Instructions to Authors

Microvascular Research (MVR) is an international journal dedicated to the dissemination of fundamental information related to the microvascular field.

Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts must be written in English and should be submitted in quadruplicate (one original and three photocopies), including four sets of good-quality figures, to:

Microvascular Research
Editorial Office
525 B Street, Suite 1900
San Diego, CA 92101-4495, USA
Tel:(619)6996424
Fax:(619)6996700
E-mail: mvr@elsevier.com

There are no submission fees or page charges. A letter outlining the basic findings of the paper and their significance should accompany each manuscript. To facilitate the publication of manuscripts, especially those papers based upon a new, theoretical concept, the Editors invite each contributor to submit the names of at least three scientists who could review the submitted manuscript.

Electronic Submission. Authors are requested to transmit the text and art of the manuscript in electronic form, via computer disk, e-mail, or FTP (ftp.elsevier.com, with username anon and password essd4acc), each time a new version is submitted. Submission as an e-mail attachment is acceptable provided that all files are included in a single archive the size of which does not exceed 2 megabytes (mvr@elsevier.com). Hard-copy printouts of the manuscript and art that exactly match the electronic file must be supplied. The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and authors must read the proofs carefully.

Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that no substantial portion of the study has been published or is under consideration for publication elsewhere and that its submission for publication has been approved by all the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out. Manuscripts that do not meet the general criteria or standards for publication in Microvascular Research will be immediately returned to the authors, without detailed review.

Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if the manuscript is accepted for publication, copyright in the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned exclusively to the Publisher. The Copyright Transfer Agreement, should be signed by the appropriate person.

Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions to reprint previously published figures, tables, and other material.

Types of Articles

In addition to regular articles, MVR publishes the following:

Brief Communications. Preliminary reports will be reviewed for prompt publication; however, the comments must be restricted to no more than six typewritten pages, including references, tables, and illustrations. No abstract should be included.

Technical Reports. Please contact the Editor-In-Chief before submission.

Letter to the Editor. Letters to the Editor may consist of either of two types of correspondence: (1) a question or challenge to an article published recently in the journal or (2) a brief communication describing a preliminary research report or a review. Letters to the Editor should be limited to no more than three double-spaced typewritten pages and a maximum of five references.

Preparation of Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout on one side of 8.5 x 11-inch or A4 white paper. Pages should be numbered consecutively and organized as follows:

The Title Page (p. 1) should contain the article title, authors' names and complete affiliations, footnotes to the title, and the address for manuscript correspondence (including e-mail address and telephone and fax numbers).

The Abstract (p. 2) must be a single paragraph that summarizes the main findings of the paper in less than 225 words. After the abstract a list of up to 10 keywords that will be useful for indexing or searching should be included.

The Introduction should be as concise as possible, without subheadings.

Materials and methods should be sufficiently detailed to enable the experiments to be reproduced.

Results and Discussion may be organized into subheadings.

Acknowledgments should be brief and should precede the references.

The References should be alphabetized by the first author's last name. References should be cited in the text by name and date. Cite papers with three or more authors using the first author's last name and "et al." Use the most rrecent edition of the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index for abbreviations of journal titles.

Only articles that have been published or are in press should be included in the references. Unpublished results or personal communications should be cited as such in the text.

Figures should be in a finished form suitable for publication. Number figures consecutively with Arabic numerals, and indicate the top and the authors on the back of each figure. Lettering on drawings should be professional quality or generated by high-resolution computer graphics and must be large enough to withstand appropriate reduction for publication. Please refer to http://authors.elsevier.com/ArtworkInstructions.html?dc=AI1 for detailed instructions on preparing electronic artwork.

Illustrations in color can be accepted only if the authors defray the cost.

Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Type each table double-spaced on a separate page with a short descriptive title typed directly above and with essential footnotes below. Authors should submit complex tables as camera-ready copy.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. To avoid delay in publication, only necessary changes should be made, and proofs should be returned promptly. Authors will be charged for alterations that exceed 10% of the total cost of composition.
