About the journal

Journal of Peace Research has for 40 years provided scholarship of the highest standard, addressing the causes of violence, methods of conflict resolution and ways of sustaining peace. Articles frequently develop policy recommendations from their findings. Journal of Peace Research has set a high standard for empirical rigour, theoretical imagination and methodological sophistication.

"Journal of Peace Research not only publishes critical, cutting-edge research on peace, war, and violence. It has also taken extraordinary steps to lead the establishment of scientific standards for data replication policies in the field, resulting even in a published agreement with other journals to follow emerging best practices. Across a range of interdisciplinary areas, JPR seems to be as widely followed as it is closely read." - Gary King, Harvard University, USA

"I often find myself turning to Journal of Peace Research as the premier journal for innovative articles on peace and security. JPR does not shy away from publishing articles that may vary from the mainstream, such as studies focused on gender and conflict among others. The Editor and his staff consistently provide professional and comprehensive editorial reviews regardless of whether the manuscript has been accepted for publication. These editorial comments invariably provide important direction for revision. Kudos to JPR for its high standards, willingness to think outside the box, and thoughtful editorial feedback!" - Mary Caprioli, University of Minnesota, Duluth, USA

"Journal of Peace Research is an essential resource to students of international conflict research. Drawing on a long-standing Scandinavian tradition of peace studies, this versatile periodical defines an important area of study better than any other publication. JPR is committed to the highest scholarly standards regardless of methodological orientation. Together with a very small number of European journals, it has made significant inroads into the American academic market, which is otherwise notoriously hard to enter." - Lars-Erik Cederman, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zürich

"I have watched Journal of Peace Research evolve for over 35 years and, unlike some of its competitors, it can rightly claim to have improved with age. One of its perhaps most ironic assets - in view of its name - is that it is the international relations journal with the fewest ideological / paradigmatic / epistemological blinders in the business. Long may it prosper." - William R. Thompson, Indiana University, USA

"International institutions see in war increasingly a main source of underdevelopment and injustice. Reliable information on why armed conflicts occur and where the main trouble spots will be in the future is thus of utmost importance to policymakers. Journal of Peace Research is the foremost academic outlet in the social sciences that takes this public responsibility seriously. It regularly presents the newest comparative analyses of wars. A particular service is the exemplary replication policy that renders the research process transparent and subjugates the findings to the critical scrutiny of the scientific community. JPR has recently published landmark articles on the liberal peace, international conflict management, the environmental sources of conflict, and the correlates of civil war. It will continue to be indispensable for peace researchers around the globe." - Gerald Schneider, University of Konstanz, Germany

"For several years JPR has published a creative mix of theoretical, empirical, and policy articles on peace and conflict research. I scan each new issue more carefully than any other journal I receive" - Ted Robert Gurr, University of Maryland and Former President, International Studies Association

"JPR is a very important forum on scholarship related to peace, war and other violence between groups. The articles cover a wide range of topics, including international relations, conflict, security, the impact of different political systems, and the nature and creation of national and international institutions. The journal is interdisciplinary and international in its contributors. Its section on 'book notes' with brief reviews of many books is extremely valuable" - Ervin Staub, University of Massachusetts, USA

"Journal of Peace Research has established itself as one of the major forums for the ongoing debates about peace and security. It is proud of its positivist tradition, but also open to other approaches" - Barry Buzan, London School of Economics, UK

Instructions to Authors

JPR is committed to theoretical rigour, methodological sophistication, and policy orientation. Articles that score high on all of these three criteria stand the best chance of being accepted. You may find it useful to ask yourself: What original contribution to peace can my article make? Most articles published in JPR are submitted without prior contact between author and editor. We always acknowledge receipt. Some articles are dealt with by the editor immediately, but most are read by several outside referees. Editorial evaluation is normally completed within three months.

Articles may be submitted by email attachment (jpr@prio.no), preferably in MS Word for Windows or pdf format. The title page and biographical statement(s) should be in separate files, but the other text elements can be combined. Submissions may also be sent by post if electronic submission proves problematic. In such cases, one hard copy of the manuscript and a diskette/CD should be sent to The Editor, Journal of Peace Research, Hausmanns gate 7, NO-0186 OSLO, Norway. The author should retain a complete copy for proofreading or as a basis for preparing a revised version. Submitted manuscripts should contain: (1) a short, but informative title; (2) name(s) and affiliation(s) of the author(s); (3) a 200-300 word abstract; (4) the main text; (5) tables and figures, if any, each on a separate page; (6) notes, if any; (7) list of references; and (8) a short biographical statement. These items should appear in the manuscript in this order. Please include a word count on the title page.

The title page and biographical statement will be removed before the article is sent to the referees. It is the author's responsibility to remove first-person references and other clues elsewhere in the article that may reveal the author's identity. The referees' comments will generally be anonymous when sent to the author (i.e. unless the referee makes it clear that he or she wishes to be identified).

We do not accept double submissions. The editorial evaluation process is so time-consuming that we cannot set it in motion until we are sure that a manuscript is seriously intended for JPR. We will occasionally accept articles which are extracts from or summaries of books published at about the same time, and articles which have appeared in other languages. However, these are borderline cases, and authors should call our attention to such situations when they occur.

When preparing the final version of the article, an author will be expected to conform closely to the journal's style requirements (as detailed in the expanded version of this document, available upon request).

Within reasonable limits we will referee articles which do not conform to these style requirements. Absolute technical requirements in the first round are: legible copy, numbered pages, double spacing (or 1.5) throughout, an abstract, an alphabetical reference list, and a word count on the front page.

Regular articles are generally restricted to a maximum of 10,000 words, including all elements (abstract, notes, references, tables, etc.). We are reluctant to burden our referees with very long manuscripts. Authors who suspect that their articles will have to be cut anyway should make the required deletions before submitting.

We encourage gender-neutral and international language wherever possible. Please try to avoid unintentionally 'nationalistic' language such as the use of 'us' for your own nation or group of nations and 'them' for others. The readers' knowledge of English can be taken for granted but not necessarily familiarity with institutions in English-speaking countries. For the same reason, use acronyms and abbreviations sparingly. Whenever in doubt, explain the acronym or abbreviation the first time it occurs.

A final pdf of the article and a copy of the issue will be supplied to the author.

The author is responsible for obtaining permission to reprint illustrations, tables, etc., from copyrighted publications.

JPR encourages replication of empirical articles. In order to facilitate this, we require authors to make their data available to others at the same time as their article is published. Datasets are posted on our website, and the authors may post them as well.

Prior to publication, authors are required to assign copyright to Journal of Peace Research. However, they retain their right to reuse the material in other publications written or edited by themselves and due to be published at least one year after initial publication in JPR.
