About the journal

The Journal of Histochemistry and Cytochemistry, the official Journal of the Histochemical Society, publishes papers that report the development of new histochemical and cytochemical methods, significant modifications of existing techniques, or original research in which histochemical and cytochemical methods make a significant contribution. Histochemistry and cytochemistry include (but are not limited to) biochemical, biophysical, and molecular analyses of the functional or structural components of tissues or cells in which the data have been obtained primarily by microscopy. Manuscripts are invited from all fields of biology, pathology, cellular and molecular biology. Highest priority is given to papers that use state-of-the-art histochemical and cytochemical methods to obtain significant new biochemical information about cell function and gene expression in normal, genetically altered, and pathological states. Articles that describe new histochemical and cytochemical methods are of interest, particularly when they are shown to provide crucial new data of current interest to the fields of cell and developmental biology or pathology. Manuscripts receive prompt attention under the supervision of the Journal's Editors, who are distinguished scientists with broad expertise in diverse areas of histochemistry and cytochemistry.

    Manuscript Format

    Specifications

Print all pages with full double-spacing, 3.8 cm margins, and left-justification. Use a standard 12 point typeface (Times New Roman, Times, Arial) throughout the manuscript. Do not use boldface, underlining, or italics anywhere in the manuscript. Footnotes and Appendicies are not permitted. Number each page at the bottom. The order of section should be as follows:

Page 1. Running headline: all capitals, no more than 48 characters and spaces.

Page 2. Title page: Complete title; first name, middle initial, last name of each author; where work was done (use authors' initials in parentheses if necessary); mailing address, phone, FAX, and e-mail of the author designated for correspondence and reprint requests (if different from the first author).

Page 3. Abstract: not more than 200 words, followed by 3 to 10 key words.

Beginning on page 4: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, Literature Cited, Tables, Figure Legends. Begin each section on a new page. Individual sections, including tables and figure legends, must all be contained in the same single document file. Do not send separate files for any section of the manuscript.
    Variations for Brief Reports:
    • Follow details for pages 1-3 as described above except the Abstract should be limited to 100 words.
    • Page 4 - start the body of the manuscript. It should not be divided into subsections. The body of the manuscript should be followed by these sections, each starting on a new page: Acknowledgments, Literature Cited, Tables, Figure Legends.
    • Citations must be limited to 12.
    • Brief Reports are limited to 4 Journal pages in publication. In order to meet this limit, the entire manuscript must not exceed 18,000 characters and spaces in total, including the characters and spaces taken up by figures and tables. To calculate the characters and spaces used by a figure or a table, take the following into account: approximately 130 characters and spaces fit into an 8.2 cm (1 column) wide, 1 cm high area; approximately 260 characters and spaces fit into a 17.1 cm (2 column) wide, 1 cm high area. Figures up to 10 cm wide must be treated as 8.2 cm wide for the purposes of calculating the length of the article, and they will be reduced to 8.2 cm wide at production. Figures over 10 cm (2 column) wide must be treated as 17.1 cm wide for the purposes of calculating the length of the article.

    Manuscript File

A 3.5" floppy disk containing the manuscript file (including any tables) and a separate file for the letter of transmittal must accompany each submission. The manuscript file should be in Microsoft Word compatible format. We can accommodate other software, but staying in Word will give the best results. Follow these specifications when submitting the manuscript file:
    • Do not attempt to produce a typeset look, or use any special formatting, as this will be lost if your file is sent for use in production, and it may interfere with the production process.
    • Using the 'Insert Symbol' function in Word (and in other word processors) often creates undesirable results for inserting special characters. For Greek symbols such as mu and alpha, please use the Symbol font, which is available as a standard font with most word processors.
    • Use the word processor's superscript or subscript functions; do not attempt to achieve this effect by varying point size or positioning.
    • Do not use special fonts, and do not use formatting such as bolding, underlining, or italics. Use only Times, Times New Roman, or Arial. All other fonts will be converted upon receipt of the manuscript document file.
    Materials and Methods

Give the manufacturer’s name and location (city and state for US, city and country for outside the US) in parentheses for reagents and instruments. Indicate the sources for all antibodies and nucleotide sequences. Any new antibodies must be characterized by biochemical methods such as Western blots. Controls for all histochemical methods must be reported. For studies that employ animals, indicate whether institutional or National Research Council guidelines were followed. If human subjects were used, indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975 or if they were approved by an institutional committee on human experimentation. Quantitative results must be presented as graphs or tables and supported by appropriate experimental design and statistical tests. Group data should be reported as means and standard errors, with statistical p-values and sample sizes.

