About the journal

Physiologia Plantarum

Physiologia Plantarum welcomes papers on all aspects of experimental plant biology. The scope of the journal ranges from molecular and cell biology, via biochemistry and biophysics, to classical plant physiology and ecophysiology, thereby maintaining contact among the different organizational levels of plant biology. A highly qualified editorial board in collaboration with specialist referees review every manuscript. The journal's major goal is the effective transfer of primary scientific information that represents work which is original and has not been published before.

  • Instructions to Authors

The instructions below have been prepared to help the authors. If they are carefully followed, the time between receipt and publication will be minimised. Failure to follow the instructions may require that the manuscript be returned for correction, with a consequent delay in publication. Neglect of scientific standards or lack of readability may also lead to rejection of the paper.

    1. Authors submitting a paper do so on the understanding that the work has not been published before, is not being considered for publication elsewhere and has been read and approved by all authors. The submission of the manuscript by the authors means that the authors automatically agree to assign exclusive copyright to Physiologia Plantarum if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication.

    2. (online submission) For online submissions, please visit our Manuscript Central site at http://ppl.manuscriptcentral.com. Papers are accepted only in English. Prepare your manuscript using a word processing program and save it as a .doc, .pdf, .rtf or .ps file.  Any of these file types will be converted to .pdf format.  Image files such as .gif, .eps and .tif may be uploaded.  These will be converted to small .jpg files.
The converted .pdf and .jpg files will be the files evaluated during the review process.  The original files that you upload will be available in the "original Files/Files Not For Review" section and can be accessed by the journal office if necessary.
If you wish to suggest potential reviewers for your manuscript, please be prepared to submit names and email addresses of up to 4 nominees.

    2. (hardcopy submission) Papers are accepted only in English. Authors should send two copies of the manuscript and all illustrations (originals and copies; note that four glossy prints are required for each electron micrograph) plus a computer diskette containing an exact copy of the manuscript with tables and figures in a separate file (TIFF, EPS or JPEG).  A letter accompanying the manuscript should contain names, fax numbers, postal and e-mail addresses of at least two potential reviewers. Information may also be given to avoid potential conflicts of interests. All material should be sent to:

    Physiologia Plantarum, Editorial Office
Department of Plant Physiology, Lund University
    Box 7007, S-220 07 Lund, Sweden
    Street address: 35B Sölvegatan

    3. Upon receipt, the manuscript will be given a 'received' date and sent for review.

    4. Six printed pages per paper are offered free of charge to members of societies affiliated to FESPP (Federation of European Societies of Plant Physiology).
Note: Non-members are charged an editorial fee (at present DKK 500) and then have the same privileges. Pages in excess of six must be paid for by the author (DKK 500 per page). It is therefore in the interest of the authors to concentrate their papers as much as possible. Verbose manuscripts will be returned with a request for condensation. For those submitting one or more (full page) electron micrographs, up to eight printed pages are offered free of charge.

    5. The entire manuscript must be typed double spaced (ca 6.0 mm between the lines) with the left margin at least 45 mm wide. All pages must be paginated.

    6. Italics or underlining should be used only for scientific names, genes and, where appropriate, other molecular biology terms.

    7 Footnotes should be avoided.

8 Units. The SI system, which includes the metric units, should be used throughout.

9 Arrangement of the manuscript and specific instructions: The first page (cover page) of the manuscript should include only the name and address, including fax and e-mail, of the author to whom all correspondence should be sent.
The second page should include initials and surname of all authors (for the Table of Contents).

The layout (third and subsequent pages) should include:
    Title
    Author(s) (full names)
    Address(es) of author(s)
    Abstract
    Abbreviations

    Introduction
    Materials and methods
    Results
    Discussion
    Acknowledgements
    References
    Tables
    Figure legends
    Figures

Consult recent issues for the correct layout.

9.1 Abstract, not exceeding 5% of the paper. Problem, methods employed and main results should be stated. The scientific name(s) and, where applicable, cultivar or variety of the plant(s) used should be stated in the abstract. EC numbers should be given for enzymes mentioned. Do not indent paragraphs.

9.2 Abbreviations (in alphabetical order). Necessary explanations of abbreviations used should have the form:
DPC, diphenylcarbazide; PQ, plastoquinone. Standard abbreviations (see following list) need not be defined in this section. Avoid complicated abbreviations of your own that make reading difficult. Abbreviations in the Introduction and following text should generally be written out in full with each abbreviated form in parenthesis the first time that it is mentioned.

