Instructions to Authors
Informacje dla autorów
Polish Journal of Neurology and Neurosurgery, a bimonthly, publishes papers related to broadly understood clinical neurology and neurosurgery. The journal is addressed to all those who are interested in the results of scientific research in neurological sciences in Poland. The journal is indexed in MEDLINE, Index Copernicus, EMBASE/Excerpta Medica Database, Chemical Abstracts CAS, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), OpenMed and Polish Medical Library (GBL). The journal publishes: original papers, short reports, review papers, case reports, letters to the Editor, notes on events and conference reports, book reviews.
Original papers are published exclusively in English. Original papers written in Polish are translated into English by the editors before publication. Other types of papers are published in Polish or in English. Please send in the title and outline of your planned review paper before preparing the final version; this will allow the Editorial Board to perform a preliminary assessment of whether the paper can be published.
Letters to the Editor may concern short scientific reports and comments or take the form of a polemic with theses presented in previously published papers.
All papers submitted for publication in the journal are assessed by two independent reviewers with the mutual anonymity rule as to the names of reviewers and authors observed.
The Editorial Board reserves the right to reject a paper without seeking reviewersopinion if in the opinion of the editorial staff the content or the form of the paper does not meet minimum acceptance criteria or if the subject of the paper is beyond the aims and scope of the journal.
Everyone listed as the author of a paper is liable for the reliability and completeness of data presented in the paper. If a paper has more than six authors, the contribution of each of them should be stated in the cover letter.
Do not submit papers that copy fully or partially previously published papers. Please send in photocopies or manuscripts of papers as to which such doubts may arise. If the Editorial Board is not notified in advance and the paper is found to have been copied during editorial work, the paper shall be rejected. Furthermore, relevant information will be published and subsequent papers by these authors will not be accepted for publication in the Polish Journal of Neurology and Neurosurgery during a period determined by the Editorial Board.
The layout of papers presenting results of clinical trials of pharmaceuticals and medical procedures should comply with the recommendations announced by the CONSORT Group (Moher D. et al. Ann Intern Med 2001; 134: 657-662). Authors are expected to elaborate on the sources of funding, the role of the sponsor in the planning and performance of trials, the analysis of results and the impact of the financing institution on paper content.
International names of pharmaceuticals must be used regardless of the topic of the paper.
Meta-analyses of observational studies in epidemiology must be prepared in accordance with the recommendations specified by the MOOSE group (Stroup D.F. et al. JAMA 2000; 283: 2008-2012). Recommendations issued by the QUOROM group should be followed in preparing meta-analyses of randomised trials (Moher D. et al. Lancet 1999; 354: 1896-1900). Guidelines for the reporting of studies of diagnostic accuracy are specified in the STARD checklist (Bossuyt P.M. et al. Clin Chem 2003; 49: 7-18).
We expect that all studies reported in the journal conform to the requirements of the Declaration of Helsinki (1989). Information on the consent of a relevant ethics committee to perform the trial and the informed consent of the patients to participate in the trial should be given in the Material and methods section of each paper in which diagnostic or therapeutic intervention does not follow from the standard procedure. Authors of case reports must not disclose personal data of patients described. In the case of photographs, a written consent of the patient concerned needs to be obtained to publish his/her image. After reading a paper and/or at the suggestion of the reviewer, the Editorial Board may request authors to provide the permission for conducting the study issued by a relevant ethics committee.
Manuscripts Manuscripts should be submitted in 12 pts. font, with double line spacing and ample margins of 2.5 cm. The text should not be formatted. Each section of the paper should begin on a new page.
The maximum length of original and review papers (including tables, figures, references and supplementary materials) is 24 pages (one standard manuscript page has 1800 characters). Case reports should not be longer than 12 pages, while letters to the Editor, reports and critical reviews should not exceed 3 pages. The preferred length for short reports is 8 pages and they may not include more than 2 figures or 2 tables, or 1 figure and 1 table, and maximum 10 references.
Title page should contain paper title, full names of authors, authorsplace of work, paper title in English, short title in Polish (to be used in headers on the journal’s pages), full name and address of the corresponding author (including fax number and/or e-mail address), given in that order.
