About the journal
Review of Scientific Instruments
Review of Scientific Instruments (RSI) is a monthly journal, published by The American Institute of Physics, devoted to scientific instruments, apparatus, and techniques. Its contents include original and review articles on instruments in physics, chemistry, and the life sciences; book reviews; and sections on new instruments and new materials. One volume is published annually. Conference proceedings are occasionally published and supplied in addition to the Journal's scheduled monthly issues.
Editorial policy is to interpret the term "scientific instruments" in the widest sense, as all of the tools of the scientist. We publish information on instruments, apparatus, techniques of experimental measurement, and related mathematical analysis. Since the use of instruments is not confined to the physical sciences, we welcome contributions from any of the physical and biological sciences and from related cross-disciplinary areas of science and technology.
Review Articles are invited reviews of selected topics in scientific instrumentation and experimental techniques contributed by experts in the field. Regular Articles are full-length papers describing original work on significant new ideas in instruments and measurement. Normally some data demonstrating the performance of an instrument should be included; proposals for a new instrument without such demonstration are acceptable only if they include significant analysis of the characteristics of the proposed techniques. Mathematics related to particular instruments or to measurements science is appropriate. Notes are short contributions, limited to three (3) printed pages in length; in general, a Note is appropriate for a restricted topic which can be dealt with in a brief text. Letters to the Editor often discuss issues in previously published articles, frequently accompanied by a reply from the original authors. However, they may be devoted to information or comments of a more general nature.
Information for Contributors contains instructions for manuscript preparation and is published in the first issue of each volume.
Within New Products, the New Instruments section contains descriptions of new commercial instruments prepared by the Associate Editor based on material supplied by the manufacturer. Literature should be sent to the Editor or directly to the Associate Editor The New Materials and Components section contains descriptions of new materials and commercial components prepared by the Associate Editor based on material supplied by the manufacturer; in addition, information on newly measured material properties are solicited from readers. Literature should be sent to the Associate Editor. Books Received are listed when they are on subjects of an instrumental or experimental character. Some books are reviewed on an irregular basis. Readers who wish to review a listed book should contact the Editor.

A covering letter should specify authors, title, Journal, the corresponding author's e-mail address, and any special requests. Unless otherwise stated, submission of a manuscript will be understood to mean that the paper has been neither copyrighted, classified, published, nor is being considered for publication elsewhere.
Manuscripts may be submitted in one of two ways:
a. Electronically to rsi@anl.gov. Authors may submit manuscripts to the editorial office electronically as a single PDF file attached to an e-mail message. File formats, other than PDF, are not acceptable. The single PDF file must contain all material needed for peer review, including all figures, tables, references, and appendices (if any).
b. Printed manuscripts by conventional mail (2 copies) to the address shown above.
The Editor strongly prefers to correspond directly with the author rather than through the reports division or through executives of the author's laboratory.
Authors whose manuscripts have been accepted for publication will receive correspondence informing them of the issue for which it is tentatively scheduled. This correspondence includes instructions for sending accepted manuscripts to AIP Production electronically. Proofs and all subsequent correspondence pertaining to papers in the production process should be addressed to:

Reference must be made to the AIP identification number, title, author, and scheduled issue date. A limited number of alterations in proof are unavoidable, but the cost of making extensive alterations after the article has been typeset may be charged to the author. Please do not address correspondence about proofs, reprints, artwork, publication charges, etc., to the Editor. To do so simply delays the appropriate action and response.
Accepted Manuscript Status Inquiry System (AMSIS): Through the AMSIS homepage, authors may access information about significant milestones for their accepted manuscript during the production process at AIP. AMSIS can be used only by authors of accepted manuscripts; direct requests about papers still in the review process to the Editorial Office. General information regarding publication charges, color charges, copyrights, and similar material may be found on the Journal Masthead Page of each issue.