9.3 Introduction. This should be concise, giving the reader a brief orientation of the subject in general, together with the reasons for the present study and its aims.
Text references should have the form: Andersson and Aro (1997) or Kaiser et al. (1999), if more than two authors. Text references should be cited chronologically (Inoue et al. 1995, Normanly 1997, Mutulu and Gal 1999).

9.4 Materials and methods. Give the full scientific name(s) of plant(s) used, as well as the cultivar (cv.) or variety (var.), where applicable. All growth conditions should be properly described. Include the trade name and manufacturer of all lamps used, as well as irradiance (W m-2) or fluence rate (mol m-2 s-1); lux alone is not accepted. The trade name(s) and suppliers of apparatus and chemicals used should also be given. EC numbers should be given for enzymes used.

9.5 Results. Make the text (written in the past tense) as objective and descriptive as possible. Indicate position of the figures and tables in the left hand margin for the printer. Refer to figures and tables as Fig./Figs. and Table/Tables.

9.6 Discussion should be concisely written with the main points of the work logically presented and with reference to the relevant tables, figures and literature.

    9.7 Acknowledgements.

9.8 References . List alphabetically according to the first author:
Fahn A (1979) Secretory Tissues in Plants. Academic Press, London, pp 24-50
Guan L, Scandalios JG (1998) Effects of the plant growth regulator abscisic acid and high osmoticum on the developmental expression of the maize catalase genes. Physiol Plant 104: 413-422

When more than one paper has the same first author, the references should be arranged in chronological order.

Unpublished material (except for accepted manuscripts in press) and personal communications should only be cited in the text, and not in the references. In the text, the initials and last names of all collaborators should be given where unpublished work is cited. Theses may not be cited in References unless they have been published include ISBN, or number in Dissertation Abstracts). Unpublished theses may be cited only in the text as follows: (R. Y. Smith 1979. Thesis, Univ. of California, Davis, CA, USA).

Proceedings, transactions and monographs, and books with different chapter authors:
Gilroy S, Trewavas A (1990) Signal sensing and signal transduction across the plasma membrane. In: Larsson C, Møller IM (eds) The Plant Plasma Membrane. Springer-Verlag, Berlin, pp 203-232

For further examples see recent issues of the journal. For journal abbreviations see also recent issues and BIOSIS list of serials.

9.9 Tables. Type each table on a separate sheet furnished with explanatory headings. Tables must be planned to fit a printed width of either 8 or 17 cm. Footnotes are not usually allowed.

9.10 Figures. High quality originals and 3 copies must be provided. Figures should be planned to appear with a maximum final width of either 8, 13 or 17 cm. Lettering must be provided by the author(s). Letters, numbers and symbols must appear clearly but not oversized. A suitable final size for lettering is 1-2 mm after reduction of the figure. One uniform size throughout is generally recommended. Avoid complicated symbols or patterns. Use open and closed circles, squares and triangles; open, striped and closed bars in histograms. Each figure should be boxed in and scale marks (turning inwards) provided. Lines should be clear, but not thick and heavy.
Each figure (originals) should be identified on the reverse with author's name, the figure number and indication of orientation. Copies of the figures for the referees should be numbered on the front.

    10. Publication in Physiologia Plantarum implies an obligation on the part of authors to deposit any novel nucleic acid sequence data referred to in their papers with the EMBL Data Library. Deposition of such data should, at the latest, be made immediately after the paper has been accepted for publication, so that the authors can add the relevant accession number from the Data Library at the end of the text at the page proof stage. Details of how to submit data to the EMBL Data Library can be found in Nucleic Acids Research, Vol. 18, issue 1.

    11. After editorial review and acceptance, the manuscript is sent to the printer. The authors receive two sets of the first proof with the manuscript. Changes against the manuscript at this stage will be billed at cost if they exceed 5% of the total.

    12. Offprints. The author will receive 50 reprints without cover free of charge. Further copies can be obtained at cost if ordered with the first proof.

    13. The attention of the editorial office should be drawn to significant errors that are discovered after publication, so that they may be included in a list of Errata.

    14. (hardcopy submission) Diskettes. Authors using a word processor should submit an IBM-compatible or Macintosh diskette of their text. Please indicate the type of computer and word processor used and ensure that the version on the diskette is identical to the paper version.
