|
Journal of Endocrinology provides a wide coverage of research in all aspects of endocrinology. It is in the top ranks of global endocrine journals and publishes high quality, leading edge research from all over the world. The readership of the journal is worldwide, with 40% of readers in North America. Most issues contain a review article or commentary on a topical subject. These have been well received and are highly cited. There is also a fast track rapid communications system which means that exceptional papers can be published in as little as six weeks from receipt. |

Instructions to Authors
The scope of the journal
All aspects of the nature and functions of the endocrine system.
Types of papers
Original research papers, rapid communications, short reviews and commentaries are considered.
Submission of manuscripts
Journal of Endocrinology encourages authors to submit online using the ESPERE system. Online submission and peer review can help to achieve more rapid publication than the paper-based system.
If you still wish to submit as hard copy, please send your manuscripts to:
The Editor-in-Chief, Professor Steve Hillier, Journal of Endocrinology, 22 Apex Court, Woodlands, Bradley Stoke, Bristol BS32 4JT, UK (Tel: +44 (0)1454 642220; Fax: +44 (0)1454 642201).
The United States Editor, Dr Douglas M Stocco, Journal of Endocrinology, Department of Cell Biology and Biochemistry, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Lubbock, TX 79430, USA (Tel: +1 806 743 2505; Fax: +1 806 743 2990; E-mail: doug.stocco@ttmc.ttuhsc.edu).
There is no charge for submitting papers nor will there be any subsequent page charges.
Online submission
See our online submission guidelines. Please prepare the content of your article as described below.
General instructions
Six copies of the manuscript and six sets of halftone figures are required. Only one set of line drawings needs to be of publishable quality; the others may be photocopies.
When submitting a paper for consideration, authors must give written assurance that the work has not been, and will not be, submitted for publication elsewhere until the journal has reached a decision on whether to publish the paper. If rejected the authors are free to submit elsewhere; if accepted the assurance automatically extends indefinitely. It will be assumed that submitted manuscripts carry the approval of all the authors.
Authors are required to acknowledge all of the major sources of funding relevant to the research reported and to declare that there is either: (a) no conflict of interest that would prejudice its impartiality; or (b) a potential conflict of interest that is fully declared within the text of the article. Please include this before the reference list (and after the Acknowledgements section, where present) in a section entitled 'Funding'.
Manuscripts must be in English and spelling should follow The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary or Merriam-Webster¡¯s Collegiate Dictionary. All abbreviations must be defined. Manuscripts should be printed double-spaced, preferably in a Times font, and with a size of at least 10 point. Please number each line of text.
To expedite refereeing the author should provide duplicate copies of papers quoted as ¡®In Press¡¯, particularly those concerned with methodology.
To facilitate the rapid processing of their paper authors should also provide a fax number and an email address.
Use of computer disks/email
Copies of documents on computer disk/email should not be supplied when submitting manuscripts. However, a word processor file for your paper will be requested if the manuscript is accepted for publication or you are asked to revise your manuscript.
Please provide files via email to , or on PC-formatted disks if possible (this option is also available on many Macintosh systems). The preferred word-processing format is RTF, but files produced using other packages can be translated. Please provide printed copies of all files when supplying electronic versions.
The disk/email should carry the text, references, figure legends and tables. Diagrams and photographs should be supplied as separate hard copy (and electronic files if possible).
Original research papers
Title page
This should contain the complete title (please limit this to a maximum of 20 words), names of all authors, full addresses of all institutions (the address of the laboratory where the work was carried out should be given first) a short title for page headings and a minimum of four key words.
Abstract
The abstract (which should be no more than 5% of the length of the paper) should summarize the main findings of the paper and the conclusions reached.
Text
The text should generally follow the format: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion.
References
In the text, references should be cited by giving the name of the first author et al. where there are more than two authors. In the reference list a maximum of ten should be given and the titles of the papers and the journals should be written in full. Examples of reference style are as follows:
Kenyon CJ, Fraser R, Birnie GG, Connell JMC & Lever AF 1986 Dose-related in vitro effects of ranitidine and cimetidine on basal and ACTH-stimulated steroidogenesis. Gut 27 1143-1146.
