About the journal

The Journal of Differential Equations is concerned with the theory and the application of differential equations. The articles published are addressed not only to mathematicians but also to those engineers, physicists, and other scientists for whom differential equations are valuable research tools.
Research Areas Include:
Mathematical control theory Ordinary differential equations Partial differential equations Stochastic differential equations Topological dynamics Related topics
Instructions to Authors
Statement of Purpose
To be accepted for publication, a paper should be a significant piece of mathematics of interest to a broad section of the differential equations community, and be a true advance.
Acceptable papers may set forth original research or distinguished exposition in mathematics and its applications. They should be complete, clearly written and contain significant contributions to important problems. In general notes will not be published unless they relate to papers previously published in the journal.
Original papers only will be considered. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been and will not be nor is currently submitted elsewhere, and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out; further, that any person cited as a source of personal communications has approved such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editor's discretion. Articles and any other material published in the Journal of Differential Equations represent the opinions of the author(s) and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editor(s) or the Publisher.
Copyright and Permissions
Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if the manuscript is accepted for publication, copyright in the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned exclusively to the Publisher.
Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions to reprint previously published figures, tables, and other material.
Electronic Transmission
Authors are requested to transmit the text and art of the manuscript in electronic form, via either computer disk or FTP, after all revisions have been incorporated and the manuscript has been accepted for publication. Hard-copy printouts of the manuscript and art that exactly match the electronic file must be supplied. The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and the proofs must be read carefully by the author.
Preparation of Manuscripts
Authors are strongly encouraged to use the LaTeX template available at http://www.authors.elsevier.com/latex for manuscript preparation. If the article is written using Elsevier Science's document class 'elsart', or alternatively the standard document class 'article', proofs will be produced without rekeying the text. The Elsevier LaTeX package (which includes detailed instructions for LaTeX preparation) consists of the files elsart.cls (use this file if you are using LaTeX2e, the current version of LaTeX), elsart.sty and elsart13.sty (use these two files if you are using LaTeX3.09, the previous version of LaTeX), guidelines for users of elsart, a template file for quick start, and the instruction booklet "Preparing articles with LaTeX." Otherwise, please follow the hard-copy manuscript preparation guidelines below.
Manuscripts should be prepared according to the following style rules. Deviation from these rules causes publication delays.
Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate, and should be double-spaced throughout on one side of 8.5 x 11-inch (21.3 x 27.5-cm) or A4 white paper. Number all pages consecutively and organize the paper as follows.
Title page (page 1). This page should contain the article title, authors' names and complete affiliations, footnotes to the title, and the address for manuscript correspondence (including e-mail address and telephone and fax number).
Abstract (page 2). The abstract must be a single paragraph that summarizes the main findings of the paper in less than 150 words. After the abstract a list of up to 10 keywords that will be useful for indexing or searching should be included.
Footnotes. In text, footnotes should be avoided. If absolutely necessary, identify them by superscript Arabic numerals in order of their appearance and type them together on a separate page, double-spaced.
Tables. Number tables consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Type each table double-spaced on a separate page with a short descriptive title directly above and essential footnotes below. Authors should submit complex tables as camera-ready copy.
Figures. Figures should be in a finished form suitable for publication. Number figures with Arabic numerals, and indicate the top and the authors on the back of each figure. Lettering on drawings should be professional quality or generated by high-resolution computer graphics and must be large enough to withstand appropriate reduction for publication. Figures should not be embedded in the text. Digital artwork of at least 300 dpi resolution is accepted in EPS or TIFF formats. Please refer to http://authors.elsevier.com/ArtworkInstructions.html?dc=AI1 for detailed instructions on preparing electronic artwork. Type all legends consecutively on a separate sheet. Color art is permissible, but the extra printing costs will be charged to the author.
Equations. All equations should be typewritten and the numbers for displayed equations should be placed in parentheses at the right margin. References to equations should use the form "Eq. (3)" or simply "(3)."
References to the literature should be cited by number in parentheses in the text as listed in numerical order at the end.

For unpublished lectures or symposia, include the title of the paper, name of the sponsoring society in full, and the date. For journal names, follow "Abbreviations of Names of Serials, Reviewed in Mathematical Reviews" (Mathematical Reviews Annual Index, American Mathematical Society). When in doubt about employing certain abbreviations, use clarity as a guide. Cite references in text by Arabic numerals between brackets as [1], [1,2], [1 Theorem 1.5].
Proofs
Article proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. Authors will be charged for alterations in excess of 10% of the total cost of composition. Submitting your illustrations, pictures, tables and other artwork in an electronic format helps us to produce your work to the best possible standards, ensuring accuracy, clarity and a high level of detail. This site shows how to prepare your artwork for electronic submission and includes information on common problems, suggestions on how to ensure the best results can be gained plus image creation guides for popular applications. See the links under Application Guidelines for details about using specific artwork software for Windows and Macintosh platforms.
