About the journal
|
The Journal of Engineering Mathematics promotes the application of mathematics to physical problems particularly in the general area of engineering science. It also emphasizes the intrinsic unity, through mathematics, of the fundamental problems of applied and engineering science. The journal publishes in the following areas: Mathematics: Ordinary and partial differential equations, Integral equations, Asymptotics, Variational and functional-analytical methods, Numerical analysis, Computational methods. Applied Fields: Continuum mechanics, Stability theory, Wave propagation, Diffusion, Heat and mass transfer, Free-boundary problems; Fluid mechanics: Aero- and hydrodynamics, Boundary Layers, Shock waves, Fluid machinery, Convection, Combustion, Acoustics, Multiphase flows, Transition and turbulence, Creeping flow, Rheology, Porous-media flows, Ocean engineering; Atmospheric engineering; Solid mechanics: Elasticity, Classical mechanics, Nonlinear mechanics, Vibrations, Plates and shells, Fracture mechanics, Biomedical engineering, Geophysical engineering, Reaction-diffusion problems; and related areas.

Instructions to Authors
Aims and Scope
The aim of this journal is to promote the application of mathematics to physical problems, in particular in the general area of engineering science. It also aims to emphasize the intrinsic unity, through mathematics, of the fundamental problems of applied and engineering science. The scope of the journal includes the following:
Mathematics
Ordinary and partial differential equations, Integral equations, Asymptotics, Variational and funtional-analytic methods, Numerical analysis, Computational methods.
Applied fields
Continuum mechanics, Stability theory, Wave propagation, Diffusion, Heat and mass transfer, Free-boundary problems; Fluid mechanics: Aero- and hydrodynamics, Boundary layers, Shock waves, Fluid machinery, Convection, Combustion, Acoustics, Multi-phase flows, Transition and turbulence, Creeping flow, Rheology, Porous-media flows, Ocean engineering, Atmospheric engineering, Non-Newtonian flows, Ship hydrodynamics; Solid mechanics: Elasticity, Classical mechanics, Nonlinear mechanics, Vibrations, Plates and shells, Fracture mechanics; Biomedical engineering, Geophysical engineering, Reaction-diffusion problems; and related areas.
Editorial Policy
Manuscripts
Original research papers, dealing with subjects within the journal‘s scope, are solicited from scientists all over the world. Occasionally, and by invitation only, survey or review papers will be considered. Special issues, each devoted to a particular theme, are planned. The ideal length of a research paper is between ten and twenty journal pages. Longer papers will be considered, but their quality should justify the excess length. Extremely short papers are best sent to journals specialising in the publication of short notes and letters.
Refereeing
Each paper is looked at by two expert referees. In the event of a dispute, or if the Editor-in- Chief feels that the advice of the referees is inconclusive, a third referee will be consulted. As it seeks to ensure a high quality of the referee reports, the journal does not favour quick refereeing. Initially, referees are allowed up to two months to return their reports; the time gained by pressurizing referees into sending off a quick report is marginal.
Author‘s right of rebuttal
Authors who strongly object to what the referees write about their work have the right to say so, and will be listened to. Their objections will be passed on to the referees. If the matter remains unresolved, a third and possibly a fourth referee will be consulted. The Editor-in-Chief may decide at any stage whether the author‘s case is worth pursuing. Authors should realise that the journal upholds certain standards of acceptability that may be different from theirs.
Submission of Manuscript
Journal of Engineering Mathematics prefers the submission of papers in LaTeX; however, papers submitted in AMSTeX, LAMSTeX. For the purpose of refereeing, papers for publication should be initially submitted in hard copy (threefold) to: Kluwer Academic Publishers Editorial Office Journal of Engineering Mathematics P.O. Box 990 3300 AA Dordrecht The Netherlands
The eventual supply of accepted-for-publication papers in their final form on MS-DOS or Apple Macintosh diskettes in LaTeX, together with a hard copy version (in case anything needs to be checked), will ensure more rapid publication.
A LaTeX style file can be obtained from the Publisher: http://www.wkap.nl/authors/jrnlstylefiles/