    Literature Cited

Reference only work published or in press, and give the name of the journal. Cite unpublished work as such in the text. Personal communications should be acknowledged in the text, and be accompanied by written permission. Abbreviations should conform to PubMed format. In the text, cite references by name and year, with earlier references listed first, and references with the same year listed alphabetically; eg. Lillie (1966), (Spicer et al. 1965; Graham and Karnovsky 1966). In Literature Cited, list references according to the Harvard Style (Name and Year). Order references alphabetically by first author, and include all co-authors. When references have the same list of authors, order them chronologically, beginning with the earliest date of publication. When the same author has more than one publication in a year, use lower case letters (eg. 1989a, 1989b, etc.). Do not use periods after authors?initials, abbreviated journal titles, or at the end of the citation. Use inclusive page numbers. Examples:

    Abbreviations and style

Customary abbreviations in wide use need not be defined in text (e.g., DNA, ATP). Define other abbreviations the first time that they are used. Refer to the Journal of Biological Chemistry for recommended abbreviations for biological compounds, Chemical Abstracts for names of chemical compounds, Biological Stains (RD Lillie, HJ Conn, 1977, 9th ed Williams & Wilkins) for nomenclature, and the CBE Style Manual (1994, 6th ed, Chicago, Council of Biology Editors) for scientific abbreviations. Use SI units only.

    Tables

Number consecutively (Arabic numerals). Include a brief title above the table. Print each table double spaced, without lines, and on a separate sheet. Do not submit photographs or image files of tables. Use footnotes (superscripted lower-case letters) to explain abbreviations, statistics, etc.

    Figure Legends

Number figures in a single consecutive series with Arabic numerals. Do not duplicate material in text or describe methods. Indicate scale bar size if it is not indicated on the figure.

    Illustrations

  • General Guidelines
  • Sizes
  • Micrographs
  • Line Art
  • Digital Images
  • Color Figures

      General Guidelines
Submit one production quality set of figures and one complete set of figure image files with the manuscript. Figures must be submitted for review as they are intended for publication with regards to color, sizing, and layout. Figures intended for color publication must be submitted in color, and figures intended for black and white or grayscale publication must be submitted in black and white or grayscale. Composite figures which contain multiple panels must be arranged and submitted as intended for production, both in print and in digital format. The printed set of figures must be a publication-quality set (press set) of continuous-tone images printed on photographic-quality paper. Label the back of each figure or composite plate in soft lead pencil, indicating the TOP, figure number, and first author’s name. Figures must be trimmed and mounted on a backing no larger than 21.6 cm x 27.9 cm (8.5 in. x 11 in.). Arrange composite photographs so that there is a uniform 2-5 mm space between adjacent figures in a plate.

      Sizes
The maximum size available on a published page for a figure is 17.1 cm wide by 22.2 cm high. Images must be sized to fit within this area. For the best results, size illustrations at precisely 8.3 cm (1 column) wide, 11.7 cm (1?column) wide, or 17.1 cm (2 column) wide. Any images outside these size ranges will be reduced accordingly.

      Micrographs
Figure numbers should be applied to lower left corner of each panel. Figure labeling should be 5-7 mm high and 1-2 mm in line thickness. Micrographs should have a scale bar, with the size indicated if it is not in the figure legend. Label composite figures with upper case lettering (e.g., A, B). Color prints must be mounted on firm but flexible smooth-surfaced paper no larger than 21.6 cm x 27.9 cm (8.5 in. x 11 in.). Do not mount color prints on stiff cardboard.

      Line Art
Line drawings or graphs should be no larger than 12.7 cm x 17.8 cm. They will be reduced to 8.3 cm wide when possible. Files of these should be submitted in EPS format with a resolution of at least 1000 dots per inch.

