright of the journal. All authors must sign a statement that they have agreed to submission of the manuscript for publication in the journal.

MANUSCRIPTS
All manuscripts submitted must be prepared in accordance with the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (the Vancouver convention), available at
http://www.icmje.org

Authors should familiarise themselves with and follow the style in a recent issue. Manuscripts should be submitted in original with three additional hard copies (printouts). For the final version of the (revised) manuscript a diskette version should be submitted together with the paper copies. The electronic files and the printout must be identical. The author must warrant that whenever appropriate, any patient or participant mentioned in the text or shown in a photograph has given informed consent to publication of such material. When informed consent has been obtained, it should be indicated in the published article

PRESENTATION
The material should be presented in the following order:

1.       Title page, with the author's name, institution, and, if the title is longer than 40 letters and spaces, a short title not exceeding this limit for use in the running heads. Date of submission should also be given.

2.       An abstract which should not exceed 250 words in length; up to 10 key words should be appended to the abstract in alphabetical order, and they should not include words contained in the title of the article. When possible, the key words should be adjusted to Medical Subject Headings of Index Medicus. The name and full postal address of the author to whom proofs and offprints are to be sent should appear under the key words.

3.       The main text.

4.       Tables with their headings. Tables should be put on separate pages and numbered with roman numerals. Each table should have a short descriptive heading and sufficient explanation to be understandable without reference to the text. Units in which the results are expressed should appear at the top of each column. Abbreviations should be defined in a footnote the first time they are used.

5.       Legends to figures.

6.       References, which are to be numbered consecutively as they appear in the text. In the list of references, all authors are to be named. Unpublished results should not be listed in the reference list unless the article is accepted for publication.

7.       Figures. Please make sure that the units of measurement are presented in SI units, and that all labelling is in proportion to the figure. The size of letters, numbers and symbols in figures should be l.3--l.6 mm when printed. Graphs should be plotted on blue graph or plain white paper: grid lines that are to show in the engraving should be inked in black. Photographs should be submitted as unmounted glossy enlargements showing good details. All the legends to figures must be typed together, in double spacing on a separate sheet or sheets. When computer graphics are used, they should be submitted as separate files in EPS- or TIFF-format, not incorporated into the electronic document. Halftones and colour photos should be included separately. The extra cost of printing colour photos will be charged to the author. The author may be charged for expensive typesetting of complicated tables or formulae. The latter should either be submitted electronically or as original drawings or photographs for presentation as figures.

8.       Brief acknowledgements of grants and other assistance, if any, can be printed at the end of the text. Cost of changes to the electronic manuscript may be charged to the author(s). The diskette should be labelled with the author's name and the name of the computer platform and version of the word processing system used. Taylor & Francis can receive files from any word processing system, but Microsoft Word for Windows files are preferred. A submittal form (optional) is available on the publisher's Web page (www.tandf.no). Manuscripts should be sent to the Editorial Secretary, Scandinavian Journal of Clinical & Laboratory Investigation, Institute of Clinical Biochemistry, Rikshospitalet, NO-0027 Oslo, Norway. For further information and support, please send mail to the editorial secretary (gaut.gadeholt@labmed.uio.no) or publisher gerd.halvorsen@tandf.no or to m.s.k.thoresen@labmed.uio.no.

ABBREVIATIONS AND TERMINOLOGY
Any non-standard abbreviations (to be avoided if possible) should be properly defined in the text the first time they are used. For chemical nomenclature, please consult www.chem.qmw.ac.uk/iupac, which contains full-text recommendations from the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.

Quantities and units must be expressed according to the recommendation of the Système International (SI), the only exception being hydrostatic pressures in body fluids: these should be expressed in mmHg.. The volume unit Liter must be abbreviated "L' (capital L). Concentration units are mol/liter, (milli, micro, nano, pico)mol/L, written in full or as standard abbreviation.

Please use these simple guidelines when preparing your electronic manuscript:

1.       Please be consistent. The same elements should be keyed in exactly the same way throughout the manuscript.

2.       Do not break words at the end of lines. Use a hyphen only to hyphenate compound words.

3.       Enter only one space after the full-stop at the end of a sentence.

4.       When emphasizing words, please use the italic feature of your word processor software.

5.       . Do not justify your text; use a ragged right-hand margin.

6.       Use a double hyphen (--) to indicate a dash in text.

7.       Do not use the lowercase l for 1 (one) or the uppercase O for 0 (zero).

8.       The space bar should only be used as as word separator. Use TAB when indenting paragraphs or separating columns in tables.

9.       Please keep graphic elements (e.g. images) as separate files (e.g. EPS- or TIFF-files). Originals of good quality can also be submitted as usual.
