About the journal

The Journal of Modern African Studies offers a quarterly survey of developments in modern African politics and society. Its main emphasis is on current issues in African politics, economies, societies and international relations. It is intended not only for students and academic specialists, but also for general readers and practitioners with a concern for modern Africa, living and working both inside and outside the continent. Editorial policy avoids commitment to any political viewpoint or ideology, but aims at a fair examination of controversial issues in order to promote a deeper understanding of what is happening in Africa today. The journal also includes an invaluable book review section.

The Journal of Modern African Studies

Instructions to Authors

The Journal offers a quarterly survey of politics, economics, and related topics in contemporary Africa.
The main emphasis is upon the peoples and policies, the problems and progress of this dynamic and disparate continent; upon the many societies that are evolving rather than the essential characteristics of the old; upon the present, not on the more distant past. The best current work is presented from specialists in different academic disciplines whose contributions can illuminate and cross-fertilise one another.

Editorial policy avoids commitment to any political viewpoint or ideology. The Journal seeks to promote a deeper understanding of what is happening in Africa today.

Contributions are invited from all over the world, and especially from scholars working in African universities. Articles written in languages other than English will be considered on their merits, and where necessary translation will be arranged. The average length suggested is 5,000 to 7,000 words, with occasional exceptions of up to 10,000 words.

A more detailed set of instructions regarding manuscript preparation is available from the editor and will soon be appearing on this page.

Submission of an article is taken to imply that it has not previously been published, and has not been submitted for publication elsewhere. If an author is publishing a related article elsewhere, this fact should be stated. Authors of articles published in the journal assign copyright to Cambridge University Press (with certain rights reserved) and you will receive a copyright assignment form for signature on acceptance of your paper.

Contributors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce any material in which they do not own copyright, to be used in both print and electronic media, and for ensuring that the appropriate acknowledgements are included in their manuscript.

Proofs
First proofs may be read and corrected by contributors provided that they can give the editor an address through which they can be reached without delay and can guarantee to return the corrected proofs to the editors, by airmail where appropriate, within seven days of receiving them. Typographical or factual errors only may be changed at proof stage. The publisher reserves the right to charge authors for correction of non-typographical errors.

Authors of articles and review articles (but not book reviews) will receive a pdf file of their contribution upon publication.
