About the journal
|
Postgraduate Medicine considers only original work that has not been published previously in print or electronic media. We especially welcome review articles that help our audience of busy primary care physicians solve common clinical problems. We do not publish research studies or speculative material.
Because of our clinical focus, at least one coauthor must be a practicing physician and students may not coauthor review articles. Authors are encouraged to contact the editor to check on the suitability of their topic before. |

Instructions to Authors
Preparing your manuscript
A typical clinical article averages 2,000 words of text, excluding cover page, references, and illustrative material. Manuscripts exceeding 2,500 words are unlikely to be considered.
Arrange manuscript elements in the following order, each starting on a separate page: cover page, text, summary or conclusion, reference list, tables, figure legends, and CME objectives and questions. Present all elements in the same type font, and print the manuscript double-spaced in a letter-quality typeface on 8 1/2 x 11-inch paper. Do not justify the right margin. Number pages consecutively, starting with the cover page.
Cover page: Indicate the article title and designate a corresponding author. For each author, list full name, highest pertinent academic degree, title of current position, address, and office phone and fax numbers. For the corresponding author, provide this information plus e-mail address and home phone number. Note the word count of the text at the bottom of the cover page.
References: Key sources must be properly credited and referenced. References should be current (past 5 years) and should not exceed 20. Cite references in the text in numerically consecutive order; do not use citation software. With the manuscript, send a photocopy of the first page of each article referenced. Format references as shown in these examples:
Journal: Pentz WH. Controlling isolated systolic hypertension: no time to be complacent. Postgrad Med 1999;105(5):95-110
Book: Boucher RC. Cystic fibrosis. In: Fauci AS, Braunwald E, Isselbacher KJ, et al, eds. Harrison's principles of internal medicine. 14th ed. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1998:1448-51
Tables and illustrative graphics: Original tables and graphics are encouraged. If a table or graphic was published previously, include the complete reference along with a photocopy of the table or graphic from the published source. We will request permission to reuse copyrighted material.
Give each table a title, and number it consecutively according to its citation in the text. Tables should not duplicate information in the text.
Number each graphic consecutively according to its citation in the text and provide a short descriptive legend. For black-and-white photos and x-rays, submit glossy non-screened prints in duplicate. On the back, label the top and include the author's name and the figure number. Color images are used when appropriate; reproduction is best from 35-mm slides. Label the front and top of each slide. A signed release from the patient is required for photos that show identifying features. Original graphics are returned after publication.
If you wish to submit digital graphics, check with us in advance on suitable formats. High-resolution graphics are required for magazine reproduction.
CME quiz: Clinical review articles are included in an accredited print or electronic CME quiz. With your manuscript, include three learning objectives for your article and four multiple-choice questions with a, b, c, d answers. Each question must have only one correct answer, which must be clearly stated in the article.
Style: Our journal style closely follows the American Medical Association Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors (9th ed. Baltimore, Md: Williams & Wilkins, 1998). For drugs, use generic names; per our style, we will add up to three brand names in parentheses at first mention of the generic name.
For laboratory values, present conventional units first, followed by SI units in parentheses.
Submitting your manuscript
Address manuscripts to Manuscript Coordinator, Postgraduate Medicine, 4530 W 77th St, Minneapolis, MN 55435.
Send the original and four copies. Include a computer disk containing the manuscript in Microsoft Word or text-only format; note the software program and version on the disk label and use a disk mailer.
Authorship statements: The cover letter must state that the article has not been published previously and is not being submitted elsewhere. It also must state that the manuscript is the original work of the authors and that all authors have approved its submission. The authors will be asked to attest to these statements and to transfer copyright (except for federal employees) if the article is accepted.
Financial disclosure: The cover letter must include a statement of financial disclosure, listing any financial interests the authors have in the subject matter of the article or stating that no such interests exist. These interests include, but are not limited to, employment, consultancies, honoraria, stock ownership, royalties, grants, research support, and support in preparation of the manuscript.
How the review process works
The corresponding author is notified by mail when the manuscript is received. Each manuscript is screened by the editors and, if found suitable, sent for review to primary care and other specialists in the subject area. A decision about acceptance, revision, or rejection is usually made within 10 weeks. Manuscripts that are not accepted will be returned.
Accepted articles are edited to conform to the journal's style and format. An edited manuscript is sent to the corresponding author for approval. The author is responsible for all changes in the manuscript, including those of the manuscript editor.
