About the journal
Monthly Weather Review
Published monthly by the American Meteorological Society, Monthly Weather Review covers research related to analysis and prediction of observed and modeled circulations of the atmosphere, including technique development, data assimilation, model validation, and relevant case studies. This includes papers on numerical techniques and data assimilation techniques that apply to the atmosphere and/or ocean environment.
The links provide detailed information for readers, authors, reviewers, and those who wish to submit a manuscript for consideration.
The Monthly Weather Review prints five types of pieces. These are:
-
Articles - Full-length, up to 7500 words or 26 double-spaced pages of text (not including references, figure and table lists, and figures).
- Notes - Shorter articles, usually confined to a single subject. These are treated exactly the same as articles in the method of review and citation.
- Comments and Reply Exchanges - Comments are written in response to a published article. The author of the article being commented upon always has the opportunity to write a reply. These exchanges are published together.
- Pictures of the Month - A brief article or description, focussed on imagery of weather phenomenon of interest to the Meteorological community.
- Annual Weather Summaries - Extensive overviews of, for example, an entire season of hurricane acitivity. Summaries may be granted a higher word count, if needed, at the editor's discretion
Instructions to Authors
What you will need to submit:
NOTE: During the past year, the AMS has embarked upon a program to increase the efficiency of the editorial process, via electronic submission of manuscripts. Instructions for submitting your manuscript follow.
Please prepare the following in PDF format:
- A cover letter stating the manuscript title and listing the corresponding author. Also specify which published section you'd like your submission to be considered for - article, note, comment, picture of the month, or annual summary (see explanations on homepage), and whether the paper has been published or considered by any other journal in any language.
- * An Agreement to Transfer Copyright form. Although we must obtain your original copyright form containing all authors' signatures in ink, before publication, a PDF version is acceptable to begin the manuscript submission process. The AMS does accept the Crown Copyright form, if required by your institution.
- * A complete manuscript, preferably containing all sections of the manuscript in one file. This should be formatted as specified below.
* Alternately, if you cannot create PDF files of the cover letter and copyright form, you may fax these at the time of submission to: 303-497-8952
If you cannot prepare your manuscript in PDF format, please send the following by mail:
- A cover letter and copyright form, as described above.
- 5 paper copies of the manuscript, in the correct format.
Address:
MWR, Office of the Co-Chief Editors Attn: Editorial Assistant NCAR, FL-3, Rm. 3075 P.O. Box 3000 Boulder, CO 80307-3000
Manuscript Format
The manuscript should contain the following sections, in order:
- Title page - including date of submission or revision, and Corresponding Author's postal and email address
- Abstract - separate from Title page and Text. Abstracts are published in CD ROM format for search purposes and so they SHOULD NOT contain references pertaining to the paper
- Main text of the manuscript - divided by headings and sub-headings. The text portion (abstract through appendices) should not exceed 7500 WORDS (approximately 26 double-spaced, single-sided pages), using 12 point type or larger. Please do not embed your figures or tables in the text portion of your manuscript, thought you may note where they should appear. Double-spacing should be no tighter than 3 lines per inch/2.5 centimeters.
- Acknowledgements (if any)
- Appendices (if any)
- Reference list - arranged alphabetically and according to AMS guidelines.
- Table captions list (double-spaced)
- Tables, one-per-page with captions on each
- Figure captions list (double-spaced)
- Figures, one-per-page with captions on each
- All units of measurement must be listed in the System International (SI) style
Note: If you'd like to check your manuscript format against our evaluation form, click to see it.
Prior to final acceptance for publication, please send: 2 sets of figures (one of which must be press-quality) in the correct format, which is: one-per-page, with no captions or figure numbers on the front. Write figure numbers on the back, lightly, in pencil. Authors may choose to retain these originals until the manuscript has completed the review/revision process.
Although you are encouraged to provide electronic versions of your figures to the AMS after acceptance, it is not necessary to send them to the MWR Editorial Office, and we do still need the paper copies for the AMS publications staff.
Additional Materials (optional)
Electronic supplements In some cases it is useful to provide electronic supplements to an article to provide an animation, additional tabular information, or other supplemental materials. Such electronic supplements reside on the AMS servers and are linked to from the electronic version of the article. The possible inclusion of an electronic supplement should be part of the manuscript sent to the editor-in-chief, who will provide feedback to the author on the appropriateness of a supplement and guidelines on acceptable formats. The article must be able to stand on its own, but the supplement will undergo peer review.
Supporting Materials Authors may include copies of any unpublished papers and/or additional supporting documentation they feel would be helpful to the reviewers.
Electronic Figure Files - submitted directly to publisher after final acceptance: Authors may want to submit electronic versions of the figures, in addition to the 2 sets of paper copies, to provide for the highest quality of reproduction. These should be submitted directly to Allen Press (the AMS publisher), after acceptance and assignment of the AMS manuscript number by the AMS technical editor. Please contact your assigned AMS technical editor, listed on your acceptance letter, to inform them of your intent to submit these figures.