      Digital Images
      1. Digital images must be submitted on either Zip Disk or CDROM (CD-R or CD-RW). Please note that we cannot use other types of disk such as Jaz disks or Magneto-Optical (MO) discs.
      2. Supplying digital image files is not a substitute for the press set of figures. Authors are still required to supply a high quality hard copy of the figure set.
      3. Restrict the fonts used in labeling and line art figures to Times, Times New Roman, and Arial. Other fonts will not reproduce properly.
      4. Figures with images (eg. micrographs or gels) that have labeling inside or on the image should be submitted at 300 dots per inch in TIFF format. Lineart (eg. graphs) or images with labeling outside or around the image must be submitted at 1000 dots per inch resolution in TIFF or EPS (encapsulated postscript) format. If figures have been laid out in any of the following programs, it may be better to submit the files in their native format rather than produce an EPS or TIFF file: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PageMaker, Canvas. We can also use PDFs of figures, if the PDFs are produced at the highest possible resolution. Programs not listed here are generally not supported. Authors are encouraged to email the Journal Office (johc@u.washington.edu) and ask questions regarding figure formats.
      5. Digital figures must be labeled and arranged in composites as intended for publication, and must match the hard copy press set that accompanies the manuscript.
      6. Failure to send in digital images that follow these guidelines can result in significant delays in the review and publication processes.

In the event there is any discrepancy between the hard copy of the manuscript or figures and the digital files supplied, the hard copy will be taken as the definitive version.

A copy of this form should accompany the digital images, with the top half filled out to indicate the Figure number, the type of file format (TIFF or EPS), the program used in making the file, the version of the program used, the computer system (Mac or PC), the color type (grayscale, black and white, or CMYK), how the fonts were supplied (for vector graphics/lineart), and the resolution in DPI. This form must be printed and filled out, and submitted with the manuscript. The bottom half is for Editorial Office use only and should not be filled in by the author. The Vol/Issue and MS# are for Editorial Office use as well.
      Form for Digital Images

      Color Figures -- Free Color!
The first production page of color figures is free, and each additional page is $200. This cost must be paid before an article is scheduled for publication. Authors are encouraged to consolidate color figures in as few pages as possible. Color figures presented separately will be processed as color figures on separate pages, and authors will be billed accordingly. Figures intended for black and white production must not be submitted in color. Images that are submitted in color will be presumed for color production and authors will be billed accordingly. Images intended for grayscale or black and white production must be submitted in grayscale or black and white.

    Manuscripts Requiring Revision

Manuscripts are reviewed under the supervision of the Editors of the Journal of Histochemistry and Cytochemistry. Revised manuscripts should be returned with adherence to the following guidelines:

    1. A Letter of Transmittal containing a point by point response to the reviewers?and editors?comments must be returned with the manuscript. This letter and point by point must be supplied on disk with the manuscript itself as described above for initial submissions.

    2. A Word 2000 compatible file of the manuscript, supplied as described above for initial submissions, must be sent on a 3.5" diskette.

    3. All figures must be supplied as digital images on either Zip Disk or CD as TIFF or EPS files, as described for initial submissions. These files must be the final format intended for publication and should have all sizing and labeling completed. A photo-quality press set of figures must be supplied as well, and must follow the guidelines for initial figure submissions. Figures requiring alterations will incur an additional cost.

    4. If the manuscript title has changed, a new assignment of copyright signed by all the authors must be submitted with the revised manuscript. If a new assignment of copyright is not submitted the manuscript cannot be published in the case of acceptance. Any new authors that are added in the second version of the manuscript must submit an assignment of copyright.
Revised Manuscripts that are not returned to the Journal within 60 days are considered new submissions and are subject to review again at the Editors?discretion. They will be re-accessioned with a new number, and all prior material from the previous submission will be considered in any Editorial decisions to be made. Failure to comply with these guidelines will delay the processing of the manuscript. Authors are encouraged to email or call the Editorial Office with any questions regarding revising their manuscripts.

    Manuscript Processing Fee

A fee of $150 is assessed for manuscripts that are accepted for publication (the Journal does not assess page charges) to partially offset publishing expenses. This fee is payable along with reprint charges. Free reprints are not provided.
