The submission of a manuscript will be taken to imply that the material is original, and that no similar paper has been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. Manuscripts may be submitted in the form of original research reports (not research notes). Authors wishing to contribute review articles or preparing large papers should contact the editors before submitting the manuscript.

Corresponcence concerning reprints, the date of publication, proofs and/or merely technical information should be addressed to the publisher:
J. Cramer, in der Gebruder Borntraeger Verlagsbuchhandlung, Johannesstr. 3 A, D-70176 Stuttgart Germany
Manuscripts
must be written in English, French or German. Linguistic usage must be correct. The original and two copies must be sent to the appropriate editor. All parts of the contributions should be type-written, double-spaced, on one side of white bond paper with a 25 mm margin on all sides. Word processor-generated manuscripts must be of good quality and neither right-justified nor hyphenated. The laser writer fonts Times, Courier or Helvetica (12 point) are preferred. For questions regarding style, you may consult for example the "CBE Style Manual", 6th edition, 1994 (Council of Biology Editors, 11 S. LaSalle Street, Suite 1400, Chicago, Illinois 60603-1210, ISBN 0521-47154-0). All pages should be numbered serially. Please also look into the papers published recently in Nova Hedwigia.
The first page should only contain the title of the paper, the name(s) and address(es) of the author(s) and any necessary footnotes. The author to be contacted for correspondence/reprints is to be marked with an asterisk. The title should be informative and brief. If a name of an organism is used in the title, an indication of the taxonomic position must be given.
The second page should only have the abstract. The abstract must be in English language; an additional abstract in a language other than that of the article is desirable. The abstracts should not exceed one manuscript page and must be factual.
Structure of a paper
The text should normally be subdivided into six sections: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements and References. Underlining should be used only in the case of scientific names of species and genera, algebraic expressions and symbols. Abbreviations must be generally understandable and should be followed by a stop (does not apply to standardized measurements). Footnotes are accepted only exceptionally. Capitals should only be used where they are to appear as such. Symbols, units, and nomenclature should conform to international usage. Scientific names must be used in accordance with International Rules of Nomenclature. The first time a binomen is used in the text (not in the title and abstract) the name of its author should be included, unless a large number of names with authorities are grouped in a table. Authorities should be written consistently in full or abbreviated in accordance with BRUMMITT, R.K. & C.E. POWELL (eds.) (1992): Authors of plant names (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, ISBN 0-947643-44-3). The approximate position of illustrations and tables in the text should be indicated on the margin; legends and tables should follow the text on separate pages.
Tables
should be consecutively numbered in Arabic numerals and have a brief title. They must be neatly typed so that they can be reproduced directly.
Figures
must be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals. Line drawings must be made in Indian ink on good quality white or tracing paper. Lines must be sufficiently thick to reproduce well. Letters and numerals must be made with a lettering device. Line drawings should not be larger than the double final size. Computer-generated figures are not accepted unless laser printed or by a high quality ink-jet printer. The original drawings and a set of clear copies are must be submitted. Photographs must be of final size (maximum plate size: 12.7 x 19.0 cm). They should be made on glossy paper with good contrasts, mounted, numbered and ready for direct reproduction. Groups of photographs forming a single page should be squared accurately and mounted with a 1 mm narrow white gap between each print. Copies of photographic plates intended for referees must be of photographic or laser-copied quality (no photocopies). For identification the author's name, address, and title of the article must be written on the back of each illustration. Colour plates may be included at the author's expense.
Acknowledgements
should be simply phrased and given under a single heading at the end of the article.
Literature references
should be cited in the reference list as follows:
Journal article: PAPENFUSS, G.F., K.E. MSHIGENI & Y.-M. CHIANG (1982): Revision of the red algal genus Galaxaura with special reference to the species occurring in the Western Indian Ocean. - Bot. Mar. 25: 401-444.

Book chapter: MÄGDEFRAU, K. (1982): Life-forms of bryophytes. - In: SMITH, A.I.E. (ed.): Bryophyte ecology: 45-58. Chapman & Hall, London.
Names of journals should be abbreviated in accordance with "Botanico-Periodicum-Huntianum", 1968 (Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15213-3890, ISBN 0-913196-10-X, Supplementum, 1991, ISBN 0-913196-54-1).
In the text references are given: Bates (1982), Roy & Pal (1982) or, at the end of a sentence: (Bates 1982), (Roy & Pal 1982). For three or more authors, give the first author followed by "et al." and the year.
Page proofs
must be checked and returned within 10 days of receipt. Changes in proof, other than typographical errors, will be at the author's cost.
Reprints:
50 reprints per published article are provided free of charge. Additional copies may be ordered at cost price from the publisher. Reprint order forms are sent to the author together with the proofs.
