Decisions concerning editing, revision, acceptance, or rejection of any manuscript are made by the editor based on the reviews of the associate editors and guest reviewers. Editing may include shortening an article, reducing the number of illustrations or tables, or changing the paper's format. Accepted articles may appear with an invited discussion if the editors so desire. Authors of manuscripts that describe experimental studies on humans must supply to the Editor a statement that the study was approved by an institutional review committee and that the subjects gave informed consent. In those situations where a formal institutional review board process is not available, the authors must indicate that the principles outlined in the Declaration of Helsinki have been followed. More information regarding the Declaration of Helsinki can be found at www.vitreoussociety.org/journal/instruct/helsinki.htm.

Manuscripts containing original material are accepted for consideration if neither the article nor any part of its essential substance, tables, or figures has been or will be published or submitted elsewhere before appearing in the journal (in part or in full, in other words or in the same words, in English or in another language) and will not be submitted elsewhere unless rejected by the journal or withdrawn by the author. If an author violates this requirement or engages in similar misconduct, the journal's Editorial Board may reject the manuscript or impose a moratorium on acceptance of new manuscripts from the author. If it deems the misconduct sufficiently serious, the Editorial Board can refer the matter for investigation to the author's academic institution or hospital, to the appropriate state or local disciplinary body, and/or to the Ethics Committee of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

All published material becomes the sole property of the journal, copyrighted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. By submitting an article, letter to the editor, or brief communication, all authors agree to each of these conditions.

Manuscript Preparation Three copies of the manuscript and three sets of illustrations are needed for both the review and the production processes. Manuscripts should not exceed approximately 4000 words. Because of space limitations, illustrations should be kept to a minimum. Occasional exceptions are made for prize-winning essays, collective reviews, solicited material, or special works. Manuscripts will not be accepted by e-mail.

A letter of permission is required for any and all material that has been published previously. It is the responsibility of the author to request permission from the publisher for any material that is being reproduced. This requirement applies to text, illustrations, and tables. Authors are also required to obtain written releases from patients whose photographs are submitted to the journal for publication if the patients can be identified. A standardized patient authorization form for the release of patient photographs may be obtained from the Editorial Office or on-line at: www.plasreconsurg.com. If an author chooses to use his or her own version for patient authorization, the form must include permission to use photographs for all types of media including but not limited to the following: Print, visual, electronic or broadcast media. Also, details in text that might identify patients should be avoided unless essential for scientific purposes. If identification of patients is unavoidable, informed consents should be obtained.

All copy must be double-spaced, including text, footnotes, references, figure legends, and tables. One and one-half inch (4 cm) margins are required at the top, sides, and bottom of the manuscript to allow space for the copyeditor's work. Each manuscript page must be numbered clearly, with the numbering continuing throughout.

All references, figures, and tables must be numbered and must be cited in numerical order in the text. Citations of figures and tables show the printer where to place them in the text.

If a statistical analysis is done, explanation of the method used must be stated in the text preceding the results. Unusual or complex methods of analysis should be referenced. Most papers that include statistical analyses are evaluated by a biostatistician during the review process.

The author is asked to send a disk of the manuscript at the time of revision. Disks are not accepted with the original manuscript, and it is the author's responsibility to be sure that when the disk is submitted, it matches the final hard copy of the manuscript exactly.

Illustrations and photographs must be submitted in triplicate for the peer review process. After acceptance, for publication purposes, figures must adhere to the following rules:

If the figures are black and white and not digital, we require 2 sets of glossy figures.

If the figures are color and not digital, we require 3 sets of glossy figures.

If the figures are black and white digital images, we require 2 sets of laser copies, and a disk in "tif" or "eps" format. An image should be no wider than 3.5 inches.

If the figures are color digital images, we require 2 sets of color laser copies, and a disk in "tif" or "eps" format.

The images need to be saved in CMYK mode. An image should be no wider than 3.5 inches.*

Separate disks for art and text are required.

*For more information about digital artwork guidelines, please visit our printer's Web site at: http://cpc.cadmus.com/da. If authors wish to have their illustrations published in color, they must communicate that desire when the manuscript is submitted. The cost of color illustrations is charged to the author by the publisher, and an estimate of the cost is provided once production has been scheduled.

