Instructions to Authors
The Journal of Electrocardiology is devoted exclusively to clinical and experimental studies of the electrical activities of the heart. It seeks to contribute significantly to the accuracy of diagnosis and prognosis and the effective treatment, prevention, or delay of heart disease. The editorial contents include electrocardiography, vectorcardiography, arrhythmias, membrane action potential, cardiac pacing, monitoring defibrillation, instrumentation, drug effects, and computer applications.
Submission of a paper to the Journal implies that it reports unpublished work and is not being submitted to another journal. Accepted manuscripts become the sole property of the Journal and may not be published elsewhere without the consent of the publisher. Upon acceptance of an article, all authors will be asked to sign a form that transfers copyright ownership to the publisher, and the paper will not be processed for publication until the signed form has been returned. Manuscripts and editorial communications should be sent to: Journal of Electrocardiology P.O. Box 90186 Long Beach, CA 90809-0186 Telephone: (562) 933-2609 Fax: (562) 933-2611
Manuscripts should be submitted on a disk, preferably in Microsoft Word. A double-spaced hard copy version of the final manuscript, free of handwritten alterations, must accompany the disk. All components of the manuscript must appear within a single electronic file: references, figure legends, and tables must appear at the end of the manuscript. Please refrain from using end notes as references or automatic list numbering because these features are lost in conversion: simply type the reference number in parentheses in the text and type the reference list. Formatting, such as Greek letters, italics, super- and subscripts, may be used: the coding scheme for such elements must be consistent throughout. The title page should list the title, the authors' names, degrees, and institutional affiliations, a short title of 40 characters or less (to be used as a running head), and the name, address, and telephone and fax numbers of the author who will be responsible for reviewing page proof and for reprint requests. Acknowledgments of financial support also should be listed on the title page.
The manuscript should begin with an abstract, no more than 150 words long, that summarizes the problem presented, studies undertaken, results, and conclusions. The abstract should be followed by up to six key words, to be used in indexing. The text should follow standard scientific format: introduction, materials and methods, results, and discussion.
References should be cited in numerical order in the text and should be typed as superscripts. A reference list should be typed as a separate section at the end of the article. Authors are responsible for verifying the accuracy and completeness of references. Journal titles should be abbreviated as in Index Medicus. Follow the examples shown below for style and completeness.

Illustrations, to be submitted in duplicate, should be supplied as black-and-white glossy prints and should not be mounted or trimmed. Line drawings and lettering should be professionally rendered. Line art should be submitted with no gradations of shading as they will not reproduce well. Use cross-hatching or patterns where shading is necessary. The figure number, author's name, and orientation should be marked on the back of each figure. Color illustrations will be printed only if they convey information not clear in black and white, and then only if the author agrees to pay the extra costs incurred in printing in color. The illustrations should be cited in numerical order in the text. Legends should be typed on a separate sheet, should be as brief as possible, and should explain any abbreviations used in the illustration.
Tables should be typed on separate sheets and should be intelligible without reference to the text. Footnotes may be used to explain abbreviations. The tables should be cited in numerical order in the text.
Electronic Manuscript Submission Authors will soon be required to submit manuscripts on disk. Instructions for submission of manuscript on disk are printed periodically in the Journal. For more information, call the editorial office.
Permission must be obtained from the publisher and/or author for the use of any nonoriginal material. A copy of the written permission should be submitted with the manuscript.
Part of the financial support of the Journal is derived from payment by authors of publication charges.
