About the journal

Journal of Comparative Pathology on ScienceDirect(Opens new window)

The Journal of Comparative Pathology is an International, English language, peer-reviewed journal which publishes full length articles, short papers and review articles of high scientific quality on all aspects of the pathology of the diseases of domesticated and other vertebrate animals.

Articles on human diseases are also included if they present features of special interest when viewed against the general background of vertebrate pathology.

Instructions to Authors
The Journal exists to publish articles recording research and original scientific findings and topical reviews relevant to the diseases of domesticated and other vertebrate animals. Articles on diseases of man are also appropriate if the present features of special interest when viewed against the general background of vertebrate pathology. The Editorial Board accepts papers on the understanding that they have not been published elsewhere and, if accepted, will not be reprinted in whole or in part without the Board's written approval. The Board reserves the right to reject any manuscript submitted to it.

Articles must be concise and unnecessary duplication of data in text, tables and graphs should be avoided. Allusions to published work must be brief and limited to what is necessary to evaluate the findings in the manuscript. Extensive reviews of the literature will not be accepted.

Papers for publication should be sent to: Dr G. R. Smith, Department of Pathology and Infectious Diseases, The Royal Veterinary College, Royal College Street, London, NW1 0TU or to any member of the Editorial Board.

Number of Copies
Manuscripts should be typed with generous margins and double spacing throughout. Two clearly typed copies, one of which should be the top copy, and two sets of illustrations should be submitted. Papers will be published with the minimum of delay, bearing the dates of receipt and acceptance.

Title
Papers should normally comprise: 1. A Summary of the findings presented in the paper and the conclusions drawn from them. 2. A brief Introduction stating the purpose of the paper. 3. A concise account of the Materials and Methods used. 4. A record of the Results. 5. A Discussion of the significance of the results. 6. Any necessary Acknowledgments for assistance. 7. References to published work cited in the text, in alphabetical order.

Reference Format
The form of references should be: Name, Initials (Date), Title, Periodical or other source in full. Volume number, First and last page numbers, e.g. Komuro, T. (1969). The fine structure of crayfish muscle. Journal of Electron Microscopy, 18, 291-297. In the text, references to publications by three or more authors are given in the style Jones et al. on each occasion.

Titles of books must be given in full with Publisher, place of publication and edition if other than first, e.g. Ebashi, S., and Endo, M. (1968). Calcium ion and muscle contraction. In Progress in Biophysics. J. A. V. Butler and N. Noble, Eds, Pergamon Press, New York.

Figures
All illustrative materials must be of high quality. Diagrams and charts should be drawn in indian ink on Bristol-board, smooth surfaced white cartridge paper, or blue, feint-lined graph paper. Their proportions should be related to those of the printed page and they should be about twice as large as their intended final size. All symbols, figures and lettering should be written lightly in pencil on a transparent overlay.

Photomicrographs and photographs should be submitted as sets of separate glossy prints. Text figures and half tones will be inserted in the text at an appropriate place, which authors might like to indicate on their manuscript. Authors may wish to have several half tones grouped into a composite plate. In this case the author should submit a sketch plan of the suggested layout and not mount or number the photographs as this work will be undertaken by the Publisher. Such composite blocks should be of the same proportion as the page of the Journal. All figures must be numbered lightly in pencil on the back, and where the author wishes to draw attention to particular features by means of arrows or lettering, these should not be superimposed directly on the photographs but their positions should be clearly indicated by drawing them on a piece of tracing paper laid over the surface of the photographs. Although no charge will be made for a reasonable number of text figures or black and white half tones the Publisher reserves the right to require authors to contribute towards the cost of plates. If an author believes that the presentation of his results would be enhanced by the use of colour, an extimate of the cost will be provided on request. The maximum page area available for blocks is 23 x 16.9 cm. Figures designed to span one or both columns on a page should be 8.2 cm or 16.9 cm wide, respectively. Legends to all illustrations should be shown separately and, where appropriate, should state the stain and the magnification. The latter should preferably be given in the form of a magnification bar.

Tables
Tables require captions and should be self explanatory. They should be submitted on separate sheets and designed to fit into the type area of one printed page or less. Extensive tabular matter may not need to be published but can be consulted by interested parties if a footnote indicates where it is available.

Units & Abbreviations
Before submitting manuscripts authors are recommended to consult previous issues of the Journal to see the form in which the article appear. Systeme Internationale (S.I.) units should be used where appropriate including data on chemical pathology.

Case Reports
The Journal will contain a separate section of short papers. This section is intended to include reports of small completed investigations, new techniques or case descriptions. They may not always require the subdivisions of a full length paper but should include a brief summary and essential references. They must not exceed four printed pages, including tables and figures, and should be clearly marked 'Short Paper'. Single Case Reports will only be accepted if they make a significant contribution to knowledge.

From time to time the Journal publishes by invitation Review Articles on topics of broad interest from authors with acknowledged expertise in their field. Only in exceptional circumstances will unsolicited Review Articles be considered.