There is a discount to authors who submit their color images in digital format. The cost is approximately $100/image, not including manipulation charges. Manipulation may include changing of a figure's color mode from RGB to CMYK or doing substantial re-sizing and/or cropping. Manipulation of color digital figures by the Publisher will be charged to the author at an hourly rate.

No photographs, digital or otherwise, should be substantively modified.

Illustrations, digital or otherwise, should be labeled clearly. Illustrations should be arranged symmetrically, in either "portrait" or "landscape" orientation. Before-and-after photographs should be identical in terms of size, position, and lighting. All illustrations must be accompanied by figure legends, to be attached at the end of the typewritten manuscript.

Bar graphs with various shades of black do not reproduce well. Computer-generated graphs and line drawings are acceptable if they are prepared on high-quality paper.

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery® has on-line capability to publish Web pages, PDF files, audio, and video using Article Plus, which allows authors to enhance their published presentation in the on-line version. This material is subject to peer review and must be received upon submission of the manuscript. The attachment types are as follows: URL, html, .pdf, .gif, .jpg, .wav, .doc, .xls, (.avi, .mov, .mpg, .mpeg, .dcr). File size may not exceed 5 MB. Any materials larger than 5 MB will be returned to the author. The Editorial Office is not responsible for the editing of these materials. They will be published, if accepted, as they are received. When published, the Article Plus materials will be retrievable by the end user, through the on-line version of the Journal. These presentations will be marked by a (+) sign in the table of contents in both print and on-line versions.

For an original article, the title page includes the complete title of the article; a separate list of authors' names spelled out with middle initials and degrees; a list of the cities where the authors work; a separate list of author affiliations; a footnote listing meetings at which the paper has been presented; a short running head (no more than 40 characters in length); and a statement of financial interest, if any.

Authorship requires substantial contributions to the conception, analysis, interpretation of data and the drafting and revision of manuscript submissions. If more than 10 authors are listed for any given manuscript, the overage will be relocated to the "Acknowledgement" section of the manuscript.

Authors must disclose at the time of submission on a form supplied by the journal any commercial associations that might pose or create a conflict of interest with information presented in any submitted manuscript. Such associations include consultancies, stock ownership, or other equity interests, patent licensing arrangements and payments for conducting or publicizing a study described in the manuscript. All sources of funds supporting the work must be disclosed in a footnote on the title page. This information will remain confidential while the paper is reviewed and will not influence the editorial decision. When a manuscript is accepted, the editor will discuss with the author(s) how best to disclose relevant information. After the initial submission of a manuscript, any changes whatsoever in authorship must be explained by a letter to the Editor from the authors concerned. Copyright assignment must be completed by every author.

All original articles must begin with an abstract that includes no fewer than 100 words and no more than 400 words. The abstract summarizes factual information--the problem investigated, the method used, the results obtained, and the conclusions reached. Neither a summary nor a conclusion is needed for original articles, which include an introductory abstract.

The body of the text must conform to acceptable English usage and syntax; the contents must be clear, accurate, coherent, and logical. Avoid using abbreviations unless they are so common that they are never spelled out. The journal aims for optimal readability.

The complete name and address of the corresponding author, or the author who is responsible for handling reprints, must appear between the end of the text and the beginning of the references.

Following the references, figure legends and tables, with complete credit lines for material that has been published previously, must be listed on separate pages. All figure legends and tables must be double-spaced. They must be cited in numerical order in the text and numbered accordingly in their legends.

Invited discussions of accepted manuscripts are frequently requested by the editors. The preparation of manuscripts for discussions is the same as for original articles. The title page for a discussion includes the title of the original article, a list of the authors of that article, and the words "Discussion by" followed by the author or authors of the discussion.

Case Reports and Ideas and Innovations must include a summary at the end.

All correspondence must be double-spaced and must be prepared in the appropriate format. A title must appear at the beginning of the correspondence; a complete reference must be given for any article that is being discussed; all authors must be listed at the end, followed by the complete address of the corresponding author; and references must be prepared in the appropriate style.

The style for references follows:
