About the journal

The Journal of Mathematical Psychology includes articles, monographs and reviews, notes and commentaries, and book reviews in all areas of mathematical psychology. Empirical and theoretical contributions are equally welcome.
Areas of special interest include, but are not limited to, fundamental measurement and psychological process models, such as those based upon neural network or information processing concepts. A partial listing of substantive areas covered include sensation and perception, psychophysics, learning and memory, problem solving, judgment and decision-making, and motivation.
The Journal of Mathematical Psychology is affiliated with the Society for Mathematical Psychology.
Research Areas include:
• Models for sensation and perception, learning, memory and thinking • Fundamental measurement and scaling • Decision making • Neural modeling and networks • Psychophysics and signal detection • Neuropsychological theories • Psycholinguistics • Motivational dynamics • Animal behavior • Psychometric theory
Instructions to Authors
Submission of Manuscript. Manuscripts must be written in English and should be submitted in quadruplicate (one original and three photocopies), including four sets of good-quality figures, to:
Journal of Mathematical Psychology Editorial Office 525 B Street, Suite 1900 San Diego, CA 92101-4495, USA Tel: (619) 699-6393 Fax: (619) 699-6700 E-mail: jmp@elsevier.com
There are no submission fees or page charges. Each manuscript should be accompanied by a letter outlining the basic findings of the paper and their significance.
Research articles, monographs, and reviews will be reviewed by an appropriate member of the Board of Editors who will select at least two additional referees to assist him or her. Ordinarily, a note or comment will be reviewed by at least one referee although the Editor may act on these unilaterally. Referees have the option of remaining anonymous to authors. Board members will correspond directly with the authors of manuscripts that require revision prior to acceptance. Rejected manuscripts and final acceptance of manuscripts, however, will be handled by the Editor, Dr. Richard Schweickert. An article will not be considered in press until the author receives a letter so stating for the Editor. Book reviews will be solicited and handled by Dr. Richard A. Chechile.
Electronic Submission. Authors are requested to transmit the text and art of the manuscript in electronic form, via either computer disk, e-mail, or FTP (ftp.elsevier.com with username anon and password essd4acc) each time a new version is submitted. Submission as an e-mail attachment is acceptable provided that all files are included in a single archive the size of which does not exceed 2 megabytes (jmp@elsevier.com). Manuscripts prepared using TeX or LaTeX are welcome; however, LaTeX(2e) is strongly preferred. The Elsevier LaTeX package (including detailded instructions for LaTeX preparation) is available at http://www.elsevier.com/locate/latex. Note that the use of specialized versions of TeX or extensive use of custom macros may necessitate conventional typesetting from the hard-copy manuscript. Hard-copy print outs of the manuscript and art that exactly match the electronic file must be supplied. The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and authors must read the proofs carefully.
Original papers only will be considered. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that no substantial portion of the study has been published or is under consideration for publication elsewhere and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out; further, that any person cited as a source of personal communications has approved such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editor's discretion. Manuscripts that do not meet the general criteria or standards for publication in Journal of Mathematical Psychology will be immediately returned to the authors without detailed review. Articles and any other material published in the Journal of Mathematical Psychology represent the opinions of the author(s) and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editor(s) and the Publisher.
Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if the manuscript is accepted for publication, copyright in the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned exclusively to the Publisher. The Copyright Transfer Agreement should be signed by the appropriate person(s).
Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions to reprint previously published figures, tables, and other material. Letters of permission should accompany the final submission.
Preparation of Manuscript. Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout on one side of 8.5 x 11-inch or A4 white paper. Authors are requested to follow the instructions given the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th edition. Certain modifications are listed below. Pages should be numbered consecutively and organized as follows:
The Title Page(p. 1) should contain the article title, authors' names and complete affiliations, footnotes to the title, and the address for manuscript correspondence (including e-mail address and telephone and fax numbers).
The Abstract (p. 2) must be a single paragraph that summarizes the main findings of the paper in less than 150 words. After the abstract a list of up to 10 keywords that will be useful for indexing or searching should be included.
References should be cited in the text by author's surname and the year of publication, e.g., Roe (1990); Roe et al. (1991); Roe and Jones (1993, p. 150) (for references to a specific page). If a reference has more than two authors, the citation includes the surnames of all authors at the first mention, but later citations of the same reference include only the surname of the first author and the abbreviation "et al." Suffixes a, b, etc., should be used following the date to distinguish two or more works by the same author(s) in the same year, e.g., (Roe, 1990a, 1990b). Literature citations in the bibliography should be arranged alphabetically according to the surname of the author. Journal titles should be written out in full rather than abbreviated. Only articles that have been published or are in press should be included in the references. Unpublished results or personal communications should be cited as such in the text.

Figures should be in finished form suitable for publication. Number figures consecutively with Arabic numerals, and indicate the top and the authors on the back of each figure. Lettering on drawings should be of professional quality or generated by high-resolution computer graphics and must be large enough to withstand appropriate reduction for publication. Color Figures Illustrations in color may be accepted only if the author defrays the cost.
Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Type each table double-spaced on a separate page with a short descriptive title typed directly above and with essential footnotes below. Authors should submit complex tables as camera-ready copy.
Equations should be numbered consecutively with the number placed in parentheses to the right of the equation. Limit numbering only to those equations that are in the main stream of the mathematical development. Refer to equations as Eq. (3) or simply (3). Equations should be punctuated to conform to their place in the syntax of the sentence.
Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. To avoid delay in publication, only necessary changes should be made, and proofs should be returned promptly. Authors will be charged for alterations that exceed 10% of the total cost of composition.
Reprints Twenty-five (25) reprints will be provided to the corresponding author free of charge. Additional reprints may be ordered.
