About the journal
In 1901 Gustavus Ohlinger, a student in the Law Department of the University of Michigan, approached the Dean with a proposal for a law journal. The faculty accepted the proposal, and the Michigan Law Review began publication in 1902, making it the sixth oldest legal journal in the country. The Review originally was intended as a forum in which the faculty of the Law Department could publish its legal scholarship. The faculty resolution creating the Review required every faculty member to submit two articles per year to the new journal.
From its inception until 1940, the Review's student members worked under the direction of faculty members who served as Editor-in-Chief -- the first was Floyd Mechem, the last Paul Kauper. In 1940, the first student Editor-in-Chief was selected. During the years that followed, student editors were given increasing responsibility and autonomy; today, the Review is run with no faculty supervision. Seven of each volume's eight issues ordinarily are composed of two major parts: Articles by legal scholars and practitioners and Notes written by the student editors. One issue in each volume is devoted to book reviews. Occasionally special issues are devoted to symposia or colloquia.

General Submission Policy |
|
The Law Review is currently welcoming and reviewing articles/essays for acceptance in Volume 105. The Review also welcomes book reviews and proposals for book reviews for possible inclusion in the Annual Survey of Books. Please review our article-length policy before submitting your manuscript.
We gladly consider unsolicited manuscripts for publication. We do not, however, accept submissions from law students working towards their J.D.
The Law Review strongly prefers to receive submissions of article manuscripts through our website. Please click here to submit a manuscript for consideration. Alternatively, submissions may be mailed in hard copy. Please do not submit your article by mail if you have also submitted the article through our website.
Citations in manuscripts should appear in footnotes, not endnotes, and follow The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (18th ed. 2005). The style of citations and text should conform to The Chicago Manual of Style (15th ed. 2003).
Commentary on recent books is included only in our book review issue.
For questions regarding submissions, please email mlr.articles@umich.edu or call (734) 647-4074.

Book Reviews |
|
The Michigan Law Review publishes an Annual Survey of Books dedicated to book reviews. Book reviews are not included in any other issue of the Michigan Law Review. The Survey includes reviews of books published in the current year and the past two years. So, for example, the 2007 Survey, which will be published in May 2007, will include reviews of books published in 2007, 2006, and 2005.
The Book Review office welcomes unsolicited submissions. Manuscripts or proposals should be emailed as an attachment to michlrev.ed.br@umich.edu. Suggested guidelines for the format of proposals may be downloaded here. For reviews of books published during the previous calendar year, we favor submissions of review manuscripts. Decisions for the upcoming year's issue are generally made between March and May. Please note that we would like finished drafts to be no more than 8,500 words, including footnotes. We believe that this is the ideal length for an interesting and useful book review. It will also assist us in making our survey of the many fascinating and important books related to the law that have been published in the past few years as comprehensive as possible.
To request an expedited decision or to contact the book review editors, please email michlrev.ed.br@umich.edu or call (734) 647-4072. |