Harvey SS 1975 Hypnotics and sedatives. The barbiturates. In The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, edn 5, pp 102-123. Eds LS Goodman & A Gilman. New York: Macmillan Publishing Co.
Please note that papers with incorrectly formatted references will be returned and the acceptance date changed to the date of receipt of the correctly formatted paper.
Tables
Tables should have full and informative headings and should be supplied electronically and as hard copy on separate pages. Table columns should be set up using simple tabs rather than specialised table layouts.
Figures
General information
Three-dimensional graphs to show two-dimensional data should be avoided and photo- and electronmicrographs should contain scale bars. The cost of colour reproduction over and above that for black and white will be charged to authors, but will be kept to a minimum. Please avoid grey or dotted backgrounds in all figures, as these do not always reproduce well. Legends should enable the reader to understand the information contained in figures without reference to the text.
Paper copies
These should be provided even when electronic copies are also supplied and should be numbered and on separate pages, bearing the first author¡¯s name. One set of line drawings should be good quality originals, e.g. from a laser printer (not photocopies). There is no need to photograph originals of line drawings.
Electronic copies
Line drawings e.g. graphs, should be saved/exported to EPS by the software used to create them. If unable to save/export to EPS, then save the file as a TIFF using a high output resolution (see below). Scanned images or those from a digital capture device should be saved/exported to a TIFF file: colour images should be saved in CMYK format; mono images should be saved in grayscale format. The resolution of both colour and mono imges should be roughly 300 dpi. Line drawing scans should be saved in bitmap format at roughly 1000 dpi.
Use of statistical analysis
To enable the reader to judge the validity of results, the number of experimental subjects used (n), and the extent of independent experimental repetition from which data are taken, should be stated. Authors should, where possible, support their conclusions with appropriate statistical analysis. The tests used must be described concisely in Material and Methods, and the results presented clearly. The term ¡®significant¡¯ should not be used without supporting evidence from statistical analysis and the P value used to determine significance must be stated.
Rapid communications
Rapid communications should be submitted in the usual format for initial consideration. If accepted these papers may be typeset traditionally (time allowing), so the text and figures should be supplied on disk or by email as separate RTF and TIF/EPS files respectively.
However they may be printed directly from the original typescript, so authors should also provide the manuscript as a laser-printed document, in two columns (except for the title and authors) within a maximum text area of 166 mm ?215 mm (6.5" ?8.5"). Figures and tables should be positioned within the text of the paper. The rapid communication should not exceed six pages when arranged as described above (i.e. approximately 4000 words) and a pdf file of this version should also be included.
The following rules concern the submission of rapid communications.
- The observations must be novel and of immediate relevance.
- Methods must be so described as to permit repetition; results must be adequate to justify claims.
- Communications must be accompanied by a separate brief statement setting out the author¡¯s reasons for requesting rapid rather than regular publication.
- The Editor-in-Chief or Associate Editor will assign the communication to two referees, one of whom may be a member of the Editorial Board.
- The date of acceptance assigned to the paper will be that on which the final version suitable for inclusion in the journal is received.
- In all instances the decision of the Editor-in-Chief will be final.
- In general the author guidelines for original research papers apply.
Reviews and Commentaries
Short reviews will be considered and subjected to the usual refereeing process. There are no special requirements for the organization of review material, but papers should in general conform with the requirements for original research papers.
Commentaries on topical subjects are welcome. They should be no more than four printed pages long (2500 words) and will be refereed.
Both reviews and commentaries must include abstracts.
Ethics of experimental procedures on human subjects
Manuscripts must contain a statement that consent has been obtained from each patient or subject after full explanation of the purpose and nature of all procedures used. It must be stated that the investigation was approved by the local ethical committee, functioning according to the 3rd edition of the Guidelines on the Practice of Ethical Committees in Medical Research issued by the Royal College of Physicians of London (11 St Andrew's Place, London NW1 4LE, UK; Tel: +44 (0) 207 935 1174; Fax: +44 (0) 207 7486 4514; Email: publications@rcplondon.ac.uk; Web: www.rcplondon.ac.uk). Copies of the MRC recommendations can be obtained from the Medical Research Council, 20 Park Crescent, London W1B 1AL, UK (Tel: +44 (0) 20 7636 5422; Fax: +44 (0) 20 7636 6179) or at www.mrc.ac.uk