Page two should contain an abstract in Polish. The length of the abstract should be at least 200 and not more than 250 words for original papers and not more than 150 words for review papers and case reports. Abstracts of original papers should be structured to include the aim, material and methods, results and conclusions. Below the abstract authors should supply between three and six keywords conforming to Medical Subject Headings (Index Medicus).
Page three should contain an abstract in English, structured just like the abstract in Polish, with three to six keywords in English supplied below.
Page four and subsequent pages of the original paper should contain the text arranged in the following order: 1) Introduction and aim of the paper: The introduction should be as concise as possible and introduce the context of the paper to the reader; the paper should clearly state the research hypothesis and the objective of the study. 2) Material and methods: Description of the studied population or material should be detailed and include all information necessary to assess the reliability of results obtained in the study and/or allow the experiment to be repeated by other researchers; the section related to statistical analysis should contain information on applied statistical tests and programmes. 3) Results: Present results directly related to the topic of the paper only; tables and/or figures are recommended. 4) Discussion. 5) Conclusions: These should be concise, follow directly from results presented above and correspond to the aim of the paper outlined in the introduction. 6) Acknowledgements and contributions: should include information on sources of funding (grant numbers); acknowledgements should concern those who made a significant contribution to the paper, but who did not meet the criteria to be listed as authors. The consent of the person to be named in the paper should be obtained. In this section authors should disclose any financial and other relations which if not disclosed could give rise to suspicions of a conflict of interests. 7) References: References should be listed in the order quoted in the paper. Please cite source and major papers that offer interested readers an opportunity to obtain more detailed information. Avoid citing review papers and conference reports, if they are not the only materials on a given topic. In the paper references should be given in square brackets with no space between the comma and the consecutive number, e.g. [3,4,8-10]. Authors are advised to carefully verify citation details. Give names of first three authors; if there are more authors, add “et al. Use Index Medicus abbreviations for journal titles.
The recommended style for references is as follows:
For articles in journals: Parkin D.M., Clayton D., Black R.J. et al. Childhood leukaemia in Europe after Chernobyl: 5 year follow-up. Br J Cancer 1996; 73: 1006-1012. For books: Philips S.J., Whisnant J.P. Hypertension and stroke. W: Laragh J.H., Brenner B.M. [ed.]. Hypertension: pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management. Ed. 2. Raven Press, New York 1995, pp. 465-478. For electronic sources: Morse S.S. Factors in the emergence of infectious diseases. Emerg. Infect. Dis. 8) Tables: Each table should be placed on a separate page. Tables should be numbered with Arabic numerals in the order in which they appear in the text. Authors should indicate the position of tables in the paper. Titles and headings of tables should be given in Polish and English. Information given in tables should not be repeated in the body of the text. Explanations concerning tables, e.g. full names of abbreviations should be given in footers below tables and should be consecutively marked: ***etc. 9) Figures: Figures and photographs should be numbered with Arabic numerals and attached as separate printouts (in the electronic version, as separate files). Figures should be saved in one of the following formats: .jpg, .bmp or .tif. Photographs sent electronically should be of the resolution of 300 dpi and in the .tif or .jpg format. Do not embed figures and photographs in MS Office files. The title and legend should be in Polish and in English. Figures and photographs are placed in the paper in the form delivered, so they must be prepared carefully. Please indicate where they should be placed in the text.
If a figure (photograph) has already been published elsewhere, state its source and obtain a written permission from the copyright holder for its reproduction.
Abbreviations should be always explained when used for the first time in the text (including the abstract). Abbreviations should not be used in paper titles, unless in exceptional circumstances.
Submissions should be accompanied by a cover letter including a declaration by the first author on behalf of the others to the effect that (1) the paper has not been published to date (except for abstracts of conference materials); (2) the paper has not been accepted for publication elsewhere and (3) all persons listed as the authors have read it and approved it for publication. Attach the consent of the head of the institution in which a given paper was prepared for its publication. Cover letters must be sent by ordinary mail to the address of the Editorial Board given below.
Original papers, short reports, review papers and case reports can only be sent to the Editorial Board by electronic mail, accessing the editorial panel (url will be delivered soon) and following further instructions listed there.
Other paper types, i.e. letters to the Editor, notes on events, conference reports and book reviews must be sent in two copies (including one copy saved on an electronic carrier) to the address given below:
